Hi there. I thought I’d give this contest a go. I had an idea rattling around in my noggin’ on the same lines as the contests profile so I thought I’d give it a go.

Anyway… It’s meant to be an evil grinning clown. The evil side to it comes from his smile being stretched over his face using thick wires and what could be clothes hangers (and other stuff which I haven’t worked out yet). It’s still all very lose at the moment.

I’ll update with more info about this delightful chap when I get it clarified in me’ head.

Please excuse the badly photographed images. I ain’t got a scanner. :/

Hope you like.

Hi again. I started those pictures a day or two ago… and last night I thought I’d mess around with drawing a face. About halfway through I thought it could work as the clown. So I’m going to deconstruct his face when I’ve got the main form down.

This is an early sketch for me’ Evil Clown. It’s all very rough but it and early idea of where I want to go with the character.

I had an idea to do this character around about the same time as the Machineflesh contest popped up… and as my idea had some similarities to the contest I thought I’d submit it. If anything, the contest will hopefully give me an incentive to finish him off. I’m not entering it to win… just to take part. :)

Another update. A bit more detail this time. Still lots of detail to add.

OOH! Nice lips! :p

I really like the concept. Great stuff. Will be watching the progress on this one.

Cool idea, and nice progress too. I'm just curious about one thing though...which part of him is a machine? I take mechanical to mean (and correct me if I'm wrong) a machine that has moving parts, or is at least active in some way. As your char stands now, he just seems to have participated in some extreme piercing, which doesn't seem to qualify as mechanical. In any case, still a great character with a lot of freak-out potential :)

Cheers,
Severian

Hi there. Cheers for the comment. Yeah... there is a lack of anything mechanical at the moment. I just haven’t come up with a design for it. The idea is that he’s got a clockwork (or steam powered) contraption bolted to the back of his head… possibly in the shape of a spider. The legs of this spider are what keep the face modifications all stretched out. A kind of steam-punk overkill to piercing.:)

Hahah, great job so far. I love evil clown pictures, so I will follow this one. Maybe you could give him big floppy mechanical clown feet to make him more machinelike.

Hmm, I really like this, maybe to make it mechanical you could have all the wires driven by a machine strapped to his head that move his lips into warped shapes to make him talk. or maybe it could just constantly stretch the lips around to scare children better he he. Just a couple ideas.

Have added more detail. There’s still quite a bit to go (if I get my mits on Zbrush) but I think most of the detail is ready in the face. The clockwork contraption at the back of the head to be added next… possibly.

Hope you like. Any comments are welcome.

A small update. Have added a few more details e.g. new teeth, new thrill, added detail around the eyes… and added hair. The Thrills don’t seem to be working…. And I’m starting to dry up. It’s taking longer than expected due to the subtle unsymmetrical face. Also I can’t get my copy of Zbrush to work. Any idea’s where I can get a copy? The one from their site won’t install. :/

Any crits’ are welcome. Just be gentle. :)

… and here’s one with a placeholder robot spider attached to the back of the clown’s head. I’m still trying to work out the style of the robot spider but I’m still having trouble. I want it to look a bit Victorian… but who knows how it will turn out. :)

The spider is meant to be there to keep all the rigging tight on his face… and give him the odd facial expression… if he’s feeling particularly bad about himself. He likes the pain.

Hi. Here’s another update. It’s of the robotic element of the design. The legs of the spider are still very much temporary. Any feedback is welcome.

Hey Mat, how's it going up there in Scotland?!!

The clown is looking good. I've entered this but haven't started the first concept yet.

Yo. Hi there! Things are OK/passable up here in sunny ol’ Scotland.

The clown is coming along slowly. Having a few problems but I SHOULD finish this one, which will be nice. Look forward to your entry! *narf* Will keep an eye out for it. :)

The lower eyelids are close to finished, when it comes to detail. The rest of it needs a lot of work.

Just to let people know… I’m still here and working away hard. I’ve just picked up Zbrush2 so I’m working out what can be done with it… and it seems much can be done.

Criticisms are welcome.

the last picture is very cool!! ZBrush seems to be serious soft, especially when you want to use a good displacement I've started learning it to. Keep it going like that, very good work I think!

Here’s the clown head with a bit more detail on it. I’m not too sure what to do with the detail inside his mouth so any feedback welcome.

So far it’s about 3100000 polygons.

Oh man! That's really scary! It's amazing what you are achieving here... No crits for the inside of the mouth; it's as perfect as the rest of the face :buttrock:

Is it done in zbrush..look's scary...You have got patience man ... Normally I will loose my patience if i do such detailed work..I know...I know... to be a great artist patience is the first atribute you need and you have that... Keep working...

Wow,, this is my favorite concept. No weird looking 3D naked women in sight.

I love the way the thing on the back looks like a spider. I think in your zBrush pass you've gotten a tad carried away. You've lost the tension in the lips and eyelids. It's now just "there" rather than being stretched.

His ears are just plain ears. If I could request they be stappled to his skull. A single large staple.

Thanks to those who’ve commented on my character.

Rajdeep, Yeah, I’ll probably remove the odd tooth… or make them uneven… something to make it a bit less perfect.

Pixeljunkynz, fair comment. I agree that it doesn’t look as stretched as I hoped and designed. It seems my art skills aren’t totally up to scratch. I’m refining it as I go along but I’ll have to call it quits sooner or later otherwise it’ll never get finished. I’m still getting used to using Zbrush so the high level of detail is coming through a rather harsh. Hopefully my next model (Arseface from the Preacher comics) will be better.

"Staple the ears"

I prefer that first zbrush test. It has more tension in it.

Anyway, can't wait to see more.

Very scary model you got there. Do you sleep well at night? Nightmares? =)

Great modelling and the attention to detail is very impressive. Try cutting some holes in the flesh, it might make it look more stretched perhaps?

Anyway, definately the most f*cked up idea in the challenge I've seen so far.

Can't wait to see it finished!

Thanks for the comment. I don’t sleep well at night but that’s down to my hobby not my artwork. :) Glad to hear that you think it’s the most f*cked up idea in the challenge. I do my best. :)

I agree with the holes in the skin but I don’t think I can add that in Zbrush. In hind-sight I should have added it in the base mesh. Next time I tell you…..

Ohhh. time's running out quickly. Here's an early body for me' clown. The wrinkles are roughed in but need more detail added.

I've realised that I?m not very good with simulating fabric so it's taking me longer than expected. Feedback is welcome. Thanks

Oh yeah. A newer version of the clown head it on Dev art… so instead of uploading a tweaked version here you can see this model at: http://www.deviantart.com/view/6684738/

For those whoa re still interested… I’ve posted a newer version of my clown head at Devart. I had to start from scratch with the detail due to not having set out of the UVs properly or using set selection to break up the model into easy to use sections. :banghead:

*sigh* It’s been a bit of a struggle trying to get this ‘ruddy model done… and especially in time for the deadline. Hitting said deadline is looking rather unlikely.

If anyone knows how to apply different materials to an object in Zbrush, please let me know. I want to make the lips and gums etc but not sure how too. Cheers

Anyway, You can see the model here: http://www.deviantart.com/view/7753563/

As always, feedback is very much welcome.
