Hi All... this is a rough out of my entry... im currently messing around with ideas.. i want to go into ultra fine detail... seing how i can combine
robotics into an iris ... cheers
OK.... hi all... my entry is of a govenment assasin.. called op12
his enhancements are.... a harddrive unit and new left eye optics(eg Camera).... working as an assasin for many years.. he was
given the Opportunity to have certain enhancements augmented into his body... one of those enhancments was a harddrive unit.
the reason he opted to have this enhancment was to enable him to down load mission objectives on the fly (eg maps.schematics & other intergrated systems) also linked to his left eye optics...
He also opted for a new left eye... this gives him an X1000 zoom function.... also once linked to his harddrive unit the use of filters come into play (eg infered vison.target locking)....
the medical procedure he went through to get these where a military first... scientists had to come up with a way to compress his brain size buy half whilst keeping all functionality.. after compressing the brain they then sliced they left hemisphere of his
skull off and added a new metal bay in its place.... then a harddive was fashined to look like the left side of his skull.. once his missions are completed the harddrives are destroyed....
The procedure the scientists used to add the camera eye where as follows... his left eye was removed.. new precision lazers where used to slice out the iris and pupil with out damageing nerve endings and then the camera was added and his eye reconsituted back in to his head......
the concepts for this are on the fifth post....
i had to get them scanned

here is another rough model... im focasing the image in this area... i also have some other ideas for the pupil similar to a camera zoom ... still need to upload my pencils... the scanners on the blink...

OK... hi all...
ive started to model the eye...based on my concept & early model roughs. im happy with the look i have.but i still want to add more cabling to the iris area... And more fine detail like little screws everywhere...

it's very very Interesting the graphism suggested by the modeling around the pupil.
i think it's a pity that we does not see any more the retina with the element in the shape of rotor of turbo engine.
The modeling is very clean.

Hi all.. here is a front on preview rend
im at a stalemate here now.. im thinking
about remodelling the iris area.. having
cable come across the front of the eye then dip down into the pupil the space inbetween the pipe would be filled with some sort of clear fluid.. i will do some test tomorrow to see if it works..
although i will continue on with what i have at the moment ... cheers

think?

i would put a diaphragm like cameras have.
Perhaps the way that iris is going out
seems to much "telescopistic" perhaps
you should use Nano mechanism with microgears.
Look at that websiteParadise:
i'm very astonished than nobody worked on a concept with MEMS....
however it is a hudge subject of inspiration

Nice modelling, very clean and neat!
But remember the whole contest idea, don't go to details too soon. I would suggest you design the whole man first, then go to details. That way you can maintain the same style and detail for the whole character.
I would really like to see pics of the head compartment. Maybe drawings of the head how it would look like...
But nice job, looking forward to see the next milestone!:buttrock:

here is the other iris model test i promised... the cables can move via
a catipiller motor system... to dailate the pupil
this is only a test to see other posibilites... all crits welcome what do you guys think 1st or 2nd :)
i will also post a pick of the cables cross sectioned

hi again... here is the concept of how the cables move... in the cross section
you can see the catipiller motor system
they move up and down the cable to contract and retact the iris ....
i still think i prefer the original iris?

Great modelling but are you going to be able to see this much detail in the final render? I suppose if your doing a portrait syle close up.
Anyway I dont meant to criticise, I'm sure you know what your doing. Your really going to town on the details which is very impressive and I cant wait to see more of the character in this level of detail.
I love the detail you are modelling my hat is off to you,but as ionized has said maybe you don't need the inner workings of the cables as they won't be visible, but maybe you are doing that just to show how the eye parts will move?
Anyway if you think you need all that detail then go for it after all god is in the detail.

Hi Ionized & Jud
yeah... i made the cable cross section model just to show how the iris works. The final model wont have the inner workings ....although it would be great to be able to keep it :)

Perhaps using transparents polymers,
used in mems building, you could show mechanism.... mhhh ? what do you think ?

