When I read the requirements for the contest an idea instantly come to light. I won't share just yet but let's just say it involves a slightly more morale decision on slavery.
The concept has basically a few ideas for the final image, nothing I wouldn't change completely if I thought it could work better.

Because I don't really do "line art" I mean I tried, it just doesn't work for me. I have to pretty much just airbrush the image and then submit it as as the line art milestone and move on to wip coloring.
I will add more info about the image on my line art submission.

I'm trying to tighten up the details a little without getting too complex making the image appear to have noise. I did more work on the hand and moved down to the "chain" I'm confident even with the figure deformations in the arm I can create the illusion of depth.

I'm sorry, no it will be in color. I don't want to share too much information about the scene just yet. I will be sure to give more information in further posts about what I'm actually doing with the image though.

I have had to spend all my free time on other projects lately so it was kind of nice to set aside an hour and work on the contest entry.
I have been focusing this last part on defining the feeling of the head. I made a decision not to create the face until last because I believe with a face the viewer searches for emotion and feeling, and until I have the rest of the feeling in the image defined I could end up having to recreate the face.
I am having trouble deciding what to do with the arm, I don't want to go overboard and miss the deadline for the final image but I want it to be cool.

I decided I am going to try and squeeze in the extra time to make the arm more interesting. I also did some work on the neck area.

I had to stay up a little later then I wanted to work on this, but I think it's worth it.
I have defined the shape and feel of the arm, and some details. I think the meat in the arm is a good thing.

Your style is bloody awesome. :) It looks 3d but still looks 2d..just cool. :) Im guessing you're using a Wacom and painting in Photoshop or Corel Painter.

I use a logitech mouseman dual optic, no tablet. I use photoshop cs. If you look at teh edges you cna tell I make up for the lack of fluid lines by accessive smudging. Despite that I would say I have one of the smoothest mouse hands I've ever seen.

I think it's about ready for the next step, I may have to go back and change a few things or add some but that isn't a problem.
I've decided to wait until the final image to give the story behind the image.
oO i think it looks much tighter with the added lower part. it's looking real good. :] i knew you'd wait until the end to give us the story... building up the suspense aren't ya? lol :P
anyway, looking good. :thumbsup:

Well that plastic render could be very cool if you had details, at this stage it's a bit blurry.

Plastic Render? I'm not sure what you mean. The details are there but the image is extremely shrunk down, when I start working on the second layer of custom textures the original details will stand out in contrast.
:hmm: perhaps bonestudio is thinking you used that plastic wrap filter thing that PS has ?? or maybe I'm wrong, and misunderstood what he was talking about. :shrug:
anyway, your mouse airbrushing skills own. so, finish it already! lol.

You can't see from this shot but I have tightened up the areas and have started the coloring process.
I am working on a few highly detailed textures for the skin and mechanical components.

I don't want to ruin the final image by making the final color the same since I figure the final image and the final color to be about the same for most.

Ok so here is the story behind this one.
Earth runs across a planet capable of barely supporting human life. Earth puts together a plan on how to colonize the distant planet. Since the planets conditions are too difficult for humans to work in they develop an off breed of human that has several traits that allow them to survive in the new planets harsh environment.
The new species is however deficient in many ways. In the process of creating the creatures no two are created alike and have major mutations over time. In order to keep these mutations under control the military designs a skeletal machine to be surgically installed to help control the creatures but not remove the human aspect of them by just being replaced with machines.
A small group of humans and millions of these worker bee's are sent to the planet to begin colonization. Somewhere along the line the creatures who have been both used and mistreated realize they are more then just slaves and believe themselves to be the true humans and their masters to be the inaccuracy.
The creatures take over the planet and kill their human masters. The military designed into the mechanical skeletons a method to simply seize control functions and did so in an attempt to stop the creatures. The creatures however are more flesh then they are machine and tore apart their own bodies to escape the skeleton cages.
The military expecting a simple clean up job goes to the planet to find it crawling with part mutant part machine monsters with only two desires. Freedom, and murder.

A few people asked me what tools I used and the process I went through, so her eit is.
Tools: Logitech Mouseman Dual Optic, ViewSonic p95f+, Photoshop CS, AMD 2ghz, 512MB.
Process: First I created the base shapes in a lighter style on a grey bg with the brush tool. Then I would create depth with highs and lows until I had what would appear ot be about a 70% opacity image. Then In seperate files I would create texture using a combination of brushing and a few filters. Then I layer the texture over the 70% image using various layer styles.
Then I duplicate the orginal image and bring it above the textures and drop it's opcatiy down to around 30%. This adds a thick look to the shapes. I then create three seperate layers, one for highlights, for shadows, and for a general haze of both. This is tyhe slowest and hadest portion. I basically go in with 1px brush and do fine details over all the layers until the right area appears to have focus. I then create a layer for effects and a layer for scene color. This one was blue but I was very close to using a orange ish yellow.
I don't usually work in this manner because it takes too long and you don't get as much back from the image accept detail. I figured it would be fine to try something new though.
