Frédéric Pétrequin has entered the Machineflesh 2D Challenge.
03-22-2004, 02:31 PM
Hi! This is the first step in the process, a quick sketch for an ElectroChimere. I will try to give her a knight style, preparing for a tournament, with servitors checking her body and fixing her armor.
03-22-2004, 03:07 PM
She reminds me of a magic the gathering character see: http://www.wizards.com/global/images/magic/general/Tsabo_Tavoc.jpg
I think you might need to give her some more original edge, there seem to be quite some people that make characters enhanced for fighting. But that shouldn't be a problem as long as you can give your scene in which the character features something evocative/original :)
03-22-2004, 03:26 PM
Good luck mon pote !
Let's rock :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:
03-22-2004, 03:46 PM
Thanks for reply! :)
Jawine>> I didn't know that character from magic... ^_^
My inspiration for this work will come mostly from the manticore and the Led Dragon from Five Star Stories. (I'm a huge Mamoru Nagano's design fan :D )
Also 2 illustrations I know share the same concept of ingeniors/servitors. One is from Games Worshop Inquis Exterminatus, named "inquisitor Hand", the other is from Der Mond, the artbook of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, with a robotic girl page 105 in the french edition. Both have a strong evocative power :)
Oh yes, I forgot the old High Elf Warhammer Griffon, I always loved it.
You're enterly true about the number of character enhanced for fighting, I will effectively try to be a bit more original in that way of thinking... Maybe I'm Wrong, but I noticed everyone for the moment focalised on only one creature with mechanical parts, not several collapsed in the same body. That's why I will surely give her parts which come from other animals (as instance, a tiger for the back)
Btw, thanks for that advice!
Falk>> oué! :D
03-22-2004, 04:58 PM
Good to hear my feedback was useful, some feedback on my machineflesh entry would help me a lot, see the link in this post :)
Well a fighting person can work as long as it refers to broader things than a fight. Heh that's always the hard part ^0^
03-22-2004, 07:22 PM
I began the lines... More perspective now, but not yet perfect. Currently working on the lance design. It will include a kind of integrated beam weapon. :D
03-23-2004, 07:31 AM
More details about the concept. :)
I will try for this illustration to mix the universes of formula 1 (or any racing sport), medieval knights and FPS games.
In a futuristic popular TV game, teams of knights are fighting in natural or artificial arena. She is one of her. After some battle, her chest armor has been damaged, so she stopped to change it. Her technicians and ingeniors came to her with the equipement for fixing the armor, and eventually for repairing/changing other pieces. That's pit stop! :)
All technicians have to move fast, so they will have flypack and so on for transporting the equipement. One will surely carry a flag.
I will add lots of sponsors on her body, these TV games must be good for publicity!
That's all for the moment, I will post the next drawing in a few hours. :)
03-23-2004, 09:19 AM
Working on the composition... Lots of tweaking to do for the technicians, but the idea is now more clear. :)
03-23-2004, 01:02 PM
Juste the beginning but i like it a lot!...
Bonne chance!! je vais m'inscrire...
03-23-2004, 02:08 PM
Just a part... As the design is quite complex in some areas, I started to add quick shadows and Highlights. The front claw will be organic, coming from a kind of big mutant bird of prey.
03-23-2004, 02:38 PM
yeah!! cool
03-24-2004, 09:01 AM
I started to add indications for the sponsors... For the moment, as I didn't want to search too long, the sponsors are names of politic french guys... Hem...
I changed a little the global composition, too. I will surely add more perspective.
Comments and crits are welcome! :)
03-24-2004, 11:18 AM
Nice sketch Fred... Like your sponsors name!! ;)
03-24-2004, 02:21 PM
wow that's truely amazing.
03-24-2004, 04:59 PM
Looking good, looking good ^0^
The idea of sponsors to relate it to sports matches we have nowadays is pretty cool, sponsors on her remind me of F1 races ^0^
This idea has been done before in other ways but hey it looks cool and that's what usually matters most :p
03-24-2004, 08:03 PM
Thanks everyone! :)
>> Franky_Mo, Riki: Glad to see you like it! ^_^
>>Jawine: Thanks! And yep, I know that sponsors are not perfectly original, in fact one of the illustrations I refered sooner uses sponsors too... But it's in a pure racing contest. I hope for my work, that it will give the idea of something more complex than just "nice gun and nice girl!" :)
BTW, I'm currently redrawing all the girl, hem, I mean, the Chimere. I want to give a more dynamic look to the illustration, despite the pit stop concept. And I want a bigger creature.