Oh hey, I didn't notice you were from oz! Good to see some australian talent in this comp!! Cos as everyone knows, we are the best... hehe... oi oi oi!!
I'm actually not at Micro Forte anymore. I probably shouldn't say too much since MF havn't made any "official" statement, but the team that was working on Citizen Zero had to be let go. Its a damn shame, cos it was going pretty well for a while. I dunno, that game has had the worst run of luck
Anyway, I'm working at Perception now on the Stargate liscence. Pretty cool stuff =) So hows Atari? You working on that Transformers game?

The modeling is really incredible.
Which ever eye you choose you should make sure that there is some technical way to sense light. You may want to consider pulling small nodes rinning down the surface of the wires to gather light like the cells in a real eye. I would also be neet to intergrate some of the different aspects of the eye. Check out some of the scientific studies of how the eye works and maybe you can play with different ideas like a small group of large sensors for color and then a large group of small basic black and white sensors. You could also add a small blind spot were the wires of the eye go back to the optical sensors in the brain.
Really cool stuff.

DAAAAAAAAMMNNN!!!!! You have the meanest modelling skills!!! As many of the other people inhere, I'm worried that you might not see as much detail on the final render... But by looking at how fast you can change something, I guess you'll have plenty of time to go into details!!!
Looking very much forward to upcomming changes!!!
Keep it up, mate!!!

Hey there Keith,
I appreciated the feedback on my thread. I thought I would do you the same courteousy! I seriously enjoyed looking at the evolution of detail that went into one iris.
It looks like you take on a slightly different approach to modeling than I do. Personally I model like I sketch with charcoal, meaning I rough out the form of my model in basic shapes, and slowly work my way into the model, putting in details as the time calls for them. The model detail always looks balanced because I make sure everything IS in fact equal in detail before I move on.
Keith, it looks like this is going to be a fantastic model in it's completed form. All the more reason to warn you ahead of time and ENSURE it's success, risking my repeating of something you probably already know: Don't concentrate in one given area for too long. Make sure everything else cathches up to that fantastic iris you made. Too many times have I seen people get excited about a part they made, and almost automatically forget about the rest of the model. Good detail on one small part of a bland model = bad model.
I have a strong feeling you already knew that. So far, this was my only word of advice I have to offer at the moment. I certainly want to keep track of your progress. Just the thought of the potential you've shown in merely the eyeball of your character gives me the willies! Take care, Keith. I'll check your work out again soon. Thank's for writing on my entry.

Hi James... I really appreciate your thoughts......
Your right about roughing out the model first and then going back and refining the elements... In my job this is the structure i work to.... Not doing any high poly modelling for almost 3 years now...
i decided to enter this challenge .... more so to challenge myself
and meet other artists like myself ... and in the last two week ive seen some really excellent work.. by old and young artists......
anyways.. My plan was to rough out my whole model first.
but as soon as i started to play around with the eye i got ahead
of myself and next thing i had whats on my thread .hehehe...
james thanks for bringing me back down to earth man...
PS.... your model is lookin sweet.....

nice tight work ya got going here .. don't understand how we're gonna see the cable but all in time i guess
fab work .. fun to watch
ParadiseFlyBird
03-29-2004, 09:32 AM
thanks for comment pigwater... im still thinking which eye i want to use in my character... but i leaning to wards the second eye...
im thinking on making the cabling transparent so you can see the underlining detail... but if this work out to be over 500,000 poly im gona have to go with opaque cables...
harnelbe
03-29-2004, 09:48 AM
500,000 !
:|
You didn't used Lofts or something else?
I would be a pity if those cable became opaque
I want them transparent :scream:
edit
The number of poly will depend in the
close-up or not of your eye.
If you consider to modeling only the head
that is justified.
But if in made final the object is not very visible, I think that it is to better concentrate on other details.
ParadiseFlyBird
03-29-2004, 09:53 AM
hehehe... hey harnelbe.... yeah what the heck i only need 1 render dont i ... i will model them and make a layer group then hide them till render time .... cheers
harnelbe
03-29-2004, 10:07 AM
:)
lol
your layer solution which seems to be a good one
Don't you think it will be a good solution for my final render ?
Sorry if i bad explain i would just like to
suggest to optimise the modeling regarding wat is displayed in the final render.
I began to model some things to overheat me, and i noticed it is very trying to add
detail progressively:) even if in fact details
are seen only at the time of closed-up.

Thanks 4 the complimens. Ur design skills are impecable. the first eye looks more cybernetic, which makes it more preferred. you can add hexagonal solar panels to work as photosensitive iris, 4 the 2nd eye. the work is awosome.

hi, nice modeling so far, i think ell the edges must be smoothed, i think the character looks so rigid yet, the lines on the lips should be more rounded i think, the nose looks well but the tip con be more spherical, just a bit;) , sorry maybe your character is designed to be rigid, if so just ignore me please, other way theres my opinion hope it helps a little bit:thumbsup:

The progress on this is amazing. Are you using any reference pics?

Hey PFBird,
Wow, your really making some progress here. For the love of god, slow down so the rest of us can have a chance =)
The head is looking really good. Its still quite stylised which I like.
The area around the eyes is pretty good, although the transition from the cheek ino the eye socket might be a little harsh.
The eyebrows and lips are very strong which I also think it pretty cool, although I think the area around the sides of the mouth could do with some more fat.
Looking great man, cant wait to see this hard drive unit!

hi, not sure of this, but i feel the eyes are a bit big, maybe u have to make them smaller and adjust the face mesh so it fits better to the round shape of the eyes, as i told u is just a bit, thats why im not too sure, but if u can make a proof and it help it would be great. your head modeling is going really well, about the jaw i found interesting the hard edge shape, it looks cool on the character, ok thats all by now, ill wait your updates man!, oohhh, and i wanted to mention that the eyes modeling its amazing, great work on that:thumbsup:

RattleSnake thanks for your C&C..... at the moment ive been going thru so much reference... especially models done by square.
and when i have a look at eye referene the iris usually takes up alot of room in refence to the eye socket..... your right about the roundness of the eye lids though i willl tweek them to be more in tune to the eye ball.... cheers man.. when i started this challenge i wanted to do something that had never been done before in reference to modelling the eye ... i had never seen a modelled eye ever.... i dont know if im pushing the envelope though....

Hey Keith!
This is a fantastic process.
I agree with Supersnake about the eyes, maybe its cuz of the lack of lids at the actual level of detail. Once added, the'll solve this. The Noseholes (the bridge) and the ears need need a bit more definition and tweaking of the mass too.
The Head is looking great, I like the Style a lot. I'll keep my eyes on this... hehe, rock on mate, keep em updates coming! :buttrock:

hey, great model, good concept.
A few things you could work on(sure you know about them already) the ear needs some work, lacking proper shape. It also needs to be moved, it's too far back, and too far up. I can see you didn't line it up with the eye, Go look in the mirror, you'll see the top of the ear lobe should be relatively in line with your eyes, or brow.
The bottom lip looks a little flat as well. Other than that, looks good

Tgoodes : thanks for the C&C ....as this being my first head model there are somethings that i am unsure about. i have been looking at heaps of reference... in the last pic i posted the left view of the head is a camera render its not a completely side on shot thats why you get the illusion that the ear is to far back... hopefully today i'll get sometime to work on remodelling the ear... cheers pfb

No crit from me,man!any chance of seeing a wireframe of that there puppy,I would like to see how you managed to work in those connectors, are they made from the mesh of the head or are they seperate pieces you modelled first then just placed them in the right position,or what....?
Anyway it looks sweet, and I love the how his facial features look almost chiselled as if crafted from some ancient material unknown to man...!
Are you going to keep the head open or are you going to incase the hard drive area in something transparent?

A long moment i didn't put my eyes there, you are on a good way
You could put reenforcements in your brain structure like you drawn in your sketche concept(upper right of the sketche), i remember i had found it very interesting in the detailing of the inside, like industrial molding.

Hey ParadiseFlyBird
I like the sharp edgey style you got going on. i think you could work on the ear alittle bit more. Seems kind of flat looking to me.
Also the head gear kind of makes me think of an outside of a computer rather than an inside. Needs more stuff like circuits, wires motherboards, stuff like that. Ionized idea of a 60's computer is a good one too.

My take...................I like him......Forget about the machine flesh issue for a moment, well beyond this......I like his look, the square jaw,the stylized look is cool, tough, but he still looks noble in his own way..............I mean 90% machine,10% flesh,or 90% flesh, and 10% machine......What's important to me is the overall look and feel.We will all get the machine flesh combo in our own way.................But I look at this even beyond the challenge..............This piece can be shown in different angles and forms after the challenge...............There will be more ways of showing off this creation later than just the "Final Shot"........:)
Nice details, nice inside the head and nice outside...............Either way there is some very nice work here,I like him in all modes.keep up the nice attention to details keith, and keep him looking cool and stylized, you got a nice piece of work here............

Does the final image have to be a single scene. I mean you could treat your final image as a technical diagram of this guys implants. Do picture within pictures. Divide it up, show closeups of the eye, do a cutaway of his hard drive brain, show transparent components... I mean, you don't have to go with just a shot of your guy in some sort of dynamic pose...
More like a product brochure than a scene...Just a thought.

3 new ideas to solve the multi-images scene:
1- The man is repairing something in his head in front of a multi angle mirror... (A little like terminator scene in which he takes his eye out but with more mirrors in more angles)
2- A spy is watching some screens portraying our machineflesh character...
3- In a old fashioned house, pictures of him in every corner, maybe before and after the implants... Maybe with a tragic end, maybe with a girl crying in foreground (out of focus)...

Nice to see the torso join the head Keith............I think you do not have to go over board with too much machine flesh intergration on the torso,in some cases it's called for I quess...........But in this case I see your character as a more stylized one, more fluent,flowing........Perhaps hint's of machine meets flesh.........Either way your creation here is coming out real well, keep going in this direction, nice effort and results thus far....................

Try and give him a more natural expression, I'm assuming you're not going to rig the face, so there is no need for a bored/blank stare look. Lower his top eyelids, maybe tense his eyebrows inward.
Why is everyone so scared of clothes?

Hey fly bird,
That head looks really cool man, he looks pretty psychotic but I guess that happens when you replace half your brain with a computer =) Good modelling so far and I'm sure the body will look just as cool when your finished with him.
Atari keeping you busy eh? No sweat, we still got over a month on this thing... put your feet up, relax etc...

Hey Keith, glad your back. Hope your ready to do some damage cos you got some catching up to do man!! =)
I think he would look cool with some sort of tatoo or implant on his face. Maybe something like seven of nines ocular implant. Just something to break up the skin texture on his face a bit
And try using shadow/light and fresnel falloff maps for the skin... Its a quick way to soften the surface up.
PS: I saw transformers on the shelf the other day:thumbsup:

Great work you have done on that tread  I think you can still make it man maybe if you do a head render with some close up on the mechanical eyes and on the brain sections with some descriptions, like if it was a military magazing or something like that (I hope my sentence make sense my english is not so good) I think that could be a solution...
Anyway I will be looking foward for your work mate. Keep the good work comming man and cya soon :wavey:

Yes, time can certainly get away from you in these challenges.
It has the potential to be a great piece, so even if you dont get it finished, you must keep working on it afterwards!
It's been great fun... keep going till the deadline anyway Keith.
