View Full Version : Facial Expressions
mastering3d 07-07-2002, 02:32 AM Ok I no that you have to model each and every expression to get a blend of movement. But what I can not work out is how to get the teeth to move with the mouth. There is a model that comes with max showing this in action, I have pulled it apart trying to work it out but have not found the answer yet.
So all I am asking is as any of you work it out .If so how do you go about it.

I think the simplest way is to attach the teeth to the rest of the head. That's what I do.

I always use a bone for the big jaw movements in the face, so this is never a problem for me (since I can just link them). If you want a purely morph-driven set up you can, as Jed suggested, attach the teeth and gums to the head. I found this resulted in less control though, so you might want to leave them separate and either hand key them (tedious but flexible), or wire them to the Jaw Open morpher channel (depends heavily on how your morphs are set up).

@Jed >>Thanks for the reply,I was thinking about doing it that way,But the only thing thats stops me from doing it like that is lots
of vertexs all over places and it makes it very hard to see what your doing.
I Love you site and your work on there is all so great .
@Iain McFadzen >>wire them to the Jaw Open morpher channel .
Thnink that is good way of going about it.
Don't forget that even though they're attached to the head, the teeth are still different element sub objects. That makes them fairly independant inside your head object.
What I do is separate the upper and lower teeth, so that I can select and move them separately. Just hide them when you're working on the rest of the face so you don't have to worry about vertices all over the place.
Hope that helps

Yes I did'nt think of that ,I did try it the other way with wireing and found that it was not really the best way I'll give your way a try and see how it go's.
On your site how did you go about doing the interlace on the images. As I think it looks kinder cool and wanted to do some thing like that on my site.I have added your site to my site links.
I'm not quite sure which effect you're talking about, but the tv effect is just a layer with grey lines that is set on overlay ( or screen I don't remember) and that you put on top of your image.

Thanks for that info on TV plugin,I add a look around the net for
a free one and came up with this one Neology TV Mania,It works great thanks again.
In terms of facial expressions, many people overlook that you don't have to use just bones and morphs. You can making nearly anything a 'bone'. I like using splines as controllers, that way they can flow with the face, and the influence flows with it nicely.

Well, since bones are referred to as objects, almost anything can be a bone, right?
