This is a man who was plucked out from the sea of dead in the Rebellion. Rebels fighting for freedom against a tyranical government with the aid of a runaway scientist took him and fitted him with mechanical parts they could find scattered around the battlefield. As guns and projectile weapons are hard to find, he was retrained with the use of a giant "Sword" by a old Japanese Bushido Master in their midst. Nothing was known abt him, even after he was brought back to life. His memory has been wiped out.

Claymation and 3Rd User,
thanks for ur support! Its always nice to hear something encouraging :D Don't think i stand a chance though, juz joining for fun and to "force" myself to work on something else other than those for work :P
and 3rd User,
I don't deny i'm a fan or FF and actually the sword is something like those large swords used in FF7. I've always wanted to do some extremely exaggerated stuffs like that :P

Please be careful that you do not create a mech warrior - that is not what this challenge is about at all. You must clearly retain a decently high level of organic flesh in the final character, and the way in which the mechanical parts have been added to his actual body parts needs to be clearly visible.
Ravendsg
03-20-2004, 05:17 PM
Rhezz
i would take note abt it. Thanks for pointing it out :) Maybe i could extend the length of the arms to make it look more menacing too :D that could be cool something like evangelion haha but not THAT EXAGGERATED :P
Leigh
thanks for ur reminder abt it. My concept was to actually have the head, upper arm, and the stomach area as flesh, but i think now the armour was covering it too much now. Would think abt exposing more flesh and maybe have an "afterbattle" look to it to let the flesh and machine joint be more apparent. Should be better i guess? :)

Thanks for your words of encouragement :) Would try my best to work on this model till the end :D never ever did complete one for myself before though, esp a high poly count model. Its quite embarassing to say this, but i don't really know how to manipulate too many polygons, or where to place them. But would be adding more later on, as i carry on working on it, i'm sure
Anyway, hope to hear more comments on how to improve on this model. Thanks guys :wavey:

thanks for ur comment, and well, i do prefer working on low poly stuffs rather than hi poly, makes it less complicated, and faster to do too! :P i'm juz lazy to figure out all the vertexs and edges... i would smooth it out more in the later stages, but i think i'll keep it that way till the rest of the body is done :)

Rhezz

If your program has a Mesh smooth type of thing (3Ds MAX has one...Im using the MeshSmooth modifier to get the smooth sort of look coz I find LOTS of polys to be complicated a bit).

I guess i'll be using this for my final version of the Samurai. More modern and younger looking guy. The cylinders on his back are power supplies for him to use during battle when he needs it. Those on his lower spine will be kinda like backup power supplies. 3 big ones and 2 small ones. His muscles will be replaced with special metal that contracts and expand to the electricity produced in the brain. Thus causing a metallic glow under his skin where they are implanted. On other parts, they are used as strips to enhance the muscle fibres, because of the limited resources of the rebel fraction. His feet and arms were also replaced, as shown in the final sketch. So that he is able to handle the extra large sword and the large enemy forces, with different types of units, which range from humans to robots to a mixture of both.

you have very impressive concept work, truly great to see, very basic to let you have a lot to build on. All the modeling is nice too, low poly might be fine for you as well, low poly can work as long as you are a great texture artist ;) can make up for a lot. do some serious paint shop pro/photoshop time on the textures and your low poly model will look superb ;) but as a game modeller you know this hehe...
keep up the great work, look forward to the full model. also refine refine refine, start a low poly char and just keep cutting it apart ;) you'll get the detail you are looking for :)

Redone the body and added in tights and the attachment for feet. There would be more stuffs to make it look more "attached" later on. Cuz it look too much like a pair of worn on boots now.

Hiya ToiletFreak,
I've attached an image of how the hair is done, basically is applying a diffuse map and an opacity map to a plane and then "wrapping" the plane around the head. Then duplicate around and adjusting the vertices until you are satisfied. You can also apply to other maps to the specular and bump to make it better looking. But my model is currently using this method as a placeholder. Hope this helps :)
Rhezz
03-26-2004, 06:19 AM
cool hair dude :)
I notice a seam going through the middle of his body (obviously where the mirror line is)..I get that too. Im wondering..how do you fix it in your models? Do you just adjust the vertecies later on when you're finishing up? or do you just 'unmirror' the mirrored side, attach the sides, and then weld the verts?
If its the latter could you please remind me of how to 'unmirror' the sides...I did it before but I forgot how to do it :banghead:
btw great progress
Ravendsg
03-26-2004, 06:49 AM
Rhezz,
not sure what you mean by 'unmirror' the sides, but i usually juz mirror copy over, attach the two sides, then select all the middle vertices and weld them together, lastly adjust as you like. As per wat you mentioned. No special techniques used. :)
Maybe you could elaborate on what you mean by 'unmirror'??
Rhezz
03-26-2004, 08:28 AM
Well what I use when I model is this:
delete one half..then click the copy button and select instance (it copies what u do on 1 side to the other). :) what I meant by 'unmirror' is you uninstance the other side. Lol sorry I just kinda confused myself. :)
grat progress on the model.

