Basically this is a pilot that has been created for long haul travel through the cosmos,I might change the cables from the back to the front, very rough sketch but hey it's a start.
Ohh! and good luck to everyone who has entered and thinking of entering,i feel out of my league after looking at some of the entries but lets have some fun anyway.

Still toying with the pilot idea, just trying to get a feel for what will go where, this is a very basic concept as he will be sitting or lying in a suspended chair which he will be attached to in many various ways.

Just some ideas for the legs I have come up with.
I have decided not to have him sitting but to have him standing with the pistons in his back attached to a pillar of some sort at the back for stabilisation, the legs will stay the same attached to platforms at the feet, the platforms will extend down and back into the back pillar, also going to add some digestion hoses going into and out of his gut so as to keep his biological parts feed with proteins etc. and then extracted back out to a waste disposal unit, especially handy when travelling long hauls that take a year or two without stopping, also going to add a few more enhancements to accomodate long haul travel through the cosmos.
I will try and post a roughish concept of what I am on about.

Thanks for the encouragement it helps alot.

The pistons at the back will be changed and will be extruding from his spine, this drawing does not do it justice as I will be changing the torso area so as to expose more machineflesh waahhhhaaa.
Also I ran out of paper at the top and bottom ahhh well.
Done this drawing before I changed my mind about him sitting down but hopefully you get the idea,it will be a combination of this and the one above---sort of---maybe---hhmmmm.
Might start modelling next,I just hope truespace is up for the challenge,I know I am.

Starting to just get the basic shape for the torso and back-pistons,might have him sitting down with the pistons extending out and into the back of the chair.
Anyway here is a very early wip after about 3 hours,I know it's not much but I am going to take my time with this.
Going to have 2 pistons coming out below the top one,and the bottom 3 are going to extrude from the spine itself with skin growing around the conected parts, the top half of the torso is going to be metal connected to the bottom half of the torso which will be flesh and skin and the 2 will connect using hooks or metal staples.

Just doing some work around the spine area and the torso.
Sorry about the quality of the pic but it was the best I could get without going over 150 kb.

Tinkering with this idea for making tubing with a mechanical feel to it,might use this process and add more detail to certain parts, might apply a material light to the tubing in the middle to give it a glowing quality as if fluid or power is running thorugh it,anyway let me know what you think,I would be very keen to hear some opinions, good or bad.

Starting to model the lower leg, just getting the basic shape, then will add more details that are not in the concept drawings.

Jud... nice concepts man... and your keeping to your plan very well
Kudos to you.... i especially like the grid array... i love small detail.
im used to low poly modelling its good to let ya hair down every now and then and let the detail flow... ill keep an eye open for ya
keep up the good work man... good luck

Thanks for droppin in,I know what you mean about the detail,I have never had the motivation to go nuts into detail(being a hobbiest and all),now that I have entered this challenge I plan on going nuts and then some, plus the things I am learning as I go is the best part,I am now forced to come up with solutions to my problems, whereas before on personal projects I would get stuck and just stick it on the shelf.
Knowledge is power as they say.

Whaooow !!!
this Wip let predict a hudge modeling to fall. Very interesting the step you show in the process, it's very detailed !!!
And i love that

Got more work done on the lower leg,Still Have to do a bit more with them like round them out more and so on,but Im too tired to do it now so here is a wip.
The brownish thingy at the knee joint(which is flesh!) will be where tubing connects into the side of the knee joint from the side of the upper leg,maybe......?

This is just a qiuck paintover to give me an idea of how to merge the mech parts with the flesh using flesh tubing connected to the mech parts feeding the biological mass beneath keeping both the body and the mech parts fed with substances to keep them well oiled so to speak.
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/5/2491/2491_1080466881_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/5/2491/2491_1080466881_large.jpg)
A bit more leg work done(pun intended).
Just added a bit more detailing to the lower leg assembly.
Included a low poly mesh over the smoothed mesh in the middle image just to give you an idea of the makeup of the geometry.

This is just a sketch to help me visualise they way I want to head to be and how certain things connect, like an audio subsystem where the ear is but it is under the flesh with parts on the outside also, and the audio feed feeding in from the bottom along with a video feed and at the top another feed for maybe a neurological hook up,and I might have the flesh growing around the tubing in some way or another.

Well! got a small bit more done, decided to change the lower leg's as I was not happy with the one I was working on,still very much a wip, want to get the basic shape's down then add more detail using sub-d layers.

Really Loved that Lower Leg!! Hope to see the details for the others parts soon!! Keep updating us!! :buttrock:
I know what you mean about the lower leg but I might try and add the same kind of detail to the new version, just finding some of the modelling quite hard at the moment and my software is bugging the hell out of me..which makes me want to pack it all in but Im not going to let it get the better of me and just keep at it.

Not getting alot of time to work on this, but managed to get an hour or 2 here and there, anyway here is a quick update, still loooaaaddddsss to do.
C+C if you please.

Just got a bit more work done on the arms, the tubing on the top will be travelling all the way down the arm, going under the skin in certain areas and back above the skin, anyway let me know what you think,I would welcome some good old c+c.

dude, from your sketches he seems really sleek and slender, the model seems to be abit too wide i think. Could be because the other parts are not done though, but nice concept and modelling! The details you are having are great, looking forward to more man!!

Nice concept  good idea for space travel, you also got well done model keep it up
Yeah he does look sleek and slender, but that was not my intention in the concept,in fact it just turned out that way, thanks to my crappy drawing skills, but I have decided to have him look strong as he will be operating large hydraulic foot pedals with his legs and large levers with his arms and so on,I agree he is a bit wide looking at the moment but I still have loads more to do and that wideness will eventually become less wide.....
Thanks for the crit Ravendsg and keep it coming.
Cygnus_X:Thanks for the comments, love your blue alien by the way.

Just an update on the arms, the tubing looks too square but that will be fixed later.
Need to make the arm a bit bigger around the muscle area...phew...still llooooooaaadddsss to do.

Just a little bit more work done on the tubing, might leave it alone for now and then add in more details when I go and model in one of the sud-d layers, because when I model and change geometry in any layer above the first then I cannot go back,so I am going to get in as much detail as I can in the low poly mesh first then go into the sub-d layers for more detailing.

Hi Jud... yeah man you're entrys coming along sweet man....
your characters got a real organic look to it.. its like the mechanics are actually living... anyway man rockon
Thanks for the comments ParadiseFlyBird, with the arm I wanted to clearly show the mech parts and the flesh parts connected to each other, going to try and do this with the rest of the body also.
cheers.

Great work you've done on the upper arm .

Bit more done with the arm, just thought I would show the arms with the body, had to bring in the side's of the body to accomodate the shoulder area as it looked too wide,I did want it to look wide but not too wide, still wondering about the lower arm the the elbow area and where to go from there....?
Screw it! Im going to bed.
Here is the pic..
C+C as always!
Good night or morning or whatever...!!!

P.S Thanks for the comments harnelbe,Appreciate it.

Got a bit more done on the arms, the pistons(there are 2)inside the shoulder run out and into the arm,so when the pistons push out the arm will rise and when they pull back in the arm will lower,he will need this power to control the large levers hanging down, used to control advanced manouvers through plasma storms and meteor showers and the like.
Anyway here is the pic,C+C as always.

Working a bit on the lower arm, still more work to do around the circumference of the elbow area and the tubing and various other areas.
Here's the pic.

Started modeling the hand,I am modeling the hand from the arm mesh because I want to keep the geometry clean, instead of modeling the hand on it's own and trying to attach it later, causing me to add more geometry to the arm mesh, therefore adding more edge's that I don't want in the arm, anyway here is the update....!
I know the size of the upper arm and lower arm don't sem to match with the body but I am trying to keep an eye on that, but pleeeeeeaasssse give me some C+C on this,as I would welcome some good old chin wag..!
And yes!He only has 3 finger's and a thumb.!

Been away from this so long I nearly forgot I entered, not going to be able to finish this as life has been keeping me busy, but I managed to get a bit more done.
This one is going on the shelf as I just don't have the spare time to finish in time,I sort of knew this would happen before I entered as there was alot going on in my life before the contest so I guess I will have to finish it at a later date.
Anyway best of luck to all those who are nearly finished, time to go visit some of you and see how you are doing.
