This is still a WIP but it did make it past the scribble phase. He needs armor and some leg adjusting. Any suggestions would be helpful. He did have some protective gear but I stripped it off so I could repaint/redraw the anatomy. This is pretty realistic for me. Done in Photoshop 6, 7 should arrive soon. yeh!

This is so cool! Did you use a paper texture to get the effect towards the top? You have a really unique style...I hope you keep posting more:thumbsup:

wild--> thanks for saying the comments, I'm really into this forum but get caught up in other things, "work/life, bad self portraits" etc. There is so much talent here that I never know if I should post my junk. I'm trying to learn about the concept design field but it's slow goin'.

>the texture is a scanned raw umber ground under-painting done in acrylic. It's my standard work method in traditional paints. Working on a white canvas without texture makes me panic.

I'll try and finish this guy, but I've sketched a characterized version of him that has caught my interest tonight....

later.

Looking good Sleepless, a few points (more out of personal preference than technical observation):

I like the offset perspective and chisled forms you achieved on the face, and I think this method would be great if applied to the rest of the body.
I'm also a big fan of your more abstract pieces, and your bold use of colour in them. It seems that you're holding back your palette here for the sake of it being a little more realistic. I think you should vary the colours more as you have done on other pieces, especially around the skin tones.

Hope this helps.

Puddlefish--> I always respect your opinions, suggestions and crits. Thank you. Specific art direction is good.

I'm going to force myself to dive back into this guy and kill him off and with that I'll try reflect some colors back into his flesh. I was attempting to use a limited palette here just to see if I could do it, but too limited is BORING. I'm trying to make an effort to study the figure more closely (read: lacking in anatomy) and I do tend to stiffen up and play it safe everywhere. Why I can't let go I don't know.....
Thanks

You're welcome Sleepless, but bear in mind that my comments are really only to do with personal taste. I don't want to steer you away from trying new things and experimenting.
I'm sure I don't have to tell you that the best things are always accidental.
Keep us posted.

The computer crashed so I used the above unfinished painting as inspiration for a more stylized version....

Puddlefish....I happen to like your taste, It's all new to me and photoshop 7 just arrived so I will have to learn the new texture brushes. It's gonna be fun and I think different. Love this stuff.

jeroentje-> sorry if it sounded that way. That's what they call it in Ohio too. I'd just been chewed up and spit out by a "working" Concept artist prior to that post. I'll just leave it at that....

Don't be sorry, I know the feeling and we all need a moral-boost from time to time. I do love your work!

I like it! I think that the form is defined real well on the face and chest, and I like the way you used the brushes to define the abs. All in all, I think that it is a very good drawing/painting, but if I could just suggest anything, it would be to create a little more variation or interest in the background. The sky looks good, but the dark forms on either side of the figure are a little boring. Maybe if you use a different color besides that brown back there, or if you put some subtle details back there, like people, or other guards or carts or just define that building to the right a little more. But mostly, I'd say just use another color or two back there. Anyway, looks good!

Nice work Sleepless. Your forms are very confident and strong, that's something my work lacks in alot. I like the way you can get away with skewing perspective slightly to give a more stylised look.

BTW: here's a link to an illustrator working in Ireland at the moment, he's originally from California I think. I love his work, and think he also displays a great boldness and confidence in his forms and figures. Let me know what you think, I'm sure he'll be interested:
