hi, my name is sascha henrichs. and i'm working as a gamedeveloper in germany.

i just wanted to participate in this great contest.
and only log in at he moment. because i'm terribly ill...
i got some idea for a scene not in the very far future. 2020.
only in short: the scene contains a grandma in some U.S. suburbs cooking. it shows her in her kitchen and from behind.

she got some artificial legs and hips beginning from her waist and controlled by her brain, through a direct biomechanical connection to it..
the scene should show a possible future of medical improvement in the field of artificial limbs.
it should look abit terrifying but should also be sort of funny. because some grandma controls such heavy mechanical/electronic device, and she will never ever understand how this high tech device is really functioning..
also it is a contrast of very powerful energy and the weakness of the old.

i got not much time for it, because i have got some heavy work to do at the moment, and also got family. so i wish to get statisfying result only with short time to work for this.

i wish all other challengers good luck!

This is a small sketch of the setting i choose.
it should be a small kitchen part in some U.S. suburbs house.
the grandma with artificial limbs will be submitted later.

This concept shows a rough mechanic structure and overall look of the artificial body part.

it may be used for people who are paralyzed down one part of the body, or somewhat. also it is a replacement for people who have heavy atrophy of the bones or were victims of war.

this setting is placed in a not so bad future, where the medical aid is affordable by everyone, and even those complicated machines are built in factories, financed by government and big surgical insitutions. the machine is directly built into the patient ex works.

they are given to everyone who is in need of this. because money is no more a problem in this better future.
and people are good to each other..

....err..

isnt it sweet ;)

Hi Namensvetter:beer: ,

I like your concept, and it recollects me to a film called "The Arrival".
Lookin' forward to see the 3D Stuff.

Germany rocks :buttrock: :applause: :wip:

hi sascha :),
here, have a drink for doing the first comment on my thread  :)
thx

btw. what is the connection to "the arrival" is there a robot also?
i searched for some screenshots, but just found charly sheen and some aliens :)

thx

Yes , it's with Charlie ... and the aliens have the same form and function of legs like yours, but organic. They can jump 6m with them, hehe!

So - no panic- u are on the right way;)

btw: thx for your comment, I know that most of the people here show some scifi-artwork. But I like the paradox between modern imaginations (cyborg, cybernetic parts etc.) and the technic of the middleage.:buttrock:

...and thx for the drink- now i'm drunk- hicks:hmm: :p

here i'm starting the face of the woman..
i also got some tests for the machine parts. they will follow..

perhaps someone can give some feedback about the idea itself...currently i'm a bit confused if i take a whole new concept. because i got some other idea.
i'll give it a try.. in a short render or sketch i think.

but please tell me if the current idea is interesting enough.

thx

this is a part of the legs...tomorrow i'll post some detailrenderings

this is a next version of the legs.

for explanation of the modeling technique i used, i'll post the simple mesh, and the subdivided version of this.

so its normal polygonmodeling what i use.

the link joint (or inverted knee) is NOT ready for now. i want to give it some more detail.

another renderview of it.

unfortunately you won't see very much of it, in the entire scene, since it is mostly covered by.....the cover :)
as you can see in the other pics

ok another picture of the leg, now rendered.

i made a break, modeling the face, since it is more interesting for me, to model the machine parts.
but i have to come back to this soon.

over all i have to say, that this will be my very first character to model! no joke.

at work i'm only into environment and architecture modeling.

so i also got no skills in rendering, post processing, lighting and all that. but it is a real enrichment for me, that i have to go into all these different fields.
its very much fun!

ok i think i'll stay with this idea, since i really put some modeling into it for now.

but i think i'll do some small tweaks on the shape and the proportions of the legs, since i found the upper part a bit too uniform, and the lower part a bit of bad shaped.

anyway, the impression of being a medical device should be preserved, by leaving the plastic coverings on it.
this keeps me away of doing a nice overall detailed look, wich is not so good, but for the meaning of the picture it is better.

big feet are missing for now, they will give the machine better proportions. i'll go on modeling on monday.
till then i'm looking foward for any comments.

thx
sascha

Hey sascha, the machine part of the modelling looks great. It has lots of detail. I want to see how the face turns out, but it has a good start so far.

aphexx
04-03-2004, 09:16 PM
thank you psychon,
in fakt i have no idea how to model and map a character  , currently i'm doing tutorials for getting into it :)
the face is the first face i ever made ...err

but i hope i can get it, since i'm involved into normal modeling for a long time now.
i only hope to get it somehow look natural...
but well this is more a rendering skill but a modeling skill.
good render artists are able to make a polyscrapheap look natural i think :)

anyway, please tell me, what do you think about the idea itself?
is it too flat? or boring?

nearly the same perspective, but some other contrasts..
i wnated to hold this back, for not to post the same content...but i think the "colors" are ´some better in this rendering

Hi Sascha! It's coming along nicely! I really like the idea of making the mechanical thing in a way that it actually could be used in. You could say that it's less SF and more "future" I guess. Very nice indeed.

