CGTalk - Depth Fading

Hi all ,

Softimage has a feature called depth fading
where the image gets blurry in the background and less so in foreground

now i know maya has depth of feild
but it seems to give me craptacular results
never seems to be quite right

any tuts/suggestions?

Seems to work alright with stills
but once the character moves forward it gets all funky again

and animating it seems to be a whole other set of headaches

ill use shake
