View Full Version : Small Weight shade TIP for Layout

Hi folks.

Here's just a very small tip that might come in handy some time:

I am just working on a scene where a weight map controls the specularity and bump on the object. And other objects are positioned in Layout according to the weight map's influence. The object with the weight map is static and rigid and requires no deformations.
So I needed to be able to see the weight map in Layout in order to position the other objects. After a couple of minutes thiking I just remembered that Layout has a weight shade mode for seeing bones' influences. So here's the tip I'd like to share:

- Add a bone (that will do nothing to the model in regards of deformation)

- Set it to use the weight map you want to see

- rest the bone and activate the bone weight shade mode

Now you'll see the weight map and can use it to position objects in relation to the weight map.

Ok. so this wasn't much hocus pocus, but hopefully it'll be of use for some of you some day.

Cool idea Pixelranger. Remember it's hocus pocus to those who don't know how you did it, so thanks for sharing! :applause:

A good tip, I'd never thought of using it in Layout.

I use similar in Modeler if I want to refine a weight map in Vertex Paint, especially models that don't have bones (VP doesn't display weight maps unless a bone is present and set to use the required map).
At first I didn't think VP wouldn't display weight maps that didn't originate in VP because it wouldn't list other maps. It turns out that you have to use skeligon tree to set up the skeligon/weight map relationship.
