View Full Version : Orkish Hiena
Fedron 07-06-2002, 01:43 PM I made this model in february this year for self training.
I'ts made in MAYA. It was modeled with nurbs and converted to poly for skinning and rigging.
The concept was a pack beast, some running machine inspired hienas and african wild dog. I made a mix between diferent dogs like boxers and greyhounds for the body.
I'm doing an all genealogy of 4 eyed fauna. I allready have sketches of antilope kind and felin too. I'm doing somekind of buffalo right now.
The idea for this 4 eyed beasts is that something happened on the superficy and a great extinction eliminated all the big animals.
With time animals mamals of the sea came out for recolonize the emerged land. That wy they have this bizarre bulbous head like some dolfins. The 4 eyes is like some diferent criteria applied to all this species.

The texture was a long time job, all mouse painted in photoshop. It's based on african wild dog. I add some fur in some places like the spine and stomac.

Hey! That's really cool modelling, true to the scetches too, and the texturework is very well done.. however I think it would look more scary "naked" if you know what I mean! You know, no fur, with wrinkels sort of like a lab-rat :surprised :)

Hope ya like it guys!! :)
C&C are welcome.
love it!
great model & textures!
what really impresses me is how well you went from conceptual sketch to finished model without missing a beat...
Perhaps one of the best translations I've yet seen.

Thanks for the comments :)
Grey, i know what you mean. Sometimes things get really complicated and you're allways adjusting everything never satisfied with the result. And other time like this one thing just flow :) . I' don't know where is the secret, just sometimes it happened and sometime not.

Your textures are great. The model looks really good too and your use of fur is just right. Very nice.
One thing though...delete that head. Make a new one. I don't know if anyone else agrees, but the head is kind of lame. Four eyes and big teeth. Personaly, it would look awesome with a realistic face and eyes.

Fedron, I realy like your concept an deven more your model. And texturing and riging is marvelous.
I have one question for you, I am now using 3dsmax 4 and i am prety hapy but i am more and more drown to NURBS patches in Maya.
Are they easy to use and what's your opinion on it?
Thanks in advance.:)

You know what thought just popped into my head? That the Hiena looks just like the little dog from The Mask when he puts on the mask himself and has that huge head with all the teeth. :-)
cool texturing job. gotta see the bad boy in action.

Damn! That's scary! If that thing came running at me I think I'd have to change my underwear.
The only thing I would change is the edges of the black patches of fur. It looks a little too sharp to me. If it had a slightly softer edge maybe?

Thanks you all for the comments guys :)
little5points ------> Good point, i will soften it.
genesis max -------> Yes nurbs in MAYA are very easy tu use, it's very similar to spline works in MAX. But i must confess that i'm not going to work any more in nurbs for charaters. I learn polygon well now and i preferd it. It's more intuitive and you can improvise much more. The texturing part is much more precise too. MAYA have a soften modifier very cool wich tesselate your model conserving the rigging, the blend shape expressions and the Unwrap of the low poly model.

Thanks for the info Fedron. Yes polygon-SubD metod is very easy and seems like becoming standard now.
I wish you best luck in your future projects.

I like this creature alot...very well done...The only comments I have are that his tongue is not wet enough...and a bit to bright pink...maybe add a tighter specular and tone the color down a bit...also you did a real nice job with the textures and fur...I would say in general not as much detail was paid to to the mouth area...maybe add some better texture to the teeth and gums...overall very sweet!
God!Its amazing!
Looks very interesting:buttrock:The fur and pose looks great!
only feel the structure of the back legs looks better than the front ones.
