Hello everyone, I was too exited by this challenge, I just had to join in the fun.

Its my first time entering a cg channel contest.

There's lots of tallents in these forums, I'm really apreciating browsing through everyones work and would like you to show mine.

I'll start by explaning what I've done for now. I'm just about ready to start making my caracter in 3D.

I actually started this idea 2-3 weeks ago. I did some quick sketches on the plane ride back home for a caracter I wanted to sculpt in clay. I started to sculpt him and then came on cg channel for some eye pleasers and saw this challenge. I decided to modify my caracter who was allmost allready suitable for the challenges guide lines.

So here's a quick scketch for the caracter and its carying and also the sculpture. Please take note that the sculpture still lacks details and polishing for my taste. I decided to start right away with the 3D and finish my sculpture later so that I can put more time into the 3D since betwen work and my girlfriend there's not that much time.

Hope you enjoy and all your crits are welcome. Good luck to all.

Marc

hehehe I thought that those pics were the 3D model for a second. I was like: "holy crap that guys quick!!!" LOL

Anyway, it looks like a cool concept. And you definetly have good source material. ;)

Virtuoso:

Thank you, and yes it's super sculpey, it's not baked yet since I want to add in details.

It's a cool medium , you can do it on the couch.

For the digitiser I think it's not really in the spirit of this contest, plus I dont have on avalable. Anyways, at this point I prefer modeling my own surface more than cleaning up the scanned sculpture.
:p

With a bit of light tweaking and some creative wireframing, you could have almost passed the clay model off as 3d!

You could post comparison frames as you model, so we can see the likeness.

Just moving this one back up to the start of the list so I can get some crits. :)

Why don't you make a laser scan of him, you know those scanners which can scan clay moddels into 3D in the PC, really expensive stuff:shrug:
Nice to see a clay moddel for a chance Why not make that one in collor and so on it is to 3D or can only CG be used, well it is a CG forum, but why not.
Character is looking fun, can't wait to see it in a 3D program.
What are those metal things for to hold him up or are those chains to a rock?
maybbe he can pull a big rock that is still hanging behind him, He escaped with it from prison>OR something.

:wavey:

Artifex
07-08-2002, 07:06 PM
Iguiniz.X : It's an idea. But on the sculpture the metal things just to hold up the model in that pose so I can work on him without him somewhat melting down.

Great! Bit of poly-intersection (my word of the week) going on with those arms. The creases on the face are nice!

I just started to model the legs, they don't completely fit with the shorts. :hmm:

super sculpey eh? looks incredible, gotta check that out soemtime, would be something quite interesting to play with I guess, thanks for the inspiration! :)
The character is very cool btw, love the concept. Its also something not many others seem to have tried so its definitely original IMHO! Making good progress so far, looking forward to see the rest in 3D!

Artifex
07-17-2002, 04:04 PM
Gollum: Yeah sculpey is real cool. You can do it any time you want cause it's not messy. And doesn't dry till you cook it. It's like a hightech mix of plasticin and maze.

Thanks for the reply I'll try and keep posting more often.

07-18-2002, 09:00 AM
Looking at this pic I'm starting to wonder if it should not have smal almost tiny arms instead of the big ones I'f got in the sculpture.
What do you guys (and gals) think?

This looks cool...reminds me of critters. Good idea to scuplt it out first, I don't believe i've seen anyone else do that in here.
A couple of crits : define the hands some more (like the feet)...I would also like to see him with his mouth open...get some teeth and a tounge in there..

Do you guys think I should loose the shorts and model an ass?

I chose this caracter because he is chalenging in a sense that it is hard to figure out where to add details for him to become organic.
I'm working at that right now. I think alot of detail is there just not crisp enough. I thend to smooth the lines on him a bit too much I think...

Hey marc, awesome job re-creating your sculpture in CG. Now that I see it in 3D it's freaking me out. I don't know what it is but something about this model gives me the willies. Especially with the open mouth and big-ole teeth...*shiver*:surprised
I don't know it hit's me like something from E.A. Poe.

Artifex
07-25-2002, 03:43 PM
Well I dicided to loose the shorts, I felt it was holding my back detail wise. What do you think?

Awesome job on the modeling. I like the beast better without the shorts. Only crit would be that the "keychain-loop" on the top of it's head makes it look like a small toy.

Artifex
07-25-2002, 07:18 PM
Ya zro-1 your right, I was thinking of removing that detail and maybe even making the head rounder. I really have to start on the rest of it too. The challenge ends soon.

Thank you everyone who post on this thread.

Artifex
07-26-2002, 08:38 AM
hehe, I'll get a close-up of that latter. It's just an object thats gonna support the harnest.

Again: Comme on crits crits crits!!

ZrO-1
07-26-2002, 09:03 AM
hmmm crits...
From that last camera angle the outside toe looks detached from the heel. The main middle toe looks very square still. And I'd like to see the head have that "brainy" bump to it that you had in the sculpture now that you got rid of the key-chain loop. ;) :D

phil
07-26-2002, 09:08 AM
I'm being picky, but since you asked for crits...

The arms bother me. I like them, it's great modelling but the elbow doesn't feel like it would bend in the right place. I think the base of it needs to be pushed back.
The hands are on a funny angle, rotated up just too much, I know this will change when you pose him, but I'm being picky.
The fingers come out from the hands in too much of a straight line, like you made the hand from a box and just extruded fingers.
I think that they hands could be bigger too, get a bit more power into them.

Don't get me wrong dude I think your model is excellent, I'm just trying to offer some constructive crits, some of them might just be personal opinion in which case feel free to discard them as the ravings of a mad man.

Hope this helps. :)

LOL, it looks like it's singing a Sinatra song (is that a micro in his right hand? ;)

I like the design, though its cartoony look make it look less dangerous. I think if it is a beast capable of destroying buildings, its hands should be bigger and stronger.

Cheers

I decided on a new concept (since the old one was allready in use by Hiko...) So the new one is that my BOBs are small creatures that where found by a trouble maker adolescent that forces them to pull his stuff around for him.

So this is the wagon they put the stuff in. :)

Well these Brazil renders are pretty long, just one minute in Max scanline but not the same result :P so I won't be able to post any other angles but will probably post them on my web page soon. For close-ups of the caracter and the wagon browse the 2 previous pages. :)

MikeRhone

Good character design! Its good to see a few post that dont have MASSIVE beasts hauling huge things around. Pretty creepy though. If I saw one of those things taking my Red Flyer, I'de let them keep it. For what its worth, I prefer the monochromatic render. When you are limited to basic colors and no textures, it gives everything an amature "Early days of cg" feel to it. My only real critique would be to see a few more bump maps around. The characters have nice subtle ones which work, but maybe some nice scratches on that wagon would finish this shot right off.
