I hope this is okay... I consider R2 to be a character and not just a piece of hardware; even though he's a bit of both...

I joined an R2 builder's club to access blueprints of the droid's construction to ensure better accuracy in the construction phase. All of his panels have a gap tollerances, and edges were eased to pick up light better.

A radiosity bake was used as the basis for the UV maps and were hand grunged up in Photoshop to help dirty his surfaces down.

DV footage was taken in Vasquez Rocks, tracked, than R2's elements were adding using DFX+.

Artoo was built, animated & rendered in Lightwave 7.5. The animation is located at: http://www.rowsby.com/Anim_R2D2_R1.html

Great composition, camera tracking, light matching, and animation. The dust and sound effects were a nice touch.

I can find no faults!

Nice composite! R2 seems to match his environment perfectly...