So I will add 2 more arms, and will put her on a kind of energy tank... All the technicians will have more dynamic pose, showing that they can move very fast if needed.
Thanks again! Comments and crits are always welcome! ;)
03-25-2004, 04:39 AM
Great concept, great execution!!!!
Also amazing lineart... very dynamic!:applause:
03-25-2004, 02:43 PM
yep one thing for sure .. your drawings are really good! I can't wait to see your next one.
the only thing..
first. yes! it's refreshing to see something else than an enhanced warrior gun machine type of character.
When I first open this tread today, I looked at all your drawings without reading what you and the others had wrote down about it.
At my first look at it I saw a mermaid then with the other sketches I though that you added servants and gave her somekinda of throne.. to me she looked like an underwater godess ... mermaid.. or something like that.
Finaly, I read all your comments. .. I do see clearly now what you wanted to do but I had to read it to see it.. ( don't know if i'm clear enough ehehe ). I don't think that the sponser is going to be sufficient to evoque that F1 theme.
I've been trying to think of something for you.. to give you and idea.. but the only thing I can come up with is to put her an helmet or somekinda of t-shirt with a number on it (like you see in the olympics for example.) maybe you can refer to that famous black and white flag .. dunno...
anyways I will take a look at your next sketch, maybe a different posture will make the difference.
03-25-2004, 05:34 PM
Tommy Lee: Thanks! :)
Batmel: Thanks for the advice! And yep, you're right, in fact I'm not surprised ;)
I do not want to refer exactly to formula 1 (I said F1 more as an example), just want to give the feeling that it's a mix between sports with teams, and First Person Shooters (or action games). And a little to medieval knights and dragons, too. Some kind of medieval tournament but with Hi tech equipement and more money in the business.
In the first Unreal Tournament, there was a story like "it's a TV game, sponsored by the Liandri Corporation blabla. Wow what a complex story." But it was quite strange, there was absolutely no sponsors on the characters, except the concept of blue or red team.
It's not like that in the real world, gamers who are playing FPS in real competitions are sponsored by software and hardware firm.
For the moment, I can say that my design is a little stupid :hmm: , because there is not enough flat areas for sponsors. And yep, I had the idea of the numbers, but not at the moment I added the sponsors  . I will try to push forward the concept of team.
BTW, thanks again!
I will post soon a more precise design of the technicians... ^_^
03-25-2004, 06:25 PM
If I ever think of something more elaborate than numbers (lol) I'll let you know here..
by the way.. I really like your work.. :p
03-25-2004, 09:27 PM
No machineflesh concept in this one... He's just one of the many technicians for the ElectroChimere. He is well protected, with flypack for quick moving to any repair bay in the arena. He has got tools attached to his belt, and in the trousers, too. Got a multi-usage screwdriver in his left forearm.
The helmet is supposed to refer to medieval knights. This character is smaller than a normal human, and have larger shoulders, for better performances.
As ever, crits and comments are welcome! :)
03-25-2004, 11:33 PM
hey ! it's me again.. :bounce:
cool job on the technician. I like all the little elements that you added helmet, number, belt tools.. etc..
03-26-2004, 06:58 AM
I liked the sketche in the "pitstop way"
Nice concept !
I keep in touch with this thread.
J'aime beaucoup l'idée de faire une illustration sur le thème de la compétition.
J'avais eu a un moment un concept dans ce genre là. Je le garde peut-être pour
la 2D. Si je m'inscris aussi.
Nice work, good attention to details.
03-26-2004, 09:05 PM
Mmh, lookin' good :D
Though I'd say it doesn't look medieval enough. The sort of eva's chin looks particularly futuristic and diminishes the mediaval look of the helmet.
Even though I don't think you want it to look medieval instead of futuristic, just a bit more medieval references may be good^^.
Maybe a few ornements^^
Keep up the good work
03-27-2004, 09:10 AM
Batmel: Thanks again :)
harnelbe : Thanks! No problems if you want to use the competition concept... Im' looking to your thread, too... And I will surely enter the 3D contest if I have enough time. ^_^
Falkounet: Yep, you're surely right with the Eva's chin. It is not necessary to the design. For the ornementations, I will try, but the technicians will be quite small and I'm not sure it will be visible.
