in max (4.2) if you aplly a meshsmoth to an object then edit the controll levels then go back to the low poly mesh stage and add verticies or the faces (i.e. extruding a face or many faces) the mesh smooth gets all messed up (i.e verticies are sticking out randomly) as well as all the changes on the meshsmooth level are lost. if someone could explain, provide a fix, etc annything would be apprecieated:airguitar

I think i've had that happen once or twice, but i've never had it been an issue. If you have meshsmooth applied and then edit it and it screws up, just delete it and reapply it. Did you click the box that says "leave faces convex" (something like that, sorry i forget)
If not you can also try moving the meshsmooth in the hierarchy, try putting it on the top. If that doesn't help, you might try the bottom (but it should be the top)

I never understood why you would want to edit the control levels. At least for me, this kind of workflow sucks because you have to jump around in the modifier stack. It seems like one of those ideas that only work fine in theory :)

I've seen this happen I think. It's almost as if the added piece is not being effected by the meshsmooth?

I agree with Kandyman, the work have to be done on the low res mesh.
One of the reasons is because the changes made by tweaking the meshsmooth parameters are not reflected on the low res model.
So when you start tweaking mesh smooth ,making changes
on the lo-res mesh becomes tricky and uncomfortable(when it works).

Note that (and it s a BIG shame) the new and unusable parameters appeared in Meshsmooth in max 4 makes it at least
twice slower than in Max 3.1.

Hello! Df. I guess Im a bit late to help :D, but i though since ppl search the forums, this might help someone. I'f you have played around alot with you controll mesh on the mesh smooth and then want to go back to extrude a face or whatever.

I made a leg, tweaked alot on the controll mesh, turned out super good, but then i wanted to go back and add more polys to make a hole human. My mesh really screwed up.

I wished that my original mesh was like the controll mesh.

I felt kind of stupid to not figure this out in 10 seconds, anyway. Put the Iterations on the mesh smooth to 0 and you'll get back to your lowploy mesh, collapse it into a editable poly. woila! Add a new meshsmooth and you're good to go.

Hope this helps, have fun ppl.

Do we all know about the HSDS modifier? Not that I'm personally using it, but for people who wants the ability to jump up and down the smoothing-iterations, do take a look.

It's not meant as a polysculpting tool, so its features are rather.. ah.. basic.
