How to make an objects self-illuminated and emitting photons? I tried using a lamp behind the objects, but it took ages and looked rubbish.
So is it possible to make an material (shader?) to emit photons? Or will I have to try again on the light-inside-object?

(grumble grumble radiosity worked much better grumble grumble)

What rendering engine are you using?

I'm using Mental Ray.

Take a look in the Mental-Ray Shader-Discussion in the resource board, there must be a SSS-shader which does such things you're looking for very well.

Hope that helps, but nearly everything related to MR can be found in this thread.

imexp self illum objects in MR can only be achieved using Fgather
so no photons i'm afraid

i did some tests myself, and had a hard time to get shadow casting from self illumin objects,... the self illumination was piece of cake however...

i'll check it out again to be sure, it has been a while...

Hmmm... no photons :S bugger.

I hope your tests show some clarity on this thing... and of course I'll check out that MR-shader-disscusion thread out.

ok did a quick test again :
if i use only photons, Mray says 'no light sources present'
so i think it's save to say : self illum works only with Fgather
think about it : photons are from a light source
selfillumin objects aren't lights... as simple as that

i tried it again and all works as it should, shadows and all...
donnow why it didn't work a while back?

here's the test :

hope this is of any use to you all?
