View Full Version : Moscow 2375 is BACK!!!!!
DSedov 07-06-2002, 09:02 AM After my hdds crashed I though to hang my self and jut go into accounting business =) Two months of work was lost.
However my friend gave me the application that restores files from crashed disks. It didn't restore the main object file of crouse but I got all the textures and some of the buildings back which made me the happies man on earth!
So I remodeled some of the buildings that were lost and put it back together... here it is!! As always C&C is welcome:

Well I think this rocks BIGTIME!
Great.
some C&C.
The blinds (?) on the windows. Even if only some of them are "extended" it would be nice to see the ones that isn´t extended, (i.e. rolled up above the windows).
How much neon signs are you going to put up? Considering that the traffic lights may blend in (too well) with comersial signs I´d say kep them down to a maximum of one sign (row) per corner. (traffic hassard :)) But the cars probably have autopilots anyhow so... pfsst.
And of cource the cars and the people and the... things...
Just out of cureosety, why Moscow?

Thanks guys for replies!!
RobinOberg: I guess I have big problem with those awnings/blinds whatever they are. I know it looks worse without them but they just dont look quite right. I thinkg I will have t odesign something different and apprepriate for the future. =)
wgeddes : Aha =) I was trying to get away from this vision, tried not to watch The Fifth Element for a while (one of my favourite movies, after Leon and La Fame Nikita)
Henrik Hörlin: Me Neither =) Im building a glass fence around those things now =)

lighting needs work. everything looks too flat. things don't seem to have enough weight to them. perhaps work on speculars for things.
is everything beveled? don't underestimate the power of beveling.

hehe don't worry, i think the city itself looks really neat and original, its just the lighting thats very fifth element :D
You're a Luc Besson fan too? I love his work, though I haven't seen the Deep Blue yet. I'd have to say "Léon" is my favorite (international version)... the scene where he's forcing Mathilda to climb down through the wall, and he says "You've given me a taste for life, I want to be happy, sleep in a bed, have roots... you'll never be alone again" just gets me every time!! *sniffle sniffle*
hehe give me more screenies!!!

Here is little update. Tell me if it got worse or better.
I guess no more fear of going from one building to another. =)
Thanks a lot guys again! As far as lighting goes, I start seeing it more and more 5th elementish. But ohh well I loved the movie . so why not? =)

The image is more complex, and that is interesting. But I don't like the reflecting glass you put everywhere. too clean compared to your concrete. Future is dirty...

wgeddes : Thanks alot for kind words! If you feel like being a part of this project I will be more then happy. So far there are only two people working on this piece. My friend Vladimir who is directing this, he is a film student, and me that do all designs, 3d work and animation (practically everything that is visual)
If someone feels like helping me with this I'll be glad. This is not profit project for my Russian friend, who is a composer and this will be, hopefully shown on european and russian MTV.
Facial Deluxe: Actually im trying to get away from dirty feel . I dont really like the vision of blade runner and others that try to immitate the style. And this blue glass was inspired by a huge mole in moscow that is build like a brige over the moscow river from this g kind of glass ... really a piece of art . not that mine is =)
Here is a minor update, I've put a new red building there that adds a little more color contrast to the picture. Also Im thinking about those yellow/orange corridors on top. Should I leavethem or should I get rid of them. I mean only those two ... the topper ones not everywhere.

