These are sketches for the Tech Priest
character. The "mask" is in fact a visor
which is implanted into the skull of the
character.

some idea sketches. I called the left character "the librarian". He
is responsible for maintaining a data storage vault.
he is holding some sort of a cylindrical data cartridge.
he has been installed there for about 30 years and his remaining
organic parts are regularly replaced with cybernetic implants.

On the right there is the "Tech Priest". He is more of a religious person.
At a certain stage during his apprenticeship (is that a word?) in the order his lower torso is amputated. The lower torso
is replaced with a four-legged walking mechanism.
In additon, a visor "mask" is implanted into his skull.
(see head sketches in the previous post). The whole ordeal
is somewhat ritualized. I will come up with a name for this ritual later.
(something like "cleansing of the flesh".)

Hi Marc, very cool style. I like the librarian, he's really
"machinefleshed".

Keep on workin':bounce:

marcnail

thx for the comment.

I`m not sure which way to go.
Librarian or Tech Priest? I think I`ll develop
both further, and make a decision then.
;)

marc.

Saschi0815
03-22-2004, 04:57 PM
This is really a salomonic decision;)

.. but if u ask me: I prefer the librarian, 'cause he has more "evil" touch and his charisma is a lot of stronger than the other.

But I'm curious about your way to the final concept.

Wish u luck

marcnail

yeah, the librarian ("bibliothekar" in german), is really more my kind of creature. Maybe I`ll combine some aspects of the "tech priest" with the librarian. I like the techno-religious
flavour of the priest a lot.

allright.
after some thought overnight, I choose
the "librarian". I'm working on a
interesting pose, which also reflects
his somewhat arrogant/evil intellectual
personality. maybe a first color test
will follow later.

marcnail-- these are some well done concept sketches. I feel the Librarian is definately the better choice too.

Keep pushing it :D

damn, thats looking good.
What about that thing he´s holding. Is that a future form of book? or something like a harddrive?

marcnail
03-23-2004, 11:18 PM
yep, its a kind of cylindrical harddrive. I thought of some
sort of fluid gel- data storage.

this is a color test done
with the posing sketch. just
to make sure if I get the flesh tones
right. still not sure about the
pose though. need something more
sinister,bent forward, threatening.

Good Job

I pinned down the character.

before lineart and coloring.

there is a bit of environment
visible,some machines and tech
equipment, but nothing to divert
the attention from the character.

Its been some time since my last upload.
anyway,heres my lineart. I only made a
few background elements (machinery, cables)
as the final color-version will be quite dark with little background detail.

first steps:
-warm grey background
-grey color for the cyborgs body.

The color will be more flesh-like
in a later phase of the coloring
process. This is just for starters.

added some flesh color and rough
background. I made some highlights
for the flesh, to see what kind of
texture it should have (shiny/non shiny,
slimy etc.)

Thanks for the comments so far. merci!
I`m working on the details of the
muscles and machinery. The lighting is
a bit of an issue at the moment. The
character has so many details, that its
hard to figure out how the light "behaves" on his body.

04-23-2004, 06:44 PM
Looking very good. :)
Is there a purpose for the (data ? - )cylinders on his back, since they are very hard to reach for him ? Or are they there in order to put cables into them ?
You built a very nice "stage" for your charakter, which gives a nice feeling of depth and focus on the char. Coloring looks also very promising.

marcnail
04-23-2004, 07:59 PM
Well, the data cylinders on his back are pre-implanted, they
serve as an extra data storage system,or brain augmentation.

With his long primary arms, he could possibly pull them out
himself, but normally this is done by a service technician.

They are filled with some sort of fluid gel which serves as
a saving medium. This gel has to be checked by the
afromentioned service guy from time to time ,as this stuff
tends to deterioate after a certain period of time.

(Its no perfect technology, but in later versions they might
improve that design flaw) ;)

Argh , did it again , I read only the second page a while
back , and although excellently done , it was just the same
guy with the same pose . Just read it all ... and I'll be ...
the other skecthes and stories too were excellent :applause:

you planning on having something more than wires on the
background ? like data storage facility ? maybe older ,
written data (books n stuff) among the hitech stuff ?

how about some little machineflesh creatures to keep the
place clean ( of dust and rodents and what have you) ?

maybe add a visitor to the place in the pic ?

nevermind ,just suggestions , u doin fine

Sweet pic.
Very Cool

Have you ever played or had a look at Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000.

Have a look at www.gamesworkshop.com (http://www.gamesworkshop.com)

Just mentioned it because (and Im not acusing you of anything) your idea is very in with the system.

Its set in the Far future in a War torn universe. Mechanical flesh is everywhere as its herisy to have a machine that thinks. the Solution is to have Biological thinking parts graphted to machines.

They have Techpriests who are part of the adeptus mechanicus who worship the machine god they are the only people versed in the laws (and religion) of machines.
Every thing is ritulised.

Its a great game system and a great universe has been built around it, including some great novels and thousands of art pieces.

Anyway if you havent already have a look Im sure you will love it.

Back to your work.
I really love where this is going. One piece of feedback is have more "data" cylinders around him maybe a wall of them behind him or something. Or make even more of them on the floor.

Keep up the great work I will definatly have a look back here later and see ho it progresses.

hi !

since you asked for a full view,
here it is. I'm doing an overpaint
job right now. Its going almost
painfully slow at the moment, but
there's progress.

about the "warhammer 40k"-comparasion:
I'm aware of that universe, but there's
no direct connection to it. My influen-
ces come from alot of sources, like
franko-belgian comics and jap. anime/
manga. However, I try to keep away from
just carbon-copying stuff. True, most
ideas in the biomechanical department
have been explored before, but I think
theres still room for some more interes-
ting stuff like "the librarian".
;)

cheers,

aw crap, I don't have enough time
for this. have to hurry a bit.

anyway, I gave the "librarian" a
more demonic red lighting, looks nice
so far.

I`m experimenting with colored lights
right now. Hmm..the "red laser look"
is a bit tired..what do you think?

not sure.

Looking Great.

The red lighting is nice and demonic.
Makes the character look more evil

Love the lighting in general and the display screens very nice
coming along very nicely

only crit is it looks like the cables coming out of the floor and the hole he is in are getting washed out by the steam, maybe make it more transparent? But it is awesome!

marcnail
05-03-2004, 06:43 PM
yeah, thats what I thought myself. The image is getting too
"fuzzy" with all that steam and stuff.

I have to clean that up and put some emphasis on the character.

I'm working on the details now, maybe adding one
or two things. The hoses/cables will be clearer and
less sketchy.

I reduced the red lights and reflections
a bit and cleaned up the image to a
certain degree.

I also added some details to the base
and continue to refine the look.

Allright, this is (as far as I`m concerned) my "Final Coloring".

The "Librarian" awaits you.
I tried to give the whole scenery
a kinda cinematic look, as if it
was a snapshot of a very spooky

thats a funny thought. stealing data cylinders perhaps.
but he's a "librarian". Stealing from his own workspace?

could make a good story.;)
