Wow, this worked out perfectly, I'm currently WIP on this guy. Hopefully I can get some good critique and really have a good entry for this comp.
I was getting really tired of seeing perfect physiques and weapons, so I decided to do a project with neither.
I think I want this guy to be some sort of a scientist that lost his legs in an accident and had to create a prosthesis for himself. 4 Legs just seemed a lot more interesting than most of the stuff I was seeing.
Will post some current WIP renders in a sec.
Good luck to all,
Justin

cool model and nice concept but i thought the rules said that you had to start a new piece from fresh, or have they changed that:shrug: nice work though:thumbsup:
jporter313
03-18-2004, 09:51 PM
I thought that at first too, it was that way with the alienware challenge, but I couldn't find it anywhere in the rules this time around. Also this isn't a finished piece, still WIP, so I thought maybe it would be enterable, just happens that I started it a couple weeks before the contest started. Please let me know if I am wrong on this guys. Thanks,
Justin

Pre-fabricated models are not allowed to be used
sorry
but yeah, that looked nice, so , start a new one, I bet it will be great!

Here is a quote from Leigh:
"Can one incorporate a generic model pre-made or does one have to use solely objects that are made from scratch?
Absolutely NOT. The challenge is a work-in-progress challenge and everything must be made from scratch. Entries found using previously made/commercially sold models or elements will be automatically disqualified. This has always been a rule in our challenges.
Please note that this includes models made by yourself (ie it is not limited to commercially available model packages)."
So it seems you can't use it for this challenge. Well, you're a good modeler, I'm sure you can make something else that is as impressive as this one.

Ah, sorry, seems m@. beat me in answering in this one... It doesn't really help that I have that newbie thing that mods have to check my writings before applying as well. :hmm:
Gah, just ignore this and next one this newbie message thing got me owned so that other one was sent first.
jporter313
03-18-2004, 10:01 PM
hmmm, I thought by Pre-fabricated they meant models that you buy or are available in the public domain, but ok, if that's the case, I guess back to the drawing board on this one. I still wouldn't mind getting some crits if anyone would be so kind. Will post a new concept when I have it. Thanks,
Justin

actually I do sleep and maintain a healthy social life too. I 've just been working on this for a couple of weeks, don't think they're going to let me use it because of that, I misinterpreted one of the rules. I already have some ideas about what I'm going to do as the replacement and I'm pretty excited about it, check back here sometime in the next day or two for a new concept. Again, good luck to all, lots of good competition in these challenges.

Judged from what you can do, you still have more than enough time to restart, besides, this model shows what can be expected.
I have no doubts you'll be able to create sum bad ass eyecandy...

Hey guys,
here's the new concept. I know it's a terrible picture, I don't have a scanner right now, and I wanted to get something up before I could get to one so I took a picture with a digital camera and no tripod. I'll get a scanned image up ASAP.
Anyway, the idea is that this Goblin has built a platform into the back of the ogre so that he can use him as a living car. The rabbit out on the pole is bait that the ogre runs after. He can steer with a stick attached to cables which are attached to each of the ogre's shoulders. The plate on the back of the ogre's head is there so that the driver can administer different chemicals to the ogre's brain (adrenaline, endorphins, etc. etc.) to change the way the ogre behaves (aggresiveness, sleep, etc.)
The goblin himself is also augmented with a telescopic right eye and a mechanical prosthetic left arm.
Let me know what you think, and I'll try and get a better image up ASAP.

Awesome model with the fat guy..too bad you cant use it.
About your new concept.
I think you should make the ogre a half-machine....the goblin found him half dead and reassembled the ogre for his own use. Make some joints and limbs metal :) .
jporter313
03-20-2004, 07:36 AM
Hmmm, good idea, I was bordering on doing something like that with the ogre, I think you just convinced me.

i like that idea, pretty clever
WOW! I really REALLY like this one...there is som e MASSIVE potential here for some AWSOME modeling...
Very 'Warcraft meets steampunk'. I like it ALOT!
I especially like the idea of having a direct input to the brain for injecting dfferent hormones.
I would do a bit more than a platform tho. I would actually COMBINE the two creatures together...sew them together....
I immediatly thought of this image when I saw your concept art...

I cant wait to see the scanned clearer version!

