Maya 4's startup screen is notoriously ugly.

So, after reading about how to change it at the 3dbuzz.com forum, I decided to give it a shot.

The procedure was originally posted by pyromania in this thread:
http://sv2.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1803&highlight=startup%2Bscreen

"ok I found out how to do it. first you need resource hacker
available here

http://www.rpi.net.au/~ajohnson/resourcehacker

this program allows you to edit win32 Dlls and executables.

Once you have that go to your C:\AW\Maya4.0\bin directory and make a backup of MayaRes.dll just incase something breaks. Open up MayaRes.dll in ResHacker and you will get a bunch of folders on the left hand side. Open up the "Bitmap" folder and scroll down to a folder called MAYASTARTUPIMAGE.XPM open this folder and click the green icon inside, this it the startup screen bitmap. From here you can right click on the green wheel icon and either save the bitmap and edit it or replace it complety. I'd try and keep the new image the same resolution otherwise strange stuff might happen. Once you have the image you want you can right click on the green icon and to to "Replace Resource" and add you new image. Save the new MayaRes.dll and your done."

Disclaimer: only ONE of these images are my own--the Princess one(the first image), and it's not even 3D--it's a painting done with Painter and Photoshop. The rest are all just images from artists that I respect and admire, and most of them were NOT created with Maya.

I did these just so I could have something pretty to look at when I boot up Maya, and I thought I'd share them. If for ANY reason, the original artists or the admins come across this and have problems with it, just say the word and I'll make them disappear.

It doesn't make any difference to me that most of the images weren't made with Maya(in fact, maybe none of them were). This is not meant as any disrespect to any artist or any company. Like I said, just pretty pictures to look at when Maya boots up.

These are in the highest quality JPEG format, but I think you might need to convert them to BMP's for them to work(I'm not sure though).

i did that resource hack thing and changed the image , but maya freaked out and started crashing , giving weird errors right after i did that. Do it at your own risk.

Whoa. That's weird. It worked fine for me. Definitely back up your dll before doing it.

Just in case you guys want to know who made what image, and used what software, here is the nitty gritty.

First image- Me. It's a painting, not 3D. But for 3D , I use Maya.

second- A Japanese guy named Masayuki. I think he used Shade Pro. But I know he also uses Lightwave too.

third- A Japanese guy that goes by the name Brown Sugar. I'm pretty sure he uses Lightwave. But I could be wrong. It might have been Maya.

fourth- Yamamoto Naoki. I think he uses Shade Pro.

fifth- An image from Sacnoth's game, Koudelka. I think those guys either use Softimage or Maya.

sixth- An image from Sega's game Shenmue. I'm pretty sure they used Softimage.

seventh- No idea. I forgot. I do remember it was made in Max though.

eighth- Den Beauvais. Animation Master.

just found this thread (and yah, maya's splash screen is pretty oogly :annoyed: ).
the link posted to the resource hacker site didnt work, so I dug around and found what I assume is the new site for it:

Hope this helps. I intend to "fix" maya's splash screen this evening.

update: ok.. that is the resource hacker, the process works,
here's the replacement i used (good ol' Hyung-Tae Kim War of Genesis art, use some of his magna carta stuff for my modified 3DSmax splash screen)