The new drawing was on his way, but at last, I wasn't happy with it. Currently redoing it, once again...
Will surely post more test of design for the chimere soon... :wip:
03-27-2004, 04:48 PM
Color version of the technician (once again, it's not the main character, no machineflesh concept for him). I'm now going to put more emphasis on the medieval details and the sponsors.
At the beginning, I was quite happy with the trousers, but at last it looks like too much a Soccer short >_< (And I hate soccer...)
Oh, I must admit here that I learned painting by studying Brom's artworks... ^_^ He's one of my beloved masters...
As ever, comments and crits are always welcome!! :)
03-27-2004, 05:10 PM
very good job
i like your work ,good luck and more please.
ton travail est merveilleux ,j'adore , j'espere que tu va reussir a décroché le premier prix ,bonne chance

heh. Your awesome work is stealing the NEEDED critiques from us les fortunate younger graphic artists :P
Very nice, your colored concept sketch looks like something I'd work weeks on.
How did you go about creating the texture on the wall behind him? Im just learning, but I would like to try and make my walls look nice and textured like that.
03-27-2004, 05:30 PM
very good job
et vivement la suite
03-27-2004, 07:50 PM
Looking very nice!
I can't wait too see more
03-27-2004, 10:24 PM
Thanks to everyone!
Matrixreality>> Thanks!! I will try to do the best I can, but there are amazing artists with incredible skills here :buttrock: . It will be hard! BTW, a wip contest is surely the best way to learn a lot from others, and that's maybe more important. :)
flyingP>> Lol, in fact I was traumatized by soccer at school  . But I didnt' want rugby trousers too!! I failed for this, will have to correct... I want something more like trousers from the empire soldiers of Warhammer. BTW, thanks for reply! ^_^
STLX>> Thanks! I will try to post a comment to most of the other threads, sometimes I'm too lazy, sorry ^_^
For the wall, there are two technics, but both use acrylic painting, and of course a scanner is needed.
This background is painted on rigid painter (200g). First I put a basic tone, with a lot of imperfections. Once dried, I project water drops on it, with different brush. A the end it looks like old paper with blotch or spot.
There is another technic, more tricky and longer. It's the one used by Brom. (...trying to explain it in english, ugggg)
Paint your paper with a HUGE quantity of white acrylic. At the end, your paper must looks like roughcast. Then, once dried, you have to paint on that, using washing, that is to say diluted, thined colors. The result is really like a wall, great texture for all backgrounds and 3D maps.
This technic is harder because acrylic dries quickly. You must use retarder if you work on a sheet of paper bigger than A4.
Hope it was usefull... Hope It's not full of too much mistakes...
Thanks again! See you tomorow, time to sleep here. ^_^
03-28-2004, 04:57 PM
I believe this will be the last design of the technician... I changed the shoulders, trousers, helmet, and corrected /added some details.
Crits always welcome!! ++!! :)
03-29-2004, 04:31 AM
Ok here are the crits:
-his left arm is shorter then the right one
-his left hand is smaller than his right
-the perspective of the "ears" look strange
Thats all... allover very nice:thumbsup:
Keep going dude:beer:
03-29-2004, 08:28 AM
i really like your first line art, and now the high lights are really starting to fill it out, interested to see how it's going to turn out.
03-29-2004, 08:48 AM
Hey Mr Friedrich!!!
Yeah, I really recognise your style there! I know you are going to done a lot of research of design... so I waiting for the next ones to post some helpful replies.
Anyway, for this one, the design is pretty "Friedrichness"! Nothing to say about it. (You know my styles :p) I know you have done the sketch quickly but for the other ones, just try to correct some disimetrys... the ears, the shoulders...(the others have been noticed...) But You know it! So....
I know your skills and can say that the final picture will be powerfull! but this one.... Your lighting make appears it a bit flat.
Anyway, you have a powerfull style... i like specially the line-art... Great Style and design!
Go on Old Friends!! :buttrock:
03-29-2004, 02:14 PM
Yeah, cool stuf man. Looks like a fallouts brotherhood of steel, nice thing. I'm still looking for your work progress.
I think im going to do some colourconcepts tomorrow.
