Hey... here is a first research of color.
About the concept...
- The first ID which appears in my head by viewing the post of the 2D Challenge is a girl with some organique and mechanical muscle.
- This scene will take place in a nearly futur 'n will demonstrate pricisely the mix organique-mechanical and a bit electronic.
- This technique is a kind of new surgery practiced by the best of the doctors. (anatomy masters!)
- I want to make a big shot of the hand and studied the anatomy of the arm-hand to do a concept-design the more realistic.
- All muscles and elements need to be well placed and realy photorealist! It's My challenge!

I really like your composition, it's very dynamic.
However to my eyes the way the doctor is positioned looks a little like an afterthought and takes away from a really strong image. I'm sure this will develop really well, I'm be watching this thread anyway!

Ouch... You didn't choose an easy subject... But as everytime you post a work, I blame you for hesitating too much between realistic and non-realistic, this time it's clear!! :p
Keep going!

I try to accentuate some part of the pic by lighting and colors... It's not the good one! :p

Good, strong composition and a nice subject. Good details.
If I were you, I would separate the background (the woman) strongly from the foreground (the hand, the instruments and the surgeon), either with colors or lighting. In your latest schetch the hand doesn't stand out enought from the background and the effect is a bit chaotic. Besides, why would the womans naked body be brightly lighted? The doctor is operating only on the hand. Or are there some voyeurs nereby? :)

03-25-2004, 07:32 PM
Looking good so far. Although one thing which confuses me here is the perspective. It's very hard to figure out that what's the distance between the characters.
The doc is working on the elbow area although his scale (eg compare the size of his hands with the patient's) suggests that he would appear to be more close to the "camera".
Also, the doc's eye doesn't seem to point at the area he's operating at.
Keep up the good pace :)
Pierrick
03-25-2004, 09:04 PM
Hem... so...
>> Pumpuli: Yeah, U probably have right about the background. But I'm studied how to keep a good contrast (between the innocent girl and this violent surgery) and atenuate the chaotic side.
I will probably remove the mask on the girl to show clearly her innocent face to accentuate this contrast.
It s so easy to represent a shocking scene... i just want to show this big opposition.
I hav added the blue light not cause im a voyeurs! Maybe it is my avatar which show me as a dangerous psychotic guy!! But no, i don't.
The blue light reveal a innocent and beautifull girl and if I hide the girl, the composition is only focused on the arm-hand... not what i want.
Anyway, i will post some details soon.
:D
>> nitroSqueel : The doctor isn't so important. On my last post, i have changed a bit the composition... It was right that he was a bit too out of the action. cheers!
Go on for commenting!!
Commander Falk

Hey ! I'm a voyeur ! :D
Mmh, in the last one there's too much of anything I think, I don't really know where to look at, because of the lazer light, the doctor's tool light, and the light on the body.
Mmh we already talked about, but the doctor operating with the head so close to the body seems weird to me.
IMO, this kind of "micro-surgery" would be done with a micro-camera or something like that, and th doctor would move 2 joysticks to operate.
Of course this would change your illus' quite "a bit".
Personnally, I would try to play with the beauty of the girl, the "relative" beauty of metal pieces (chrome, the lazer, and things like that), and the "uglyness" of the blood and flesh (well it's not that ugly, but when we see it, it means there's something wrong :D )
Tcho' !

I like your graphical aproach to your color sketch but like Commander Falk mentioned. He makes some valid points.
Anyways this piece makes me feel wierd because I burned my right hand with lard last summer check it out if you dare. (I'm warning you its sick)!!!

this is the billion dollar girl ;)
Good luck for your picture !!! Because photorealism is very hard to do without photo references !!!
Beware of anatomy pbs, your sketch must be "perfect" before coloring. I think there are some pb with the perspective of the arm... the forearm is a bit small compared to the hand, and the hand is very big compared to the doctor's head...

