View Full Version : Interior: Bedroom
otacon 03-23-2004, 05:06 AM I just finished this up, the scene was done in ligtwave. It's supposed to be a murder scene....but i only put small hints that might suggest that something happened, and tried to get the lighting to look kind of creepy. Comments appreciated.:D

I like it. Well done. It doesn't really look "creepy" though. For that i'd try to add more contrast and maybe not so many warm colors. Experiment with color scheme if you want more mood.
p.s. another thing... the knife... it doesn't stand out at all. Nothing leads me to the knife and it doesn't look like someone just died there. Need more blood for that and the scene composition needs to lead the eye to the knife as well.

I don't know, I think the lighting does a good job for that feel. It has that kind of "creepy dusty atticy" type effect (pardon the -y words), where it's "bright" and the colors are warm, yet it seems as if you don't really know what's up there.
As I said in the WIP thread, I like it! Good job!

heyhey! Great concept! Props!
Could you please post some details in a slightly larger resolution like you did on the WIP thread?

I think you should change the perspective to show the bloody knive a bit better. Cause most people might miss it. And if you miss the knive it's not a really creepy place. It actually quite cozy.
The room is very well executed though.

Looks very good. I like it very much.
But its a very "Clean" murder scene. If you wanna go for the creepy feel, than I suggest to put some blood stains here and there, and maybe a Grain filter with Photoshop...

Thanks. The reason for the low contrast is to make the room look kinda dusty and still. I didnt want to load it up with a bunch of blood, but i wanted to give it that same feeling without obvious things.(BTW there is some blood under the light switch). Heres some close ups of the details...

I really like this image its really nice, well modeled and rendered as well, as for the blood thing I can understand why you wouldnt want to go with the hollywood overkill on the blood but maybe like have a blood trail going out of the room, or like maybe whoever did this had to drag the body out of the room and there is a trail of blood from them.
I guess the problem im having is the story the pic tells is not fitting with the pic, reason being is why would the killer go into a room drop the knife and turn off the lights ? like whats the importance of this room ? I guess they could be in the bathroom inside the room ? but that is not obvious right off the bat, maybe if you were trying to get the viewer to thing that way put like a mirror near the bed and the reflection is a door half open with bloody handprints on it and some water from an overflown bath tub :) anyhow like I said its an awsome work of art :) keep it up

Hey, thats realy good, liked the details. But if you want to have more creepy feeling, then you need some blood on the bed(not much) and blod drippels to the knife.
I`m also working on a interior scene so I know thats harder thant it seems:)
Keep up the good work!

I like it. I really like the light that falls across the sheets. They actually look soft. Some shadows coming in from the outside (created by trees perhaps) would really help the "creepy" mood. Right now it looks like a nice room that needs a little cleaning and that someone accidentally dropped a knife in.

I really love it, i think its perfect the way it is. At first glance its kind of like a nice house, then i spotted the bloody knife on the floor and the turned over lamp, and i got a shiver up my spine. Great job :)

very nice work, but the problem is not the knife or the amount of blood you put in this room. It's all about the lighting, and you have to much of it.....try making the hallway alot darker and the same goes for under the bed,to make it feal like whoever did this could still come out from out of the shadows........maybe if you had the room a little bit darker so that we could see the sun light coming in trough the window to frame the knife on the floor...................................nice work

.....yet it seems as if you don't really know what's up there.
for me, the best comment for this scene...

ps: ...I don't like so much the stool behind the door,... it's redundant..not needed, specially if you've already a great scene!

I agree with Shaykai - the subtly is great. I don't like the idea of it becoming a hollywood murder scene. Your choice or warm lighting is perfect. It invites you in, making you think it's a comforting place to be, then backstabs you (literally) when you notice the well-placed details. Your texturing is especially noteworthy (ie. the floor rug). Those two wire-hangers on the door handle fit the scene well.

First of all... the modeling, texturing, and lighting is excellent! Great job! However, I don't feel the "creepy." The place is too clean for murder scene. You have the blood and the knife, but if someone gets stabbed with a knife that big, the blood would be all over (don't ask how I know this.) I think if you wanted to make this bedroom look somewhat creepy, but still retain the brighter atmosphere, then switch to cooler colors. Perhaps add a blood stain on the rug too... just a suggestion. Great job though. Is this going to be part of an animation, or just a still?

I really like the way floor is lightened. I just can't stop looking at it. It's not photorealistic, but it contains a much deeper emotions, IHMO.
The one thing that bothers me is overall contrast of the shadows and light. Should be more separated.

Thanks! Frontpage! That was a new years resolution of mine!! Awesome!:bounce:
atenyotkin: Its just a still, no animation.
Really good crits from everyone. I know what you guys mean about the knife, and the blood, and the color choices...I actually had the knife sticking out of the door in the wip thread, but someone said it might look better just laying on the floor. Its hard to please everyone. But i still have the original render, and i might go back and rework the color scheme and contrast...
I wanted to do warm colors because i wanted it to be like an old house in the country....on a hot, hazy summer day.....you walk into this room and feel uneasy because of the misy atmosphere, you see the knife and the blood, and you want to run out as fast as you can. :D

I quite like this, but to me it is a bit clean, and the textures look a bit flat to me, maybe it is the lighting, and I agree that maybe there should be a bit of blood.

I think the lighting needs more orange in it then...
I love the details!
I hope this isnt another part of your house!

Looks good, I'd work on the bed some more though. Especially the pillows, look like they're floating and not really laying on it, add a few more wrinkles here and there to, it will help and give it more of a lived in, messed up look. I'd also add a few drops of blood on the floor next to the knife, don't have to go crazy, just a tad, perhaps from droping it?.. Might also want to try playing with your shadows hue a bit, could get it more creepy yet without changing the scene or feel of it much.