U got me thinking.
03-30-2004, 11:48 AM
Tommy Lee >> Oh, yeah, you're right... That kind of mistakes are still happening when I'm too fast... Sigh... BTW, thanks for your comment!!! :) I will correct it for my book, but no reason to post it here again, it's useless.
olidale, Climbazise >> Thanks a lot guys! :)
Pierrick >> Thanks buddy  , I know it's a bit flat, and that green color is always hard to pick >_<. But well, 2 years ago I was spending 5 days on a painting like that, and now it's 5 hours...
E.T >> Cool to see I can inspire someone! Thanks!
Time to work again on the main character now...
04-05-2004, 10:24 AM
boujour je voudrais savoir si c'est le robot que vous allez developer parce que j'aime bien sa carrure bon boulot:thumbsup:
04-05-2004, 01:56 PM
Great fantasy stuff, your soldier is a bt classic compared to your chimere, perhaps you could do something more original, for the technician.
Good luck though I love your chimere, and I wait the new pose
04-05-2004, 07:31 PM
Looking good so far. Can't wait to see the set up in perspective. It'll definitely give that push to put your work at an exquisite quality.
04-05-2004, 10:09 PM
wilfrid >> Le cyborg n'est qu'un technicien, il y'en aura 4-5 comme lui dans l'illustration finale. :) Merci pour le commentaire! ^_^
bonestudio >> Technicians must not catch too much the attention in the final illustration, and they will be very small... That's why I didn't push too much the design for them. BTW, thanks for your comment! :)
jacqjacq >> Thanks! :scream:
I'm quite busy at present time with my incoming web site, so no updates for the moment, maybe in a few days... 'Can just say that the new pose will be really more dynamic ;)
04-06-2004, 12:01 AM
Great stuff so far! No crits here. I am looking foreward to see your main character. Keep up the awesome work.
04-06-2004, 10:45 AM
Hi, was looking through the entries and yours caughty my eye. Very nice, had me looking for a while. I like the idea behind your project. I like the idea of advertising on her. LOL can't escape ads even in the future. Will definitely be watching for more updates.
04-08-2004, 08:06 PM
Looks like I'm not the only one who likes your work here!
However.. I'm not too sure about the green on the technician.. but I might change my mind when all the pieces are glueded together! :P
Keep it going !
04-13-2004, 04:30 AM
Just came across your work...Wow!!
Looks great.
nice work... I really like the helmet design.
SARKO (tm)... LOL
06-11-2004, 06:24 PM
Wooooh! Back from the deads!!
I was very busy the 2 last months with a comic project, I will post something about this projetcs in a few weeks...
But for the moment, let's complete the Electrochimere! I made a lot of tests of compositions and designs, but I wasn't satisfied at all with theses experimentations.
Only 2 days ago, I managed to create a sketch wich work very well in a big size.
So the final line art is near completion, I will post it tomorrow. For the moment, theses ones are just 2 concept sketches about design and final composition. The final drawing will have a lot more perspective... :-D
06-14-2004, 12:50 PM
Lineart, just the tech crew is missing...
06-14-2004, 10:17 PM
'Started colors... For the moment I'm just playing with flesh... :)
06-15-2004, 09:38 PM
Still going on... A bit confuse for the moment, but it will become more lisible with lights and smoke effects.
06-15-2004, 10:12 PM
Waoow ! Too much people on this contest.....:D ....i missed your thread...
It's a great work !
Textures are wonderfull ! Beauty !
I'd have the idea too of a centaurus...:) but your is great!
Composition is very impressive.
06-16-2004, 07:26 AM
nice dude ... I realy like it
06-16-2004, 12:09 PM
GO OOON!!! :buttrock: :buttrock:
06-16-2004, 01:16 PM
that is very nice, can i pick your brain and ask how you created those detailed textures on the skin, and rocks???
06-16-2004, 01:37 PM
wow nice textures and pose!! this is gonna be a very tough challenge to judge!!!
06-17-2004, 06:20 AM
I like the composition and your choice of colors. Nice painting style!
My Machineflesh Entry (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=149101)
06-18-2004, 01:13 AM
what I like most in this work is that you can feel the weight and the power of the creatuse :D
very very nice:thumbsup:
06-18-2004, 09:59 AM
Thanks guys for your replies! I will answer to all of you later, because I'm quite late ^_^
This one will be my final coloring if I have not the time to add the technicians. I want to change the face, too.