03-20-2004, 04:21 PM
I pretty much like the idea! hey pyke, there also was in "mad max- under the thunderdome" a sort of that idea, but it does not really matter.
I love the Idea of the chemical controlled ogre very much its a NEW variation of small guy dominates big thing, based on those ideas, it's goin to be really a really interesting tread!
rock on Justin, sounds like a great plan!
DaVee
03-20-2004, 05:03 PM
Good sketch,
Sure the platform will be not so confortable but it's a good idea.
détails will be important ithink. That will dépend to the position of your camera.
Do you really think that ogres eat rabbits? (dead rabbits or alive)
Good luck;)
(If you win buy a scanner) :p

i like from what i can see -where all the machinery is on that platform behind that guys head ...and some gearing
too?... he could have like a glass- ware chemical machine brewing up stuff as he travels,,bundled of herbs and whatnot
for the brews., maybe a little vaporizer/still for the potions.
-will see your clearer pic later-
gggggggggreat.hoppin stuff.

Hey Justin
The plate on the back of the ogre's head is there so that the driver can administer different chemicals to the ogre's brain that's a great concept..... SURE to pull plenty of great images out of that with all those l'il goblino's terrorising his back and tormenting his psyche, damn them :D
Looking forward to an update on that one:)

Hey DaVee,
my girlfriend said the same thing. She feels like the rabbit looks dead. Does anyone else have any ideas about what I could put there instead of a rabbit. I was thinking a pig, another goblin, etc. But couldn't find anything that would really fit conceptually and size wise. Maybe I'll try a pig, but I wanted to have something really comical there.

Hey all,
finally got tired of waiting and went out and bought a scanner. Here's a scan of the concept I added a drawing for the Goblin's mechanical left lower arm (In the bottom left corner). Trying to get some time today to make some of the suggested changes to the original concept. Will post more soon. Enjoy,

instead of a rabbit...
-something smaller -mouse, bee on a string.
or something huge a elephant or whale.
how about a flying swan.
,but ogres probably eat dead rotten horses or something.
or not something alive how about an old telephone booth.
a toy , fuzzy little bear.
cat and rats and cows and elephants all in a bundle.
-tie it to a rock, ogers are stupid.hahahaha
a bee-hive.mmmmmmmm honey then he could be drooling
like homer simpson..
a big donut.
a pink cadillac eldorado.
dale williams.
hahahaha....
-great character idea.
jporter313
03-24-2004, 12:05 AM
Hahaha, I could freeze a bee like the CKY dudes and add it as a practical element.
Anyway, the issue I'm having is that with really big stuff A: it doesn't work in a physics sense and B: there's not enough visual contrast with the size of the ogre.
Really small stuff like a bee A: the ogre wouldn't be interested in and B: you can't see it in the scale of the illustration.
I like the hobbit idea, maybe I'll do that, but adding a third character in there might be a stretch as far as workload. I think I'm just gonna' take some time while I work out the other details and think about it.
Will post more soon

-by the big stuff you mean the platform system?
jporter313
03-24-2004, 12:16 AM
oh, no, I'm talking about the choices for different things to put on the bait pole.
Phugative
03-24-2004, 12:45 AM
I would suggest having something that can be replaced, so even if the rabbit is dead, it doesn't matter, the orge wouldn't chase the same thing all the time. Create a system so the goblin can replace the meat, then it doesn't matter what it is.
jporter313
03-24-2004, 01:08 AM
Yeah, good idea on that, I'll keep thinking about what could be in there for the image for this contest.

03-24-2004, 01:21 AM
One thing that throws me a bit, even though someone has already done something I don't see the issue... reason being is a : we all have a few months to do this, and b : if you get a head start you just get done earlier but everyone has already seen your idea then so they can rip it and you aren't so unique by the end. Doesn't bother me if people use old models because I don't think in a design competition it gives you an edge... furthermore there is no way (sadly) of saying that someone didn't do it from scratch and proving it unless someone else knows them... and i have seen a lot of models on these posts that seem to me like they were already a wip and are now being brought out of storage and there is no way to prove/disprove that. I know I'm doing mine from nothing but eh it all comes down to the judges and the final image
guess we'll see how it goes
great work so far... one thing you may want for bait is a babies head, he looks like a canabalistic ogre :)

hahaha, nice, yeah, you gotta' love cannibalism.
I'm not too worried about the WIP I have getting nixed, I never would have come up with this concept if I didn't have that experience and I'm pretty happy with the way it's turning out so far. Yeah, it sucked at first, but in the end I definitely see it as a blessing.

Very true :)
Its always good to have a "push" to get your motivation started and working, I know I have a few pages of sketches for mine right now so we'll see how it goes. have to scan em in and work on the model where i can really tweak...
so have you finalized what you are going for with the bait now ;)?

Hey all,
added a drawing of the little herb mixer on the back of his chair (thanks Cloneops). Also tried out a mechanical leg for the ogre, don't think I like it at this point, I'll keep thinking about that. Also stuck a pig in the harness for the moment, think it's better than the rabbit but I'm still considering maybe doing something else. Thanks for all the suggestions and I'll try and post more soon.
