Hi, I am working on this building at the moment. I just wanted a little more FG to bring out the detail and maybe look a bit dirty. I think I have tried just about every setting in brazil to create a good FG effect but to no avail. There is a little in this image but not enough.

Well I have just tried to upload my image but it won't allow it?

whats up with that? it says 20000 byes max my image was 17k and still was'nt good enough. Could someone help me out here, I am a noob to cgtalk after all

i assume you want some more contrast in the lighting here, so the cracks are darker, etc. so you could either increase the directionality of the light, ie it needs to come from a direction such that it doesn't shine down into the nooks and crannies. you could toss some cards in there to block some light here and ther to do this. you could use a map in your skylight to change how light is being distributed perhaps.

OR

you could just do it in post. render out a white plaster pass (in render pass control, material override) with your same lighting and in the compositing package of your choice, use that white lighting pass as a multiply layer to your rendering, which should knock the darks down darker and leave the light spots where they are.

as far as an in-brazil solution, you could perhaps try messing with the exposure controls to see if you can make an easy fix there, but the problem here sounds like it is just a situation where the light is a bit too flat. you could also toss in a few area lights to get more contrast etc :)

Hi Capn_Panic,

The render pass controls in Rio are a little difficult to understand for a novice like me but you obviously have a pretty good grasp of them.

Are you by any chance thinking of adding a tutorial for the render pass controls in your brazil tutorials?

mohinder: no immediate plans, although it is not out of the question. the render pass stuff currently in brazil is really a temporary solution as i understand it, and will most likely be either removed or replaced with something different in brazil 2.0

if you have specific questions about how to get a certain type of pass, feel free to ask, as that will get you answers much faster then wating for me to get around to making a tut ;)
