Artifical Replacment Wings for a fairy.
Not much, but I was still half asleep when I scribbled these.
I'll try to work on a real concept sketch as soon as I finish waking up.
Although I think I like the silhouette of the one that is shaded in...

Edited for Clarity!!

Looking good, but I think there are already at least one, probably several "mechanized angels" in the compo. But this is far from the worst.
The backround story rocks :applause:

Just started modeling... /=)
Made a few minor changes to my original design in an attempt to make the different peices tie in together better...
I finally got some time to browse the other entries, and I see DeCoder has a point; I've been beaten to the punch in respect of mechanical wings, a few times over, haha. -_-
Which only confirms the suspicions I've had for the last few years:
The Early Bird does, indeed, get the worm.

nice dynamic design, I hope you're able to translate the momentum down into your modeling.
looks clean, too clean ?
still early, so still a lot of time :) good luck

I had alot of free time today... =)
03-28-2004, 12:38 PM
I had to pop in and say ur idea is cool and I like the story. I am doing a a piece in 2D machineflesh of an Elf with wings. Great minds think alike ...lol
04-07-2004, 05:59 AM
Wow, element5, I just saw your entry, and your wings are so much more detailed then mine. -_-
Not to mention if the two were to ever meet in a fight a full grown elf could
probably just step on a fairy and that would be the end of it. -.-
But you'll have to step on me first, whom she'll be using as a sheild!!
-ouch, my toe!!
04-07-2004, 06:03 AM
A few more renders.
Still so much for me to learn about textures...
As for the top inset picture...
You should always take the time to stretch.
It helps increase blood flow and lengthen your muscles, eventually leading
to greater flexibility...
04-07-2004, 09:57 AM
Hi,i love the look of your elf .
keep ti up!
04-07-2004, 03:53 PM
Your Faery is coming along nicely, Thanx for checking mine out....:)
U have kept it pretty close to ur original concept but i do like the face in the concept better than the 3D model a bit square. But hey thats only my opinion. hope u dont mind.
Keep up the good work
04-15-2004, 03:19 AM
Yah, I did stray from my original look for the face...
But by the time I tried going back and changing her look to
something closer to the one I had intended, I had already gotten too attached to the head she has now. -_-
I'm pathetic. =P

So now I find a fork in my path...
The wings tap the user's internal magic reserve for power,
Like the one that fairies normally would use to,
you know...uh... make flowers bloom, and...whatever
it is they used to do with it before they lost their wings...
So that is something I wanted to affect the appearance...
Magic does glow right...?
So I was playing around with lighting...
First applied it on all the lines...
I was liking it, but it does draw alot of attention away...
So then I restricted it to the actual wing pieces themselves,
But it seemed to distrupt the flow too much,
once again the peices did not tie together very well...
So I considered just going back to no glow,
But once seeing the light it is hard to turn away...
So I ended up trying to compromise between everything. -_-
I am still having trouble deciding...
If anyone has any preferences or suggestions I would be very glad to hear them...
I have a short film planned that takes a look on 'my' alternate view of fairies (I dont like the pissy little 'Im going to go sit in a flower' type of farie....Noo...I want a big ass DEATH DEALING fairie!!!), so your concepts are very close my my heart. :)
I LOVE the TRON style glow you have there. Very very nice.
I would work a little bit more of the detail of the 'arm' of the wing. It looks a little bit too sleek and smooth to be a 'home made' device, which by the sounds of your story is the kind of feel your going for.
Id also love to see her in some wierd sorta 'fairy' flght-suit that shes made to test out her new wings. Maybe some flight goggles would add in a nice touch.
Very nice concept, EXCELLENT character (her poses really do tell LOTS about her), and its all coming together SUPERBLY!
Cant wait for an update!!!

I like the blue glow. :D
The white was too much, and as you said, takes alot of the attention
I think you should stick with the blue ones
Just my 10 cent, though
Great work

Very nice concept, specially the wings are very nice, but I think the model itself, it requires a bit more modeling. I believe it's still a low poly character.

Love the blue has a TRON look to it.
I am sure magic glows :)
04-24-2004, 09:29 PM
Yah, I am going with the glow that fades.
At least, I think that is the one that is like tron?
I am not very familiar with that, I only saw it once, I think... -_-
haha, oh wel.
Well, if she wore a flight suit it might suggest her body is not accustomed to flying...
All she knows is her mechanical wings, because she was not born with her own.
No one has, since...a really long time before she was even born.
So for her species, having mechanical wings are as normal as having a name...
And the thought of actually being born with wings is a little odd.
So she is as comfortable with them as she is with her own limbs.
In fact, she probably thinks of them as her own limbs...haha.
Very very early, I did try a more... home-made look,
but I wasn't able to design a build in a way without it feeling like it
separated everything in two, putting too much visual distance
between the wings and fairy, which made it very hard (for me, at least)
to make the flesh and the machine appear complimentary, and thought of
as one, not separate...
This is how she has pretty much always lived,
like cars in a city, no one hardly thinks twice when seeing them...
So with that in mind, I tried to make them as sleek as I could,
To make the flesh and machine blend, not how me make machines today, you know...?
Although I guess I may have gone a bit overboard. -_-
I would say the same for the goggles, but...
I really do like the idea of giving her goggles despite everything I just said, haha.
I am going to go play with that concept...
Thanks Pyke. =)
As for her being low poly, I am very lazy, haha.
I much rather come back and refine then spend too time modeling something
that, in the end, will be irrelevant... -_-
04-24-2004, 09:33 PM
It's been awhile since I last posted [an image]... -_-
And I haven't progressed as much as I would have liked, either. =(
Other things taking up my time.
But I decided I wanted some mean plants in the background of the final image,
So I modeled that. (Mother keeps a Venus Flytrap on her windowsill, haha.)
Even though it wasn't done at the time I went and played around with what I had.
I am a very impatient person, haha.
Of course, I was just fooling around and dropped those plants in there randomly,
(I never was good at flower-arrangement...)
But even so, it gives me an idea of what I want the final image to represent,
even if it doesn't look anything like this one, I want it to have the atmosphere...
I think I want some water in there too.
Water is so very... relaxing.
Since then I have also worked a little more on the plant itself...
Which is what you see to the left... =)

It's a good concept! I like it!

good work rayje :applause:
cant wait to see more :)
06-14-2004, 04:26 PM
...yah, I'm still alive.
It's been a while.
I had no idea how much time had passed me by.
Now I'm running out of it. -_-
06-14-2004, 09:29 PM
Not much to look at.
But it'll serve it it's purpose.
06-16-2004, 02:14 AM
If I wasn't running out of time I would love to change many things.
Then again if it wasn't for the deadline I probably would never actually finish, haha.
Anyways, thanks to all who were curious enough to click on my entries,
Thanks to all who took their time to post,
and thanks to everyone for helping me realize how much I still have to learn.
It's been fun.

There is a very good and powerful mood in your work! :)
Composition and style are great too, really fresh and sweet, different of most of the others competitors .
Good luck! :scream:

06-18-2004, 01:13 PM
Thought i would pop by and see your finished piece.
You did a great job....love it.
