Just messing about with idea of mechanical slaves, 30 min concept sketch, any feedback or ideas would be great. I'm not sure if I'll give him legs, making humans into drones, perhaps some radio control. Anyways, just throwing around some ideas.

Hey man, looks great...I like him without legs. It would be cool if flying was his only form of transportation. I seem to see some kind of mechanical protrusion where his legs should be...I like that. Keep it up.

much much more interesting and suggesting your first concept. I really encourage you to follow that way. Not only the atmosphere, but also the layout are promising!

Well, this is just a bit of an enhancement on the first, I'm imagining thousands of these guy being manufactured, legs aren't needed, as they are not as fast and effective as flying, so it has been replaced with a tail/extended spine. I agree with you hdri, I'll probably go down that path, this will just give me more or an idea on what the charactor will look like.

Well, this is a quick colour of the previous sketch. Any feedback on what you guys think would be great, do you like/dislike the concept, or the drawings? (I guess I'm in need of critique) Thanks.

Well, I'm throwing around another concept which is, imagine if humans(or alien) eventually evolved into pure energy, what would they use for physical form? take bits from here and there, pre-made machinery etc. Just another idea, I'm still trying to find a strong concept..... arrrg.

This is a picture of the first charactor in context, doing what is was manufactured for, numbing, maybe killing, the victim, and bringing them back to be assimilated.

Ok, I have decided to change concept, I think.
Imagine, everyone knows the evolution theories up to now, but what of to come, what will happen, what will humans evolve into? We are at the stage where technology is external, but in years to come (and even now Kevin Warwick has implanted himself with "cyborg technology" http://edition.cnn.com/2002/TECH/science/03/22/human.cyborg/) technology will be turned around, internal.
In this picture, I am suggesting a (perhaps) fictional evolution. A war, ok, not a war, The War, the end, man has almost wiped himself out, through mindless arguments, disagreements, pettiness. It was bound to happen. But not all died, there are always survivors, they are weak but they are alive, radiation bio waste, is in the air. They cannot breath in the open, without help, so once again technology is called upon. Through the years, humans gather themselves up again, developing technology that will allow them to breath, filters connecting straight into their bodies. The face needs to be shielded; enhancements are made to the body to make people stronger, faster, more effective, due to the lack of manpower. Telecommunication is inside at this stage, nutrition’s and foods are all put straight into the body through the mechanics on the back, as food is scarce, it must be rationed. Mouths slowly become obsolete, noses grow smaller, eyes widen. The race starts to rebuild itself.
Mistakes on the scale of The War aren't repeated, the survivors learn, co-operation becomes the bases for life, since the war people had to work hand in hand to stay alive. Telekinesis, and control over radio waves stared to evolve, senses untapped stared to become exploited, the race once again started to prosper. The human body is weak, it became disregarded, what do you need to be individual? Your personality. Bodies became obsolete as only vital organs were needed, the rest of your physic, could be, or needed to be synthetic. Humans could now started to populate other planets, as humans learned how to survive on a desolate planet they called earth.
The came the next, and perhaps final evolutionary leap, humans evolved further. The whole spectrum of waves, telekinesis, energy and form has been experimented with, over thousands of year, things have been realised that we now would think of as Godly. Humans at this point have perhaps reached a higher level, a higher life form, able to give up the physical form, float freely limits are broken, they are collective but they are individual. They are energy, or perhaps, soul.

Well, thats the idea, I will work on the concept as well as the illustrations as I go along. Any feedback would be great, (I'm not a very good storyteller, sorry, but I'll work on it.) This will also only be part of a bigger sketch, like 1/3 will be the darwin like evolution, and at the bottom will be a scenic picture of the energy. I've got an idea in my head, it's hard to explain, but I'll post some on it later. :)

Funny, i had an idea about the theory of evolution, with the almost same composition. I wanted to use it at the beginning for the 3D contest, but i decided that finally not, because of the large image that subject require.

I'm curious to see how you will make it living !

ho, and i really like your sketching and coloring style !! great !

Good luck

That's a great picture, I found it on the internet also while looking up pictures for evolution, The one I found said "evolution, Or is it?"
As for the composition of this, I'm planning this to be one part of the picture, kinda running along near the top, with a landscape of a desolate planet (maybe) and energy forms coming from this point. Hmmmm, I don't think I explained that very well, I'll do a sketch, and show you my idea for it, I think I need to clear it up in my head to.

