ReEncounter - Basic Concept

Lars and Keiko met in early Spring, just three days after he arrived in Kyoto, looking for work in the restoration of the Heian Jingu Shrine. The shrine had suffered severe damage during the meteor shower of 2134. He had considerable trouble earning enough money to travel to Japan, though, and by the time he arrived, there were no positions left to fill, despite Lars's skill and artistry.

He had spent everything he had on that one-way ticket and he now found himself stranded in a distant land.

Since Lars didn't know the language very well and Keiko spoke fluent Swedish, she adopted him like a stray puppy. Unfortunately, her economic situation was just as precarious as Lars's so all the help she could really provide was in the form of guidance and translating.

Lars and Keiko fought together against the tough times, getting odd jobs here and there that allowed them to survive. As the months passed, Keiko noticed that she no longer saw Lars as just a stray puppy. By then, Lars's heart had already been beating faster at the sight of Keiko, walking through the showers of cherry blossoms, for quite a while.

Realizing that they couldn't get married or start a family under their current economic situation, Lars and Keiko signed up as indentured miners for Star Crystals Inc. the largest and most respected provider of rare gems.

Of course, with a whole galaxy of minerals at the reach of any inter-stellar mining company, it became increasingly hard to find a gem that could really be called rare.

Companies had to seek in the most unthinkable and hard to reach places and, when they happened to find a gem that was really new, they had to mine it as quickly as possible, before the competition flocked to the site.

Mining for rare gems was one of the few jobs where humans were still hired on a regular basis. It was a job that required patience, care and artistic sensibility in order not to damage the few gems of greatest beauty. The pay was good. In five years as indentured miners, Lars and Keiko would have enough money to start their own handicrafts shop.

...However, they soon realized that they had signed up for much more than they had imagined.

After eight years, by mere chance, they were able to see each other again...

This is the basic idea of how Lars (well, the left half of him) will be looking the day of the re-encounter.

Keiko's model should be looking pretty similar, since they both started working at the same time.

Hmm, I'm not too happy with the arm. The hand looks functional but I'm not sure I'll be able to position the fingers the way I want them with it, so maybe I'll change that.

I still have to figure out how to add a conveyor belt or something to carry the stones from the arm to the storage compartment at the back.

I'm also worried that it might be too much machine and too little flesh.

Here, the spinal protection cover is open for heat dissipation, which must be performed every 3 hours. It was because they happened to be "refreshed" in contiguous chambers at almost the same time, that they could see each other again, if just for a moment...

Detailed story and I like the sketch, just can't distinguish which parts are metallic, which are organic. I'll be checking for new images. Good luck

Wah! I can't believe I haven't been able to squeeze a single hour to do graphics in all this season! So today, I just asked for vacations so I'll be able to work full time on this image these last few days and -at least- be able to finish a final render this time. Yes, it's high season but they've owed me vacations for a long time :)

OK, first I changed the design to address my main worries: the excess of machine and lack of flesh and the lack of prominence of the fingers. Since a big theme of the story is that StarCrystals workers never voice a complaint or look annoyed, the fingers are vital since they are really the only "facial expression" I'm going to be able to use (and Laars too :(). I also took a trip to a robotics lab to get a more accurate idea of what a robot arm looks like so that looks quite different. I also bought a G pen to make the sketch a bit cleaner :)

From here on, it's a race against time!!!!

Oops! Sorry! I didn't see your question before posting! It's actually quite important. Here I marked the "flesh" in red and bones in yellow.

Oh! and Thanks!

I've spent too much time on these first parts. First thing modeled is the spine since it defines the dimensions of the whole thing.

The back of the brain is unfinished because it goes inside the bioelectric shielding to avoid interference so it can't be seen. I wanted to model the whole thing because it's always good to have a brain. You never know when you'll need one[/bad pun]Some parts still need adjusting but I'll try to finish the rest of the pieces first.

I modeled it based on the images I could find on the Internet but I know you can't trust everything you see there so if you detect an anatomical error (or many) please let me know.

I'm submitting the chassis without the legs because they still need tweaking.

I also noticed that you can't read the story/concept from this site. Only from the forum, so I guess I'll post it here also (even though it will appear twice in the forum):

In five years as indentured miners, Lars and Keiko would have enough money to start their own handicrafts shop. The working conditions also seemed attractive. Most miners signed up again when they finished their time and the company declared, under oath, that not a single worker had ever voiced a complaint or even so much as scowled.

...However, they soon realized that they had signed up for much more than they had imagined.

After eight years, by mere chance, they were able to see each other again...

The arm shows the main idea of the Star Crystals miners' interface. Most of the movement is controlled electronically. However, it was often the case that, after installing a miner in his chassis and spending no small amount in training, his sense of touch would not allow him to carry out his delicate job.

With enough training and tech support adjustments they'd always regain the sense of touch, but it would feel just different enough for the miner to lose the artistry that was the main reason for using a human brain in the first place.

So a connection from the brain to the fingers travelled through the miner's own muscle/nervous tissue for as much of the distance as possible.

The texture is mostly a waste away of the clone tool on the little bits of exposed flesh that I could gather from triceps operation photos. Then, just painting stripes with burn/dodge.

:( No time left to keep working on the fingers so I guess they'll just have to stay like this. Yes, the fingernails do get replaced since their sensitivity is null anyway. So modeling stays like this for now. Let's see if we can finish the render ^^;;;