03-26-2004, 08:32 AM

03-26-2004, 05:35 PM
i like the last concept sketch you did a lot. he sort of looks a little like he's sd'ed or something though, i think because his legs look short in comparison to his arms. you may want to make them a little longer. i like the hair a lot. one thing though, a lot of different samurai techniques would be difficult for him to do with those big cumbersome metal hands. especially with those prongs sticking out. i'd maybe just make them a little less bulky
just some suggestions/comments/whatnot

Some suggestions:
- Widen out the nose a bit
- Make the yes narrower...they're a bit too round. :)
Like I said in a previous post...if your software has a SubD feature then use it (MAX has the MeshSmooth modifier).

Will have a look, at the model again and see how abt the face. But i'm not going for realistics more, of anime thingy, so i would exaggerate some parts. Eg the eyes. Could change as i progress, but i'm keeping the face as it is for now. Regarding meshsmooth, will add that later :) Thanks for the advice again dude.

I will be adding in more machine into the guy, just hope that it will match up the the style, as i'm not really into machinery. That why i entered this competition to push myself into it. Hope it will work out in the end. And i would love to see him in a game too, as i feel that, that is the only way to see him really come to life. Animation will be the second best.
Virtuoso:
I will really like to thank you for your compliment, and that is really great to hear something like that coming from someone else :D Its really a boost and the fuel to really get me going there. Can't really do much about the XBOX2 and PS3 as i'm not working anywhere near those cool babies, can only strive to do my best for this and thats it. Would like to take him further though, well, if you know anyone... just kidding. He is still really far from the standard set by the FF series. Can't really match up to guys like those man

Heres an update on the arms of the model. Decides to give it a piston thing. The guy on top has his right hand retracted and his left hand extended. Not going to make the machine part too complicated, as i'm not that good at it, and i feel the focus should be more on the character than on the machine for me.

Thinking about the machine parts is thinking about the universe where this character lives . I must admit that to work on the details and put the final touches and give it a good look is hard, but is when the magic of this comes to play. It can be hard, but when you find a solution is much much rewarding than hard. Sorry, this is the pain for creation but it has big prizes too. Never give up.
I find your model very well done and with style, and I like a lot the look.

Hey Ravendsg, donīt call your skills miserable , when you have interest in something improvement cames on its own. It can be hard sometimes, but is a curve and everyday you all learning more and more climbing the slope of this curve. What I do is to folow the artists I like the most, overall illustrators and painters. There is everything, light, composition, color, etc and donīt, really never donīt be over obsessed with the technical part. There are billions of ways to do a thing, what it really matters is the final result.
Hope it helps

Some extra details i've drawn last nite. The current cannisters are looking too plain, and actually i've been thinking about it for a very long time. These concepts will be modified as i go on, and hopefully the end model will not be too messy, as i do not want it to fight for attention away from the face, as they are close together. Another one is the legs, and some other stuffs. The protruding thing was actually an idea for the forehead. But not really sure if i want to put it. Will test again as i go on. Cheers!!!

well, i don't want to have the usual facial expression, and i think this expression can kinda draw people's attention to it. And the wide eye makes it look much more alife when he stares at you with that kinda intensity.... i think. And regarding the white color. Its just the default color that i use when modelling. Its actually abit greyish, but then i adjusted the ambient light too much :P the texture will definitely not be clean. Thanks for pointing it out

i like the feet style, is a very traditional samurai style!, good job there, i think that maybe the tip is a little big, maybe this is the effect that u want, but for me this guy needs a lot of freedom for movement and feet eare maybe a bit big for that, but they dont look bad, is just my personal piont of view:thumbsup:  , youre modeling nice , i got to do something soon:D

Thanks for mentioning it to me. Its done on purpose, as i like large sturdy bases, and i've did some testes to ensure that it has a good range of motion for the toes and ankles. But would give it a look again. As i'ts quite a rushed job trying to post something before the weekend. Your model's coming along real cool dude, especially loved the dress concept!! Can't wait man! :buttrock:
Tremoside:
Thanks tremoside! For me, personally at the moment, i prefer to have a larger base to make my models more sturdy looking. Thats why i think i've got comments about the size of the toes and ankle hehe. They are still valid comments though, as my design i think may be abit weird in terms of proportion. Also i have a tendency to exaggerate my designs quite a bit to emphasize stuffs, but some of the time they backfired on me hehe. Would play around with the size later since you find it still acceptable. hehe
About the sword. Not yet. Would like to hear any suggestions if you have any though. But currently what i have in mind is a modified and enlarged katana blade thing. What you think? Waiting for your updates too dude! :buttrock:

Thinkin' the same: Style fulfills function. And the feet work for me. I like the style you made em very much.
Just the question bout the torso.. it looks too boxy for me, as it seems to be flesh. and, will he be stong enough to carry the quiet massive arm armor/chestarmor, believable...
And a general impression: Fantastic style, and I love the way you build him up element by element, looking forward to a great character, keep on rockin'!!!!:buttrock:

First of all thanks the1st_angel! Cool that we think the same. I think most of us here think the same way too, its here that we can do what we want, instead of contraints by daily work of studies hehe. Actually, the stuff about him is that his internal are enhanced with machine parts. And it would be quite impossible to show it. Thus my plan was to make his spine visible, to at least show that his internal structure has been enhanced somewhat. And also his cannisters at the back are actually for me to show that too. Gonna rework his armour, as his current armour is for me to test the colors and the rough shape. I've got another idea for the armour. But might have to wait til monday to update when i'm at work.
I guess no matter wat some form of believeability is still a must. Will take note of that, and hope you guys can help me point out my mistakes in future, and lets improve together. :buttrock::beer:

A sugestion about the foot is maybe change the identical fingers for others simulating a real samurai or ninja foot ... I don't know the name of the fingers in english, but is almost like this image:

I think you could give more ID for your character, because He is not a single robot, he is a samurai  :bounce:
Those legs really suit the style of your character.
Good to see you are adding more detail into the characters parts, sure you might as well seeing as we have so much time.

Ok, I looked at your latest update now the 3rd time and I made a few thoughts:
the upper arms with the ripped of flesh wher the endoskeleton shows up really rocks. To keep it special, just let the lover arms fleshcovered. The handjoint armor seems to be out of funtion this way, I really like your feet you designed, try to keep that style and bring it up to the arms/hands. As the hands seem to be mechanical as well, you have 2 possebileties: Showing up with more functional, more mechanical style like your feet that I like very very much. Or: Make em clearly Organic, but then, I'd bring up gloves with a mix of the armor and the fabricparts, to ballance out the weight of your model. and connect the armor parts of the ellbow and the handjoint. But tis is just my impression, you might have your own vision that left you create a great and very stylish character ... so rock on mate, keep it up!!!!!:buttrock:

gulliver3, blueglitchman: Thanks dudes, glad u like it!!
mosconariz: It was meant to be heavy, but i guess i overdid it... typical of me... Thanks for your kind words of encouragement!! Just being able to create something that has got ppl appreciating is being a winner enough already for me
rattlesnake: Glad u like the hair dude! hehe the shoulders i do not wan to make it too muscular as i still want it to maintain its teen structure, that is kinda undeveloped, its only the machineries that would be more developed than him hehe, not really sure what you meant by metallic bandages, could u elaborate, if you don't mind, more ideas are most definitely welcomed dude! :buttrock:
the1st_angel: Great suggestions from you dude! Thanks for taking the trouble to point them out to me: The elbow in the original was actually covered, if you still remembered my previous post. I'm not really sure which way to go still though, as the mechanical elbow does add abit of structure to the arms. Maybe having it covered with flesh and with some parts of the machine parts coming out? I could try that out, since theres so much time, just wanna keep it clean as i do not want it to turn into frankenstein in the end. Gloves... they seem to lit up something in my mind... hehe could give it a try, to help out with my arms woes, another great suggestion hehe...
Really greatful to all the guys who helped gave critics, suggestions and encouragement! Would visit ur threads later, gonna rock up my model abit... once i get the time... stil gotta rush out something for work. Keep rocking guys!! :buttrock:
Virtuoso
04-20-2004, 08:08 PM
My only thoughts would be not to concern yourself overly with the whole Flesh/machine issue.........You have flesh, you have machine parts.....And you have armor, well flesh or machine can very well be under this armor......That's up to the viewer to figure out.I think that you are showing signs of flesh meets machine, that is what's important..................................................But even more important is the overall look, the finished look,I would just go with what feels right, don't "compromise" your work with too much flesh and machine confusion.I think that sometimes if we do that we change the natural flow of our vision............You try too hard to create machine parts or add more flesh where maybe it's not so very important................................................You have a real nice character with a great and cool face, lot's of expression and style in my opinion................You have flesh, you have machine............................................Just go with the flow, add or subtract what you think is right, don't overthink it...........:)
Anyways,,,,,,,,,,You have a really nice character here, and it will be nice to see more...............Just go with what feels right....................Cheers ravendsg.................

Hi Ravendsg,
I'm not a great experienced 3dman, but let me give an advice:
I read Virtuoso's note above and as usual he is right. You don't have to confuse yourself, your model is built up in uique style and balance. That could be a good way if you start working on his pose or environment, then you look back on your model's details you will see them with fresh mind. Perhaps posing can yhou other important things for expression until modeling could be too stiff method.
KEEP IT UP :buttrock:

New Pose. Comments Critics??
The poses are great Raven maybe in my opinion the first one is better bacause the face is in front and is easy to see it , but is a personal taste . Awesome works . Keep going

First of all, i would like to thank all the guys who visited my thread and constantly gave me support, encouragement and advice.
This is the first time ever that i really completed a slightly better 3d image. And i'm extremely happy that it was in this kind of situation and with this company. You are all an extremely cool bunch of ppl!
I wouldn't have been able to do it without this competition and without you guys. So an EXTREMELY SINCERE THANKS to all of YOU!