Ok, well this is what I mean, something along these lines. The idea is that there is nothing left, humans interact as little as possible with planet, and so set up these focus points/cities (in a way) the overlaying of the evolution picture will be like this but hopefully in much more creative way, but something along these lines :) Can everyone understand my story?

I love this idea. the way the human falls and another form of life emerges. I would be carefull if I was you because you're stepping away from the regulations a bit by wanting to incorporate a scene (a kick-ass background). The concept is brilliant and i know its been thaught of time and again before cause I'v seen it, but I'm all for it because it would be your interpretation. I would concentrate on the strip only. meaning: You have 9 characters to design first, then to paint, and to add an enviroment might be too much. Hey maybe not. That is just my take on it. Anyways what ever you do I know It will be a great piece of art. rock on friend!

Here is another in progress sketch, of one of the mutations/affects on humans.

Thanks for the words crazybread, I'm hoping my concept isn't going to far from the regulations though, so I may have to re-think it, I've e-mailed an admistrator so hopefully I'll get some reply. Or can I ask somewhere? (is there a forum I missed, the faq is questions about the compition, not personal entries isn't it?) I'm wondering am I going away from the rules where there must be a specific charactor? at a specific time? (instead of a progression of a race over time) And is electrial is a going to far from mechanical? I may have to re-think again..... not sure. errrrrk any suggestions?

Another concept, maybe to bring it back into more mechanical, just throwing around loads of ideas, I guess we got the time :) The machine is assimilating itself into the human body, it needs it's energy to feed on to grow, to take control.

Just expanading on the charactor. I'm thinking of only shading half of this, and on the other side doing a sort of schematic drawing, showing how the mechanical parts go through and interact with the body. (may make one side green like a x-ray not sure.) Since this is only the charactor designing part. For the final image I'm going to take this charactor (and others I was working on I think) and put them in a situation. with alot more atmosphere, a nice perspective, not sure yet. I'm also working on the story to connect most of the stuff I have done, I'll post more on the story later. Check out the full view to see details! (mmmm details.)

I've decided to do and x-ray type picture for the charactor design, so you can see what's going on inside his body. I think I will change the blending though, so the x-ray kinda merges into flesh. Any ideas, suggestions?

I'm putting my charactor into the environment he comes from, I'm working on the story to this, sort of a narrative, and I am going to montage 4 other pictures I am doing (the skeletal x-ray being one) onto the right hand side (still working on the composition), to tell his story.

 Absolutely fantastic!!! Hey sir, you're one of the best, I'm sure!!! It's great to see such good artwork!!

I'm a beginner in the 2D Digital art stuff but anyway I wanted to try my first challenge to see if I'm really prepared. But looking such marvellous art I'm sure my participation is useless!!! Well, at least I can improve my level of drawing I guess.

I would like to know how you get those shadow effects on your drawings only using a pencil. What kind of technique do you use to have such a nice sketch in just 30 min? I can't believe that just with a pencil and 30 min yr art gets so good!!!

Please I just wanted to learn, but if you don't feel like answering my questions I'll understand. I just had to ask you this because I really deserve one thing in life right now: [B]to draw and make art like you!!!!![B] :bounce:

Ok, this is what I'm aiming at, as roughly the overall composition, I'm just hoping I'm not going to make it to busy. I'm going to try tell the story of the charactor through the image, the backround is the environment, in the top part, you will see one of these guys hanging upsidedown like a bat,(I want to try siluette him hanging, so may have to change the lightsource.) and in the bottom part the process/operation is taking place on the wall. The environment will have colour, while the x-ray won't, I'll leave it black and white, and the top and bottom parts will run over the backround picture. I'll work with this composition for a while, but I may end up changing it completely I'm not too sure. I'm going to try a narrative on this picture (starting to finalise the story in my head, I should probably write it down), not entirely to sure how that is going to work, I may put one or two words on the picture.

wings on the first pic ....go for the first concept!- as a rip out.......

Been looking at your thread, but wanted to enter in a comment. I really like your art and ideas. I'm not sure where you're going with it. I think the collage/storybard look is good but I think your earlier concept with him in a scene holds stronger. I kind of agree with CloneOps. Great exploration though into your ideas.

AlexKaiser

RVG, For the pencil sketching, I just add a bit more contrast, establish the lightsource and shade in the values, using hatching and crosshatching you can build up a deep shade very fast, quick sucessive strokes in one direction. Depending on the paper you can hide the brushstrokes with a little tortillion, or by just continuous working up of the pencil shades. (I've just grown quite fond of bristol board, no texture, but I usually use heavy weight cartridge paper as sketchbook to carry around) Feel free to ask me any more questions if you want (I'm not sure if I answered your question correctly.)

Sypherr, thanks, I was looking at the multiple backdrop idea at first with the evolution idea, I want to somehow try convey a story through the picture might be a way to subtly storyboard it maybe.

Pinokeo, I actually never was intending to have biblical ideas in it but I can see how many people could interpret that. (At one point Picasso's "Christ" charcoal picture was in my head when I had the idea for his head to droop down,a great picture I like the intense contrast in it, but along with many other pictures. It was still never my intention to have it religious)

Cloneops, Squibbet and Haven, Thanks for the suggestions, I think you are probably right, I may take it a bit back to the first concept again, the idea of the bottom section of the montage type picture was to show a human getting pulled apart, choiceless intergration with the machinery. But I don't think I have conveyed that enough in the imagery yet.

Some of the ideas for the backstory involve the way people love to be productive. Sleeping, quite unproductive one would think, for one third of you life you lie in a bed motionless (usually). So intergration of machines into you body that can control you as you sleep. They are passive during the day, perhaps helping your physical strenght, stamina etc, but once that time comes, when you must sleep, the machine takes over. You sleep while a machine runs your body, 8 hours a day saved, workers can go all night, sleep while their body is run by implants. Their brain is asleep, but their body isn't. The world becomes a metropolis, new things are discovered at an unprecedanted speed, but how long can this last? Technology has a way of advancing itself.

This is sort of the Bare bones of it, it's linked into the evolution stage also I want to make it a narrative on the page, with some words, the actual charactor telling of this anguish and history he is in, with few, few words. Got to get working on some vivid imagery I guess.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Well, I haven't updated in a while, very very intense term for collage work (about 5 architecture progects, erkkk) So this was just a quick sketch to take a break for some things. I'm thinking of flesh and machine to use each other in this, machine is stronger, but flesh heals itself. So maybe flesh can heal machine perhaps. At the bottom or some sketches that I will add in as a type of montage to storytell. (life of this guy)The unwanted assimilation of machine into flesh. Any ideas?

I'm gonna have to finish this in the next couple of days, as the deadline is on the same day as a portfolio handin ack! Anyways.

I have added more movement to the picture, changed the wings around a little, still is quite a sketchy form at the moment. I'm going to add a draw border to the pic, to seperate the thumbnails, which will show is "change" into what he has become, and at the bottom a zoomout on him and the environment. I like the lit from the back backround but I may need to figure out what to do with it.... any suggestions?

I love your image bud, the movement in the pseudo wing things is awesome, looks very violent and angry. Pain is something that comes into mind. For some reason, the story of the Phoenix comes into mind when i look at this image.

Its as though your man has rose from ash and has been reborn but somewhere along the way his rebirth was manipulated and he has all these machanical artifical parts. Would love to see some colour in the image, that is if you had anything in mind.

With the background, to suit the story im picturing, there would be a of fire and ashy strokes flying through the air. Like a huge inferno of fire. Dont know, but thats what i see.

BTW i checked out your hydra too, looks amazing, absolutely beautiful. congrats:bowdown:

keep the updates coming, cant wait to see more, esspecially if youre able to find the time in your busy schedule. I completely understand, been there done that you could say. All the best.

Well here is a little update. Time is a running out but I couldn't do any work on it in the last couple of weeks, because I needed to get my architecture portfolio finished, whew, handed in yesterday after 50 hours of no sleeping, so that had to take priority. So what I'm going to do with this image is to finish a crop of it at this size, because I don't have time to finish the whole thing the way I originally wanted to, but if anyone could tell me if the one before this looks alot better than this? Should I take my chances and try finish the larger one?

Just adding a little colour and fixing some things like the ribs and the head angle, and trying to figure out what to do with the backround

More update, painting like mad. 24 hours to go right? Anyone have any critics, I'm a bit lost with what to do with some things so I'm just painting and seeing what is coming out.

Some progress, not sure what to do with the backround yet though. fixed head position properally, and lines up muscles with skeleton properally.

Well almost there, frantic painting. Got the head sorted and just going in for the last run now, hour left. I was just wondeirng if anyone had any critics, any main parts that are wrong, no one here to ask. Home alone.. (since I have been staring at this for a long time I haven't been able to look at it with new eye, except for fliping it) Thanks.

Alex.
