View Full Version : File Size Increasing Problem
03-18-2004, 06:07 PM
I´ve been working on a proyect recently and my files seem to increase their size for no aparent reason. My co-workers are using a copy of the same scene and theirs are 10 megs big while mine is climbing up to 70mb!! The only difference between my files and theirs is that the non-animated objects in my scene are beeing loaded via X-ref. Every time I save the file gains size (even if I didn´t make any changes). Btw, I´m animatig manually and with reactor too. I have no clue, is it the x-ref? the reactor? Some max bug?
Has anyone got any idea?
Thanks in advance.

I'd say it's reactor. Are you processing alot of dynamics sims? If so, and you are outputing them to keyframes(not in the realtime viewport), than that could very well be your problem.
Reactor puts out ALOT of keys...especially for cloth and complex meshes. Remember that each vertex gets keyed, so that's alot of information. Not to mention the length of the simulation.
So, first try deleting all your keyframes from a copy of your working file. Save it somewhere(remember not to save over your good scene), and then look at the size. I bet you will see a great difference.
Reactor has a "reduce keys" function in the Utilities roll out in the reactor panel. Try using that. You will probably find that many of those keys serve little use and can be removed.
Let us know it that helps.

I´ve deleted the reactor objects (20 aprox) but the file only reduced it´s size in 2mb. Another thing that I´ve tried was to merge the lights only on a new scene, and later the geometry on another one with no result in both cases.

Could it be that your co-workers have file compress on save turned on (can be found in the customize/preferences file tab)
and you don't have it turned on??

Go to the file menu -> open Xref Objects -> close
Go to the file menu -> open xref Scene -> close
Now on the bottom left pink text box type “gc()” enter ... without the “” :)
Save ... the file is normal, try this with the other scenes please.

Simcon: Nope, we´re not using file compress.
antero: obrigado! It did work perfectly. Indeed the solution to my problem. Thanks a lot. :bounce: :applause:
