i been modeling this character for a personal project i'm working on and i started out modeled his body etc then i clothed him etc now i was just wondering if its normal practice to delete the body mesh where its hidden by clothes - to me it seems like it would save problems where the body and the clothes might pass through each other and reduce the polys in the scene all at once

but anyway i see all these tutorials on creating characters etc but it never mentions if you should delete the covered parts after you've got the shape for the clothing done

so what should i do kill them or keep them?

Id say for any type of cloth simulation you need to keep it other then that its up to you, but why delete something that you spent time building? Id leave all the parts there so you dont lose the correct form when working with the clothing.

I definitely wouldn't delete it. Just save out a version with the body in case you ever want to show the character without his shirt or something.

Yes, definately delete that body. There's no point wasting clock cycles rendering something that you'll never see.

Obviously, don't waste your work, just save out another model file with the mesh you'll be deleting in your current one.

If you need a body for the purpose of collision, a low poly object is better anyway.

I'd go further and say don't bother building the body at all. Why waste time on what you never intend your audience to see? Concentrate your time on the details that will be visible. Sure if you need help with proportions, just stick in a few boxes to approximate the body. Or if you plan to animate with cloth, a low rez collision proxy would sure be useful. But if you don't feel you need either of those things, then don't bother.

Keep the body but make a copy and either delete the polys you wont need our make the unseen parts transparent or use a clip map.

yeah i hadn't planned on deleting teh mesh and keeping no version of it with the body intact i think for now i will go with deleting the actual polys seems less work than using a clip map etc

It probably is less work. One thing you need to be careful of are situations where you may see up the sleeve of a character or down the neck etc. If you have have enough polys you could see thru those areas.
