View Full Version : REUTERS:Sony Sees 10-Year Life for PlayStation 2 Console
RobertoOrtiz 03-26-2004, 12:28 PM Quote:
"Sony Corp. believes that its market-leading PlayStation 2 video game console can continue to sell until 2010, twice as long as most in the industry had assumed was possible, an executive of Sony's U.S. video game unit said on Thursday.
In a keynote address at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, California, Andrew House, executive vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, said the success of the original PlayStation, nearing its 10th anniversary, had convinced the company that two-thirds of its potential PS2 sales were yet to come.
The PlayStation 2 was released in 2000 in the United States and game industry observers have expected Sony and rival Microsoft Corp to shift their marketing efforts to next-generation game machines in 2005 or 2006.
"There are some huge potential gains for us later in the life cycle," House told a packed auditorium.
But with the lengthening of the sales window for PS2, he said, Sony and the industry will also have to consider the advancing age of the people who own and buy the hardware.
"We have to think very carefully about the type of audience we're reaching with our games," he said.
House also sought to quash speculation that Sony might accelerate development on its next console, the PS3, to keep up with Microsoft Corp., which many in the industry have speculated is preparing the successor to its Xbox console for 2005.
"Competitive movement will not be a factor in determining our launch release plans," he said. "

As myself and my roommates buy more impressive hardware(5-disc DVD changer, damn nice audio system, etc...) the PS2 is being used less and less, but the other day someone was using it to play Chrono Trigger. As long as the thing's still working, it has two consoles worth of games(several more if you count ports from other systems), and considering that it's the least powerful current console and can STILL make some games on the others look dated(Silent Hill 4 looks absolutely stunning), I'd say it'll be around at LEAST 'til 2006, and even after that I doubt people will be quick to replace it, as people are STILL playing PSX games on it today.
Plus it'll be a while before people get used to the X-Box and Gamecube enough to take full advantage of their power like some people can the PS2.
I like it when you don't start hearing about how certain games are going to be held off for the consoles sucessor just months after launch. =P
*hugs his PS2*
Got it first thing in the morning launch day and it still runs like new.

Having just *recently* purchased an xbox, I really hope that both sony and microsoft push back the release dates of their new concoles so I don't feel like i've wasted my money (theres also rumours that the xbox 2 wont be able to play xbox 1 games).
EDIT: Spankspeople: silent hill 4 will also be released on xbox. SH2 was released on the xbox and they had great sales but SH3 wasnt released on xbox and its sales werent as good as its prequel, so they decided to release the 4th one on xbox, thankfully :buttrock:

True, it is being released on the X-Box, but a game that looks that nice on the X-Box is somewhat expected. The fact that it looks just as good on the PS2(which it was designed for initially, since it's still using(a modified version of) the same engine as 3, and I believe 2) is extremely impressive.

Well XBox will not go for 10 years, because the average lifespan for the freaking hardware until it turns to foobar is 2 to 3 years, mine just died a couple of months ago after 2.5 years, and my friends just died about the same time and his is under 2 years.
Cheers,

The lifespan of the X-Box can be greatly increased by using it in a well ventilated area. The thing overheats like mad, so it's better to just leave it on the floor rather than finding a tight spot to cram it into on your home entertainment system conceiler.

While X-box is a brand name .....it uses hardware that is built as cheaply as human possible ...no getting around that ...so it is a wondor it lasts even 2 years

i bet playstation 3 will come out in 3-5 yrs, there is No way sony is letting the ps2 cash cow go. they will milk it until it's just old hat and people expect more out of a console system. Graphically it's running 1997 PC quality games.
There is no comparison with xbox and ps2 graphically. PS2's resolution is very small, maybe 320, i'm not sure. the way the ps2 does make games look good is by just using it's blurry resolution. It's the visual equivilen to running a pc game in software mode. sure it seems to run just as well since you can't really see the image that well to begin with.
However it's amazing how they've managed to squeeze so much out of the ps2.

well the original playstation has been around for almost 10 years.....It shipped in 1995 if I remember correctly. I'm not really surprised by the fact that they plan to keep PS2 technology around for so long.

Besides the incredible amount of games I will continue to play the PS2 because I am strangely in love with the controller. I find it to be the most comfertable one in the market today.

We all know the ps2 has an amazing learning curve, and that developers were slow to utilize all its power. Does anyone know how much of the ps2's potential they have tapped as of now?
this game coming out looks like ps2 has some ways to go

i'm never getting rid of any of my systems anymore. PS2 still has silent hill, mgs, jak, ratchet and clank, gran tursimo, gta, and EA [maybe not all exclusives] but damn. those are all triple A titles and even if half suck, its still worth holding onto a PS2.
plus with the PSP and the best controller ever designed, it still has some time before it dies.
look at the Dreamcast. people still play that and i've even seen the unreleased Half Life on it. with all the mods out there, people will hold onto old systems so they can watch .avi movies and play emulators on them. i wish my DC didn't die on me so i could play some Rush2049 [the best damn racer]...

ACTUALLY....I dont know how realistic this 10 year deal is with the ps2.
I think we all forgot *including myself* that all TV's, at least in the USA, are going to be digital by 2005(?). Maybe sony will release an HDTV adapter for the PS2? Otherwise watching analog video on a digital TV will be pretty ugly :hmm:

This is a very missleading thing for Sony to say. IIRC, they are still releasing some games for PS1 hardware. So, while I'm sure the sales of the hardware will continue for years as the price continues to drop, i don't think the PS3 is 5 years away. Plus they will probably do a PSOne type thing to the PS2 at some point, just to keep selling the same tech longer.
