View Full Version : interaction help
Ezekiel6 03-22-2004, 04:34 PM Just have a quick question about animating characters and if there are any simple ways to get them to interact with objects. For example I have a character that has a gun in his holster. The gun is in the same layer as the body so that it will move with the bones but, if I were to give the gun its own bone, how would I go about getting it to stick to the leg while holstered but be able to detach and stick to the hand when drawn? Would I just have to do 2 characters 1 with gun 1 without and splice them together in premiere or something?

Couple of ways, You could put the gun on its own layer and use dynamic parenting to attatch it to the hand when you need it. You could also leave the gun in his holster, and have a copy in his hand, (each on separate layers) and dissolve the appropriate one when you need him to move it.

The dissolving sounds like a good idea, although I may us that as my last resort. How do I do the dynamic parenting though? That sounds interesting. I'm using Lightwave 7.5b by the way, can that handle dynamic parenting?
Cheers for your help.

Search flay.com for the dynamic parenting. There are a few plugins that do it...some free, some commercial. RB_DynamicFollower (http://www.richardbrak.net/lscript/index.html) | Override (http://www.geocities.com/nurbousbreakdown/override/override.html) | Worley's Parent (http://www.worley.com/polk/polk_parent.html) I have heard dynamic parenting is kindof unstable and a PITA to use sometimes...kinda like IK. :p I would say the dissolve idea is by far the easiest and most stable way to do what you need. That is the approach I will be using for my samurai character and his sword. Why make life more difficult than it needs to be when there is an easy fast solution that won't take lots of testing and research to get it to work.

The dissolving thing is the easiest and most directly way to do it.
LW does have dynamic parenting and as Shaun pointed out theres additional plugins but nothing is as simple as the dissolve thingy. :)

Cheers guys for your help, I'll take a look at the dynamic parenting just to see what it's about but I'll take your advice and go with the dissolving. Thanks again.