I like the subtlety as well and I'm glad you didn't go for the expected and obvious.
Darkness, long shadows, cool colors are all pretty typical for a 'creepy' mood.
The challenge is to evoke the creepiness without that standard checklist. Glad to see this :)

Octagon,
I think it's a beautiful render, and I couldn't make many comments as far as technical issues.. You nailed the scene.
However, as for the murder scene, I would have some suggestions. It appears to me that you threw in a little bit of everything that you might find in a scene. As a police officer with 6 years under my belt, I've seen quite a few of them. It looks like you're suggesting a little bit of everything (i.e. you have the suitcase shifted halfway out to show signs of someone hurried, the knife on the floor, some dissheveledness on the counter), however a little of everything doesn't necessarily equal mystery. Instead, I would recommend using what you already have and re-directing things a bit. You can even some some of the basic art rules and maybe face the knife in a direction where you want the viewers' eyes to go, things like that. Also, if a knife has blood stains, that means that blood has poured from the body, so there should be blood. Hollywood doesn't exaggerate all that much.. the human body has a lot of blood, and a knife of that length would make some serious puncture wounds.
Keep it rocking, it's turning out very well.

hello otacon, i think u achoeved a very nice work, but the creepy feeling isnt there, i dont say u need to spill blood all over, but work a bit the light, of course u can hav a murder scene with that light, but to achieve a creepy feeling u should give more contrast to the light, and give a bit of orange

love the warm lighting!! Great modeling and texturing. Wouls loveto know how you lit this up exactly. I guess the real creepy thing to me is the lamp on the chest-of-drawers. Well, what I mean is, someone breaks in, there is a struggle, someone is stabbed and when the lamp falls, someone takes the time to break the fall so that the bulb does not break. Now thats creepy.

I really like the concept because, at first it looks like a calm, serene bedroom scene, but then you start to notice the lamp knocked over and the bloody knife on the ground and everything. Very nice.

One way to acheive a more creepy feel would to change the overall tones from red/brown to green/blue and then up the contrast. Think of images from the Minority Report.

I agree with the comments already made. Gotta change up the lighting a bit and make the room "dustier" if you want that creep-out feel.
Also, for subtlety I would recommend ditching the knife. Get rid of it because having the knife lying there doesn't give that inconspicuous feeling you're after. Instead, I'd maybe stick a few blood drops in the hallway, leaving the room.
And maybe a reflection of something sinister in the mirror.
Otherwise I like it!

the scene looks rather dreamy then creepy...maybe is because of the color and the mood and feel u are having now is more to morning scene ...other than that..great work

Great render, texturing, modelling, lighting and great attention to detail, but... murder scene and creepy feeling.... hm...
To me the things look as if they have been strewn around hapazardly (maybe someone already said that). I think maybe there should be just a tiny bit more blood, droplets coming from the knife as it was carried into the room. Looking at the lamp, it looks as if someone took the lamp shade off and used that or the lamp itself for something, but maybe that is part of the "mystery". Was there a fight in the bedroom, then maybe the carpet should be slightly crumpled or partly overturned.
You wanted a slight suggestion to a murder scene, maybe the room should look tidier, but with the blooded(?) knife sticking out from underneath of something and a few drops of blood, and just a few small things that look wrong somehow, at closer inspection, things that the murderer forgot to tidy up.
For the colours and lighting (for the creepy feeling), I would suggest, more colours, and more contrast to the lighting and more shadows. Otherwise I definately like the lighting and the almost monochromatic clolour scheme. Maybe a cooler colour and more contrast if you stil want to go for the monochromatic colours.
But as I said, great work!

My knee-jerk reation is to say "That's not a crime scene!" But I agree with AmnesicElephant. It sort of plays with your expectations. It looks innocent at first glance, but you can put the pieces together when you see the details. I wouldn't say it's necessarily creepy or disconcerting however. It's awesome all the same.

Wow, great scene! A few questions though. How did you light it, especially getting the volume light and interior light bounce and how did you get that light across the mirror affect?
As for the theme:
It is creepy because of the possibilities. There is every reason to assume that someone was murdered somewhere and then the assailant ran into this room looking for something. Now it is the morning after.....

This is very nice. Great!
Too me it is telling me of a story of a woman or man trying to leave the other and starts to pack and then the other man or woman stabs them and the wounded person tries to make it downstairs to the phone or something. The only thing I would add would be more blood around the knife and may be a small drip trail towards the door.
But over all it is great work. I would like to see a wire.

Great image! I like all the little details you put in. I agree with the suggestions for a little more blood and also with the idea of making the knife point at something in the scene that you want to draw the viewer's attention to. Right now it's pointing out of the scene. But all in all, very, very nice work! Congrats on getting on the front page.

hmmm
Very nice image but not what your going for I think.
I like the sepiatonal theme you've got going on. Like where looking at an older photo or something... but the room is too well lit to be creepy.
I'm thinking that if you pulled the knife out of the picture you'd most likely find the picture in Home&Garden or some other home mag. You need more dark spots and definatly darken up the room and maybe have the shadow of someone in the hallway.
I don't know just my 2 cents

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think everyone is right about maybe adding some more blood drops on the ground. I guess i could have ditched the murder thing, and instead just let people try and figure out what might have happened...there could be many possibilities.

It looks good, but it certainly isn't even close to creepy. and if someone were to kill someone with a knife, it would be very obvious that this place was a murder scene.
If it wasn't for the knife this would be a basic room scene. The volumetric light is way too strong too.

Its a really complete work, i like the little signs that peep about the murder.Maybe it would be better if you put a bit more blood on the floor or on te wall (I saw the blood mark nearby the door).
