First competition for me. I decided to do Detective Alonzo Harris (Denzel washington) from Training Day. Should be fun, hes a cool character in that movie imo.

i simply don't see any pictures of your model, my internet is crappy though and often doesn't load things completly :( (try downloading things with it!)
oh oh! i just scrolled down, this page made the images apear. not bad looks clean, good work on the texutreing :D

great job, man. nice movie pick too.
check the angle of the brows, your model has a lucifer arch. in the refs his browline is thick and straight.

YA no kidding at least people are replying to your stuff now haha. The model is very ncie, the textures needs a bit of work but I understand it's a WIP so i'll let you do your thing :). Keep these updates coming!

Thanks for the replies guys! Im having a small problem getting everything with his texture perfect since Im working mostly from 50 x 50 gifs I could scrounge up from google. Anyway Im going to try my best to have him looking top notch when hes done.
I might have gone a little overboard on the eyebrows, Ill tone them down a bit. I was mostly trying to capture that evil/sarcastic/frustrated look he kind of holds through the whole movie. Just about every screenshot I found of him from the movie he has that look lol.

I think sarcastic works best with one eyebrow. Arching both eyebrows at the same time seems kinda fruity.

Ok heres my most recent progress. I just put on some not so impressive textures to the body just to get a feel for what I want. I rounded out the back of the head a bit since it was buggin the hell out of me, I also worked on the eyebrows. Crits comments welcome.

Yes, great job on textures. and the model is looking great too, i like the bottom of the pant legs, and the wrinkles.

Well my only trick for texturing is to have good photo reference, and if you cant take any good photo reference then make sure you can paint it. (Ive had too many nightmares working with crappy reference) Ive done a little of both since the pants and shirt are mostly painted and the jacket is mostly photo reference. Some people prefer one technique over the other I like using both.
This is my second pass I did tonight, I still haveto do a third pass and (possibly) a fourth pass. Still a lot of minor issues and a lot of cleanup work with UVs and whatnot. Anyway here you go. Crits and Comments welcome.

The jacket looks great. The pants, however... they need work. Also, I think you need to work on the face a bit. His features blend out. Maybe contrast the creases and highlights. You need to suggest features more with your textures, since you are limitedd with geometry. It's like the jacket... you suggests folds, creases and seams that you don't have the real estate to model. Going back to the pants, they shouldn't be the same as the pants. They are more gray, with darkened areas of shadow. Look at the second pic, the movie poster. you can see how the jeans appear lighter than the shirt, but when shadowed, look much DARKER than the shirt. Game lighting is limited, so you should "light" your texture, to make it look right.

really well done dude. my only suggestions are that in your references, the creases in his face (under the eye, nose to corner of the mouth) are more pronounced, gives him a more expressive, hardened look. also the inner sides of the sleeves are kinda wonky. gj

I agree with you, I did plan on going back into the face texture because I felt it was lacking a bit of contrast. So I will take care of that. Also bear in mind there is no lighting in my renders just a medium gray ambient, so everything will be much darker/contrasty when I light it for real. I also will go back into the pants texture and rework the shadowing because at the moment I did realize there isnt much. Thanks!
I also agree with your comments, I will go back into the face texture and define some of his lines a little more. Dont worry about the sleeves I just put them there to hold space for my progress render. I want them to look more like they do in the second ref picture for the final. Thanks again.
If anybody cant see the pictures let me know Ill host them someplace else, I really would like any feedback I can get since I want this to turn out perfect.

He looks great, awesome texturing job.
There is something a little odd with his proportions, I know a typical human's lower legs are shorter than the upper ones, and I think your model looks odd in that both parts look the same length. It also could be his pants ride real low, maybe a posed model would show this.
I must say it is sweet work man.

Thanks for the input guys, I havent done a whole lot of new work recently. I mostly just cleaned up some of the textures and added a spec and bump map to the model. Still a bit to be done, not sure if I will do it though. Depends on the feedback I get. Thanks again.
I threw these together real quick, not perfect, but gives you an idea of what Im going for.

the only possible thing that seems a little off to me is his hands - the geometry seems a little wide across the knuckles. Aside from that its a remarkable job! Great work!

I agree with the hair colour comment, and the knuckle geometry issue Adam Atomicc raised. I also think it'd be great to see him in the hat to tie back to the movie and promotional material a little more. [edit>] Also (looking back at the reference) those forehead creases could be incorporated. They'd be less pronounced with this expression, but they'd still be there.
Meantime, this is looking really good. It's far and away the most resolved entry I've seen so far. Great work...

But man, you GOTTA add those lapels (whatever you guys call them) on the front of the jacket. it would only add a couple faces and it would give the jacket some more depth. Right now you just have them painted on.
Think about it.

Thanks for all your comments and crits, I agree with most of you and I do plan on fixing the issues pointed out. Due to a midlife crisis, I dont know when ill be able to do more work on this model. So I guess its done until everything in my personal life gets resolved. Its kind of unfortunate because I planned on modelling the car as well recreating an action still from the movie :( Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated.

rocks, my only crit is your character looks like he's in his 20's. It just doesn't appear as aged as Denzel Washington.
