View Full Version : Beast of Burden - Character - particle
particle 07-06-2002, 05:40 PM This is my first challenge, but I have been watching every one since the start. I am pretty new to this, so I will need all the help I can get. But, on to my idea...
I am going to do simple dragonflies with harnesses to carry stuff. They will be like those huge helicopters that carry stuff dangling under them. They will have a small saddle for "little people" to ride on. I am going to have them carrying simple building supplies like rocks and bundles of sticks. I have a drawing, but it needs some work before I post.

I found a few great reference pictures on the web of dragonflies...

Here is my progress so far. Yes, I know what it looks like, but I am too tired to start adding anything else tonight, so pull your head out of the gutter.

Very nice start there. I like your progress with the 3D. Those are nice reference pics.

Thank you for the support.
I am currently working on making the main body look segmented along with the tail. Debating whether or not to make each segment a seperate peice or model it all as one peice. Should have an update up later tonight, so check back in about 7 hours.

It would pro'lly be easier to keep it one piece. I don't know jack about Lightwave, but it looks like you are modeling in sub-division surfaces. If so you could just add "rings" of detail around the body where you want a segment seam to be then pull the seam in. I think that would be easier, especially with rigging it for posing than separate parts.

Cool, love the dragonfly idea, look forward to seeing how this goes. Those really are great refpics too..if you took those colors from it that'd be really nice too..
As said, I'd say leave it one piece also..just bandsaw or shift etc. bits, etc. like you're doing, you can get plenty of segmented effect but it'll keep the natural feel you have going.

Thanks ZrO-1. Yes, I am using sub-d surfaces. Makes organic modeling so much easier. I am going to keep it one peice.
I have to ask, how do you model so quickly? Your BoB is amazing and it seems like it is coming together so fast. I have problems just getting the main shape to look right.

Those are great references you've got there! Any chance of a link for the greater good of modellers everywhere? :D
Really nice progress. Keep it up!

Ask and you shall receive: Digital Dragonfly Museum (http://stephenville.tamu.edu/~fmitchel/dragonfly/). Just click on the link to the image gallery. Like the title suggests, it has dragonflies only.

Ok, here is my update for now. Not much to look at. I am slowly adding the segments to the body. My next step will be to do the head and then the wings. I will tackle the legs and harness after that.

Thank you to all that stop by and leave a message. I like to hear what people think.

Well, I put in a good amount of time into this today and this is what I have to show.

I am still playing around with the head, but the rough shape is there. Next comes the wings and legs. I will add more detail once I freeze out the sub-d at least once. Thanks for stopping by.

Just a little update. I added wings and started on the legs. Dragonflies have very long legs!! I wasn't sure what areas people would want to look at, so I tried to cover most of them. Critics and comments are more than welcome.

OrestesMantra: Thanks for the encouragement. I can use all I can get. Your entry is looking really good. I have always wanted to do a dragon, but never thought I could.
I am hoping to get one more update posted tonight. I am going to finish up the legs, add a little detail to the head and body and then freeze out the model to add even smaller detail and attach the wings to the body. Good luck everyone.

Well, it doesn't look like I will get to finish this. I am in the process of moving to New Mexico. I was really hoping to get it done before the deadline, but I guess it will have to wait. I do plan on finishing the peice. I think it will be fun to texture and animate or at least pose. Thanks for all those that gave me feedback. Good luck everyone.
PS If you live in the Albuquerque area, drop me a line, I would love to hear from you.
