shader for what?
the soft look is due to the lighting, i think everything else is modeled in Zbush.

3dMax. not mine BTW. But great modeling.
Shader is probably just default grey, and little red light.

..... No.
This is RayDiffuse shader.
RayDiffuse is a shading utility aimed at providing a method for shading based on occlusion [ie. shading surface points that are close to each other]. It uses a monte-carlo sampling method similar to modern global illumination raytracers, and as such is useful for radiosity-type effects as well as dirt shading.

Ah, rayDiffuse. It's actually occlusion shader and there's few of them available for LW. I've been using one that isn't released (yet, possibly never), there's gMil that comes with LW and then there's everyones favorite, EE_Grit (http://katastro.fi/~eetu/grit2/), a very powerful occlusion shader.
Of course, standard gray and some GI will help you out too :)

Don't forget"GMil" which comes with LW. It's an occlusion shader that might be a bit more appropriate than Grit.
For ray occlusion to work it needs a well tessellated smooth model. That doesn't appear to be the case with the old Beethoven head, that's why it looks crap.

gMill... it looks nice.

I don't know, almost 2 minutes of render I find a lot of time for that key; bake backdrop radiosity or the spinning lights trick (or both) maybe gives you better times.