I don't know what the final composition will look like but if you want to develope the concept a little, you could try to add special features to the mechanical device. Stuff like things that can help her to cook, or clean, maybe a telephone or something like that.

Great concept!

Hi Sacha

Thanks for your reply.

Mayby it looks now like a sandman from the movie dune, but thats not the part.

He are a Wizard and to make him life a little bit better hi cut his legs and make some turbine into his robe. With this hi can fly.

keep on rocking and best look:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

Hey Sascha, shot for the post dude...

I really like your idea cause i think old school is cool so if someone can help the old folks then u b it.
Mygranhad some problems with her hip and ankle and i think your bio-mech limbs would make her look cool.

I really like like your joints nice detail.:applause:

Anyway ... all the best and once again thanx for the help on Arsekak. Oh and he eats boontjie sop for the sick stomach acid.

@yoom
when i'm finished with my idea, you can send your grans to me...i'll fix them then.

:)
thx for roses...now i have to make some break in contest modeling, since i spend my working time on this recently...
now work is also important..

Hi again Sascha,

I love your progress in details for the leg.
..details are the most timewastin' stuff- I know that:rolleyes:

Hope to see more of your development soon..

One question: Will there be some veins + strains on the skin?
Or is the skin only a kind of coating? Could be great if the skin's full functional for his life...

Keep up your good work.:bounce:

Hi Sacha it's comming well! great level of details, I like the idea  I agree with Say so Long maybe in your final environment you could put some new 2020 weird kitchen stuff like automatic cleaner or virtual 3D menu... :)

Keep it up!! looks good

Nice detailed modelling on the arm. Its very subtle and a good contrast to some of the more horrific entries we've seen so far!

Nice work so far, though I'd like to see more sketches or ideas to how you envision the final outcome.

thx to all

@ saschi
thx for the comment and suggestion!
the cover of the machine should be a hightech plastic or carbon like material. i do this, in order to stay closer to realism.

i got some insiration for my concept from chris cunninghams video for björk's "all is full of love".
see these pics :
pic 1 (http://www.director-file.com/cunningham/5211.jpg)
pic 2 (http://www.director-file.com/cunningham/5213.jpg)
pic 3 (http://architettura.supereva.it/sopralluoghi/20030331/09.jpg)

hmm, flesh could have some value, when imitating real limbs, but since my concept lacks of trying to look like real limbs, this disposes the matter

anyway, thanks for the suggestion!

@cygnus
thx, and perhaps you are right, i'll try something like this, as soon i'll start modeling the kitchen. perhaps there'll be also some concept art before starting modeling this.

@ionized
yes u are right. i just got no time for a nice concept sketch, since i'm not so good in drawing..damn  but i want to do this!
expect some more of this in some days..

thx again too all commentators! i hope i can soon carry on.

ha ha!! Me too. I just downloaded the clip the other day. It's such an amazing clip and very inspirational. It's almost like you dont need any flesh when you have machines as clean and pristine as that...

Great minds think alike =)

Hallo Namensvetter :scream:

The concept is fantastic and your modeling skills are great! I like the idea with the old woman a lot, it also takes up a not easy to deal with topic, its extraordinary and very cool to see that.
You are modeling on a very high level of details, this makes it very great to watch, cuz there's always something new to discover. Looking forward to your progress, and wish you best luck and loadsa fun!

Keep on rockin' and make me go wow  :buttrock:

@ all:
thx for comments and thx for pushig...it shows me that you are really interested in this thing :)

So finally i had some time for drawing a small sketch of the scene.

i think in the end i will design some more future style kitchen furniture..with round shapes.
also i'm thinkin about those "weird future kitchen stuff"..but i don't want the scene to look to much scifi, since it should have a realistic look.

currently i'm modeling the feet....it's very hard to invent a working mechanism... but i have some good reference material of real robot feet.

anyway i'm not sure if it is necessary to be such accurate...well i'll see..
but for now i have a little break..

Hi Sascha :) I like your new sketch we clearly see were you are going. Perhaps you are right, don't put to much sci-fi around, anyway grandma's dont like much futuristic stuff they like it the good old way;)

Keep going

Looking cool.
Yeah the new concept sketch really shows where you are going with it.

The modeling work is really looking good.

maybe have the feet in a sort of + configuration or as a long (foot) with a stabalising toe or dew claw out the back.

Anyway its looking great.

I would also not put in tomany Sci-Fi looking kitchen apparatus. Tech it up a bit but dont go to overboard. as Cygnus_X said "grandma's dont like much futuristic stuff they like it the good old way"