I like the overall composition, and it's a very compelling image. I chose to have a look at your entry because the thumbnail pic on the machineflesh entry viewing page works well, and that's always a good sign. People have made some good constructive comments which I agree with, too.
I do find myself wishing that the fleshy sinews and muscle was a little bit darker and deeper red. And maybe oozing a bit more, and looking more wet.....
I'll be keeping my eye on this one, good luck!

wow man, this ROCKS!
my only comment is about the laser/light on the right side. it seems a bit distracting... i keep going from where the dr.'s working to there and back. if you were to lose the light there, and add a little more light to the hand itself, i think it might work better, imho.
but that's fairly minor compared to the awesome job you've done so far. love the choice of the green light; it works well.

Ho, cheers for all this positiv replies!!
I have modified the attitude of the doc', change the position of the "litl" finger. This position seems to be more natural.
I have mainly worked on the doctor. The hands are more detailed...
So, That's all for today... I'm too tired.

I had some comments, a lot in agreement with other feedback, but you've dealt with a lot of it when you dealt with the lighting. I'd love to see more details in the arm and focused area. I think you mentioned that you are working on that though -
Nice Work!
This is absolutely beautiful. Great Job. A masterpiece in the making.

Pierrick,
I'm surprised to see how much your piece has evolved since your first subimission. I love seeing work in progress, step by step like that. Later, I'm going to take a good look at it and break it down so I can learn from it.
Nice lighting, color and composition... you were able to generate mood in this piece and not too many people are able to accomplish that. Good job man!
My only concern Pierrick is: what you have been working on so far, to me, looks more like concept art for film (or a film pitch) than character design itself.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or if you desagree in any way, but isn't this mainly a character design contest?
Aside from the details on the mechanical arm, how much character design are you really showing in your illustration?
That's my one and only concern Pierrick. But aside from that, you do great work man, and it's inspiring...
let me know your opinion on this...

I would have to say that the rules just say create an image.....
It does specify all the ways they want it to be unique, along with suggestions....but I figured 3d was more character design and 2d was more illustration....could someone let me know if they find out certainly otherwise??
I believe this image does a good job with telling a story, and suggesting reasons someone might use this technology while showing the precedure. The attention to detail is wonderful and you have a great sense of mood. I can't wait to see the final!
Again - anyone let me know if they find out otherwise on the specifics of character desig vrs a finalized illustration?
Thank You

This is really progressing nicely. The only thing that I'm not sure about is where your trying to lead the eye. There's so many tubes and such, but they're not leading the eye to a central focal point...yet. I do believe it will come naturally.

Hi,
just thought that it maybe would be a good idea to show some smoke were the lasers hit the flesh... offensive smell would give the image a new component...
Lovely colours! And very well rendered!
All the tendons and muscles etc look really good... and the technology fits in nicely. You could probably add some pipes or machinery to the foreground as an overlay to add a bit more dept? But thats the only bit of constructive criticism i can offer because it a great pic. Good luck!
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=139150
I would exagerate the DOF effect, so the mech hand comes closer to camera, and the BG monitors just become into flaring lights. Definetely, I would eliminate the volume light on the FG. It is not clear where could it come from, so it just disturbs. On the other hand, your colouring process rocks, and it's leading you to a very nice pic. Congrats!

Looks like you have a great piece going on there. I saw this from the start and liked the composition. I would though if you have the time try to finish the nude girl, maybe be able to see bits and pieces of her body through light. The color tone of the above blue seems great. wow, everytime i see a certain section of this piece that is way detailed and looks finished, you get even tighter and it looks even better. Splendid work. I saw the earlier versions and toght it wasnt gonna be the greatest as it looked like a big jumble where nothing popped from the rest. But youve solved that problem nicely and the arm is definitely front and center. I would like to see the rest of her figure lighted a bit better in the bckground as she seems almost totally lost but you may be planning to do that eventually anyway so I will wait and see, :-)

Awesome colour work, i assume theyll be asking you to use that image in some medical journal in a couple of years. Excellent work, the way youve managed to capture the muscle tendons and the strechyness of the flesh against the mechanical insutruments, sweet. Congrats:thumbsup: :D

I personaly think this is the most imaginitive piece of art I seen in this contest, shows so much detail. I really hope this wins. I cant fault it one bit! Only crit I would give, the hand which is dangling free, is a lil to blury, I think it was better when it was sharper.
