View Full Version : Bones' rigged juice-box

Ok.. I really feel stupid today.
i can rig a single-mesh or segmented biped and animate him with no problems at all...
BUT I CAN"T RIG A STUPID JUICE BOX WITH 2 BONES!!!!!!
I know it's easy.... but I really don't know what I'm doing wrong!!!

I would normally use a deformer for this... but as some of you know the animation session requires this to be done with 2 bones!
Also, I could increase the box's resolution, but as you can see, it's preety dense already!

Here's 2 scenarios...
a) A box with 2 bones, and no vertex maps will deform the whole box, including it's base (which is a bad thing) - plus it will not preserve it's volume... but that's another story.

b) With vertex maps, the box breaks into jagged edges...even if each vertex map is feathered with 100,75,50 and 25% maps.

Here's what I mean...
(btw-If you tell me to delete this thread because it's too stupid to answer... or to go and read the manual... I'll understand - heck! I would probably do the same thing myself!)

(with no maps the bottom is also deforming instead of staying glued to the floor)

(with maps the bottom stays put, but the mid-section breaks!)

I've been trying to transition over from Animation Master to C4D because the renderer is so fast and high quality, but I haven't been able to get one useable character yet becuase of all the weirdness with C4D's bone weighting. Maybe we should all get behind threads like this and give Maxon some motivation to give us better rigging tools.

before anyone else jumps and answers (instead of answering my question), let me clarify my position...

I think C4D's rigging tools are very adequate in its core version. If you add MOCCA, I'm sure they are much, much more competitive. If you add Motionbulder (which is my case) the process becomes very user friendly and even enjoyable! (C4D - MB marriage is a God-sent!!!!)

Now, that said... anyone has an answer to my 1 box-2bone question????

heres a simple setup for you.

use the rotator to control the bones rotation

MAN!!!!!

You're SO nice.
Thanks!

I do have to ask one question. What did you do that was so different? I see the bones with restriction tags and a simple vertex map for the top of the cube. Is the secret hidden in the expresso expression?

Nah the xpresso is just so you have a snazzy controller makes animating easer. id say its that i have one vertex map only

thats a guess with out looking at your file

awright! got it!

It was a combo of a couple of things:
a) My mesh was apparently WAAAAAY too subdivided and without a hypernurbs object (which still doesn't make that much sense... but that seemed to be the main difference... that and the other map)
b) I JUST DISCOVERED ANCHOR TAGS!!!!!!!! What on earth is it good for? Who knows... I'll have to wait home until I get to the manual.

THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!

It does make sense. The thing with bone deformation (or any deformation really) is that you will get a better result using a lower poly count and a HNURB. The reason is that the bone will deform the low poly mesh and then the HNURB will then smooth out the deformation with sub-division.

is what? the ability, or the file. The file is only for cinema 4D, the ability to do the same thing in max maya XSI and LW is all thre, and really simple to do in most of them too.

This particular thread is in the Cinema4D forum and thus a Cinema4D-specific question. However, the animation challenge that I assume you're referring to is open to everyone and is at: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=132255

You can get all of your questions answered there (most of which have probably already been answered).

Cheers,
Josh
