View Full Version : Beast of Burden - Character/contraption - Mattman

What's up ppl. This being my first time participating in a WIP challenge, I hope I can get a decent portfolio piece as well as some constructive critiques from everyone.
My BoB is still in the concept stage, but I thought I would post my first head study.... you may recognize that this is just a simple rhino head. I like the shape and angles of the rhino, and will use it for inspiration as I mutate it into some type of giant monster :)
Just thought I'd get my thread going. Any ideas or advice?

Nice study piece. I look forward to seeing your BoB concept take form.

just another idea, not anywhere near final concept.... after this sketch i decided not to make it a "blah" 4-legged creature, so expect something more extreme. I should be able to nail down my concept this week so I can finally get started on the model!

Very nice, I like how you took the rhino elements and streamlined them into a new design! Good work there :applause:
So I guess my BoB is a "blah" 4-legged creature then, eh? :D

I definetly like how you did that. It's very explanatory of how you are aproaching this piece.

timothyD: I just meant i'm trying to "push the envelope" and exaggerate my concept (trying to stay away from the normal 4-legged creature stereotype)
besides, you're much farther along than i am! :) i'm still at the drawing board.

Very interesting progression. I am eager to see how it turns out. THe latest update has a very "Star Wars" feel to it.

well I didn't like what I was doing much before, and this is the final concept (well, expect more detail than this drawing depicts).
i'm not sure of the scale yet, or if it will be pulling anything but i will continue to hash that out as the beast is modeled. more posts to come of actual 3D work! wow, can ya believe it? 3D? kewl.

Nice Design! The Digital Painting is "sweet and by that I mean totally awsome!"
You can put a link to your portfolio in the "Signiture" box in the edit profile section under "my profile".
Keep up the good work, I'm excited to see the end result. Im assuming your doing it in Maya...right (?)

Maya all the way. also, i've been using photoshop for the color sketches instead of painter :hmm:
one of these challenges i'm just gonna flip out and design something totally awesome! haha.
next post will have latest on the modeling, i promise

:bounce: Oh Mattman i really love you compact rihno!!! He's so cut and strong at the same time!!!
Some advises:
The eye is too small. And you should tweak a little the eye part of the head. Look at your sketch, the eye should be in the same line than the shoulder fold.
Keep going dude yours is a winner!!
Mattman
07-22-2002, 07:29 PM
thanks for the crits.... you're right about the eye thing. i will have to make some adjustments on the shape of the head, too, which might fix it....

Awesome! This beast is gonna be slow, but can probably walk right through a 1m thick concrete wall without as much as blinking... ;)
The sketches are a nice touch, so we can see how your beast was evolving in your head! Now the models seems to be turning out equally well, keep up the good work!

Nice Matt, very nice, keep going  !!
if you stick to the sketch this will be my favourite BoB, I love this "character"
Absolutely adore your design - it's one of those subtley brilliant ideas that makes you go "Damn... I wish that was my BoB!".
If you're model gets even 50% of the level of character in your design then you're onto a winner for me! :D
Have a clapping green grinning round thing -- > :applause:
Oh and MORE!!! :D

Your 3d character does not show the same emotion of your sketch which i liked so much.
Give him deeper rings around his eyes (don't know the correct term for that  ). In your sketch he looked more defensive like beeing afraid of a stronger animal. Maybe work on that!
But apart from that: great!
Mattman
07-24-2002, 07:44 PM
thanks for the advice. yes, i had forgotten to capture the emotion, but then again i didn't have an emotion in mind for my concept sketches.....lack of thought/depth in concept? probably

Looks great :), Very original character
BTW: what is wing 3D? It looks like Nendo to me, is it similar? What are the benefits of modeling there? Is it hard to export/import between Maya/wings3D?
Mattman
07-24-2002, 09:28 PM
wings3d is a free app. some guy couldn't purchase Nendo (ever try to buy a license to Mirai?) and decided to write his own app. it has most of the functionality of Nendo, and is updated quite often by the guy. it can import and export .obj and .3ds files, among several others (if u want to import/export between wings and maya, you'll need the obj import plugin for maya)....once you get used to the interface, the tools are great....especially for a free modeling package! - but, no rendering.....

Ah yes, good old wings3D. I have also had the pain of trying to get a hold of a Mirai evaluation.
Why Nendo? WHY???? :scream:
