View Full Version : Beast of Burden - Character - JJ3D
This is my first post ! :hmm:
before all, I'm not only fighting with the challenge... I'm also fighting with the English languaje!
I'm on this challenge and I'll try to submit my sketchs soon.
You guys are great ! :buttrock: the challenge just begin and you do a lot of things !
For my Character I'm thinking on some kind of squid or octopus with a carriage that carrie blocks and collums of antique/mythology sivilization like Atlantis..
What do you think about it?

Squid would be cool. The Atlantis idea sounds like a good one. We see it being destroyed a lot, but never being built!:bounce:
Sounds great!!!
Awaiting update!
I was doing some sketchs last night.
I'm going to start with this, obviously is going to change a lot I suppose.
sorry about the webcam quality ( scanners that not work on XP )
the squid is in the middle of the ship

very cool idea. I like the squid-propulsion idea for the ship. I think it's cool that you have the squid doing double-duty as both the propulsion for the ship and loading/unloading the cargo. This should really rock as a final piece.
Oh yeah and welcome to the challenge! Good luck
erilaz ! thanks
I think that I am not going to do a new City of Atlantis,
maybe a reconstruction, because it is better to put more details of modeled in a destroyed city.
When Atlantis were new it was not submerged. And I do not have imagination to make a flying squid!!!
------
ZrO-1 ! thx! that was my idea !

cyroz2000 ! it cheers to me that you liked my things of Macross

Why I have the idea that this Spanish-English translator its help to showing me like a some kind of robot...? :argh:

That's amazing! Your concept sketches look really good captured with the webcam. They almost look like they're discovered under-water documents of ancient civilisations...
Well that's what I think, anyway!:D
Hello!
Here I leave you two imagenes
comments are welcome!!
I was working in the tentacle, the dispisicion of the little sucker things and its irregularities
I'm beginning to feel lonely here!

Whew JJ3d man, you've been working hard huh? Those detail shots are goregeous. I love the subtle creases that run along the edges of the water jet below the eye. The eye looks incredable also. Only thing about the eye is that as far as I know squids don't have eyelids. Those suckers on the tenticle must have taken forever to do! They look great and blend into the tenticle very well.
You have some amazing organic modeling skills my man. :applause:
Thx Zr0-1 !!
About the eyelid... In some photos it seems to have eyelids.
I'm going to find out
or can we open a poll?
The octopus has eyelid??
here's some twist test...

how did I miss this thread???? (arrghhh too many, so little time:))
This is looking incredible. No crits on the model right now. Although I do not think an octopus has an eyelid.
i'm really interested in seeing the harness and gear you put on it. Outstanding
Thx Stereo..
I'm using LW bones
no Spline IK
I'm gonna make a Still image, into a sumerged enviroment with a destroyed lost city.
POLYS?? mmm... :D
34.544 LW subpatch Level 0
that images upside are in Level 5
848.600 Polys :surprised ( /2, because is only one half )
Thx Taoizm !

Goregeous work on rigging those tenticles. the curves and stuff are simply fantastic. I feel your pain with all those dam bones. And to think you don't even have a nice spline set up to control them :surprised I can't wait to see it once you have the head placed into the cone of the body. Great work so far :applause:

this is the greek style column that the squid is going to load
Fedron
07-28-2002, 09:19 AM
estoy terminando a groso modo ahora..

Great great work. :wise:  :wise:
THX GUYS!
I'm HAPPY that you like the arms! :D
I was rotating bones for 4hs to get those organic curves!
yes excellent ,really impress ,and original bob ,now you have to work on a little anim ,the movement of this calmar would be fabulous .
Gabe! thx
I'm not thinking on key frames right now! may be later!
I just wanna finish a complete modeling work ( that's the challenge, no? )
I'm also thinking if I'll gonna put textures on it.
what do you think?
for the texure i say yes ,for sure ,but not for the challenge ,but after why not finish the entire piece this would be awasome for sure !!!
wow, really nice model!
I love the column :applause:
are 584 bones not a bit too much? and I really hope you used an IK spline...and didn't rotate the bones as you said
:surprised
however the arms/legs are great :)
Can´t say anything that hasn´t been said before by one of the other guys - am stunned by the details and crazy bout the idea - well -simply kick @ss piece!!!

Heh... your beast is original. Nice Idea in this thread ;).
Thanks Guys!
Here you have an update
I finished the sail
hope you like it
let me explain how this work
The squid blows water, this serve as propulsion for the ship under the sea
here the sail is closed, hydrodynamic.. you know..
but when the ship is over the sea, we open the sail and the squid can take a brake for rest. :D
http://www.iespana.es/jj3d/sail.jpg
simply beautiful. it was worth 584 bones - the flow of those tentacles is awesome.
everybody here comment me about the curves of the arms and the 584 bones
so... tomorrow I'll post a tutorial video about the legs/arms/tentacles
does anyone knows some good video capture softs?
Thx HellRender!
Here is the little animation about how I create those curves :bounce:

MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUY bueno
Suerte.

thats great beast!!all i can think of that might need work is the post above the beasts head, its too plain comparedt o the details of the rest, and also maybe make some imperfections in the geometry on the boat to make it look more aged and not so perfect, thats only if you want it to look aged though. really nice composition!!:) :)

Hi JJ3D, the squid is really exquisit.
I'm not too shure what is final in the image and what is not so I'll just freely crit.
Umm what bugs me the most is the boat/head link. It needs work. The head of the squid seems to be only interpenatrating
the boat. Same thing for the back end of the boat there, it seems boxy and passes throut the boat. I think your problem right now is the boat in general. You've got nice proportions blocked out but you need to think of how all those pieces keep in place. And add carvatures, wood bump and details. The sail is butifull tho. Oh and one last thing is that roman foundation in the far background seems like a cut out. You could place some lighting in the piece to get more proportions out of everything with shadows.
So for resume the squid is super and the boat needs work hehe.
I hope you find these crits constructive, I'll keep on comming to lend an eye. Great job so far. :applause:
Thx very much for the crits!!!:bounce:
Fedron

Crustaceans dang you! I want to see that ship barnacled! :D
Beautiful scene. Serene, yet almost on the verge of violent. I can't remember, is the squid building, salvaging, or destroying?
I love this scene!
Imperfections would be good. Sea water can be a mean thing.
And plancton! We can't forget plancton!:scream:
If I misspelled any nautical words, I apologise.

Great peice and realization too! One small thing to work on next time:always give a slight bevel to edges, and amke sure some kind of smoothing is on - the hard edges are really the only thing that standout out (aside from textures -but at normal zoom they're fine) - great job!

Well, now I have a crit (sorry). I like the bump-map on the marble pillars. But I don't think it works on the rest of the ship. It almost looks like you used the same procedural bump-map on all of the pieces. I would remove it from the ship parts and just leave it on the marble pillars.
Just my two cents. (love the latest rendering style. It looks great)