Ouch, 'will be hard!!
06-18-2004, 10:41 AM
yeah !! Ca depote bien maintenant !!!
Vite vite vite viiiite!! :buttrock:
06-18-2004, 11:45 AM
:surprised stunning work.....
06-18-2004, 12:06 PM
If you have some time left, you could maybe add just a hint of clouds or something? :) and i'm not sure about the darker frame around the pic, but maybe that's just me.. :)
Well, anyway the pic is just great and you did a good job!
Good luck!
06-18-2004, 12:22 PM
Really great creature!! I like it very much. Nice colors too. Also the skin is very good painted.
06-18-2004, 01:40 PM
Thanks again for all yours advices guys! I take note! Well, it will be hard to add clouds, I still have the technicians to do...
Update with the new face ('was hard, redone it 3 times...), new body, and some color/shadows tweakings. :)
06-18-2004, 02:11 PM
Fantastic job on the texturing....really nice piece.........good luck.
06-18-2004, 07:38 PM
I think it's complete! Didn't have the time to add the technicians, but the illustration works, I think, quite well like that.
Once again, thanks to everyone who supported my work, I will be back in a few days with a comic project! :)
Oh, yes, I will explain soon how I create those textures, but for the moment I'm tired, sorry ^_^
06-18-2004, 08:27 PM
Hum, just few tweakings, I think it's really final now ^_^
06-18-2004, 09:53 PM
Trying to find them tweakings?
Is it the coloring?
Anyways Beatyfull picture ....Both of them:)
06-19-2004, 12:30 AM
Yeah, looking great ! :buttrock:
The ornements on the gun are great, BTW, what does it shot ?
A triple polygonal ray, or a big ray from the middle ?
I really like the little stars in the clear sky  :D
May the Gob' be with you !
06-20-2004, 10:23 AM
It looks great! Congratulation!
06-20-2004, 06:51 PM
Pretty impressive. One of the better entries to me,got a chance at top 5 dude.good luck.
06-21-2004, 02:16 AM
WOW stunning work man  one of my favorite 2D entry. I really like the composition of your piece, colors and style everything is well done. I wish you the best
06-21-2004, 04:27 PM
Once again, thanks a lot guys! :) I will now try to answer some questions, as I've got more time now.
Vincent V->There is only few differences in the 2 final images, the more important is the eyes, she's now looking in the direction of the gun. Added the black frame, too.
Falk->The gun is a kind of railgun, firing uranium projectiles at high velocity by using magnetic acceleration. boom
About textures now: I mainly use metallic textures with high contrast, which I generally put in top of my layers stack. I use the layer mode "incrustation" and "lumière tamisée" in french, with photoshop. I very often link a luminosity/contrast layer for each of the textures layers. Well, after, it's only playing with the tablet on another layer, adding shadow or brightness, using color picking and painting brush.
I know some peoples may prefer painting everything by hand, but in fact, adding textures like that is really more confortable. It add a lot of informations that you can use easily for painting over. And of course, it's time saver :-)
++ and thanks as ever!! :)
06-21-2004, 05:22 PM
Wow she really turned out a hammer!, nice job.
06-21-2004, 08:30 PM
Excellent work! I would've liked to have caught this imagery up into my final image in the 3d category.
At very least I would suspewct this work gets published!
Great Job, no butt smoochin' intended!
06-21-2004, 09:10 PM
Just here to give compliments on another of my top 10.Wonderful.
06-21-2004, 09:37 PM
Love the colors Frid !!
But you have to "copyright" the "black frame", it's an excellent idea!!
Good luck old friend!
06-21-2004, 10:02 PM

07-13-2004, 10:38 AM
Thanks again everyone!!
I uploaded a more Hi Res version, with some mistakes corrected. Better compression too.
07-13-2004, 02:13 PM
Jawin commented in the beginning that you would need to give it an edge, and I believe you have done that. Good work, from start to finish. GREAT perspective, and I love your details that lead to a sort of story...as well as making it more life-like. NICE WORK!
07-13-2004, 02:18 PM
btw, thank you for describing how you did that. How interesting!
07-16-2004, 09:24 PM
Hop, voted ^^
I hope you win so I can try the Cintiq