Henrik Hörlin

Red building = good idea.
I think you shuld leave them in BUT...
Make the corridors connecting to the next building diffrent. Get some variation on them from building to building.
Make some... uhh... street(?) lights.
Marcel

Amazing work!
Here are some pointers (mind you, from a humble standpoint :) ) that may or may not help you. I haven't followed your whole thread, so my apologies if I nag you about things already mentioned before.
I think you could add more depth and contrast to your image by using a bit more of fog in the distance. Also you could try adding some black fog downward only, to simulate the enviroment getting darker as you would go deeper and deeper.
I also feel that that the lighting lacks a bit of contrast overall, but especially in the foremost building (it's almost evenly lit on both sides). The building to the right of the foremost building has a very nice contrast between the lit and unlit side. Maybe a tiny bit more color in the lights?
The lit windows look very flat. I know that in the Fifth Element they made very simple tiny rooms (boxes) behind the windows, to give the viewer illusion of depth when the camera was moving.
Maybe add a fresnell effect on the reflections on the glass, so that the windows in the distance stand out more?
One thing that jumps out of the image are the blue and yellow colors of the corridors and the bridges, I think they would look better if the color was less saturated.
The earlier suggestion by Facial Deluxe of dirtying them up is also a very good point.
The orange corridors look like they would be a bit too small for a person to walk in, but I don't know if that is the case. Do leave the top ones in, they add a lot to the composition in my opinion.
(The image without the corridors has a better camera view in my opinion)
Minor detail, the tiny lights have a white core, and a red glow, maybe they look better all red.
Maybe add a (broken?) billboard or two?
Good luck!

really sweet piece of art.
i'd really love to see those top "corridors" again, it filled the picture out. if you don't put something else there, it'll look a bit... empty. but that's just me.
would love to see some sort of wireframe and maybe a short animation?
keep the good work up... take care.

I think your depth fog is great. It gives depth without the heavyhandedness. I would make some various billboard images and some street lamps. (for the killer night scene that I know is coming).
Now without killing your scene maybe some tree pottery to add some illusion of som landscaping. Only ypu really gonna have to vary it. Same tree (different scale settings).

Friggin Awesome!
My only comment is your lack of commercialization in your image. You probably haven't got to that point yet. Huge flatscreen tv's and holographic ads will make a huge difference.
Beautiful work!
The Magic Pen

Dsed I am like the outcome of the image so far but I think in my opnion there needs to be some compositional changes and here are my suggestions
The forground is to clutterd . I would take that top row of plateforms and move it to the back ground a bit , that way when you put flying cars or whatever else in the forgroudn it will not be totally over-whelmed in the forground for the viewer . Take a look at some screen shots of the city in The fifth element for an example of good compostion with clutter . I also do not like the blue reflective glass . If it had a metal railing it would fit with the city better , give it a harder more industrial look . The yellow glass with the metal girters fits in a lot better . Im sure you can understand everyone trying to out in there 2 cents , its an awsome picture . I cant wait to see the finished image !!
This isn't a rip on your work or anything, more of an observation, but I'd like to think in a society that has multi-layered lanes of flying cars, that we will have advanced to a point where we didn't need stoplights, or at least stoplights that look like that.
Wouldn't it be better for a supercomputer to schedule all car trips live, so no one even has to stop? I mean, it could be so exact that the lanes would be going 200mph, and the cars in each lane would be intersecting and weaving like cloth. At the very least, I don't think we'd have those yellow styled stoplights, and if anything they'd be a lot crazier 300 years from now... Think about it... Floating holographic displays that stretch over the entire lane almost like a wall in front of everything.

Matt: That is a great idea. And im more the cirtain that im going to use it.
As far as billboards and advertisements .. they are on their way. This is a really tricky thing. Im still not sure if I will have make up some company names or just use some exsisted ones. The last one might look stupid as well as bring me some problems but surely it will be more realistic.
Here are couple more images that I played with. Last one is image I made for the desktop. And the first one was experementation with color correction

Only thing I think is missing is a smokier atmosphere. I think of Moscow 2357 as a pretty industrialised city, and your generally bleak mood enhances that image. Just a thought :) Maybe a smoke stack or two in the background and some smog in the scene... Or I dunno...
Keep us posted on the progress, it's turning out quite cool. Btw, maybe some futuristic takes on old brands a lá Minority Report for your billboards?

Question for DSedov
was your buildings made out of polygons ? or did you used Nurbs, because by looking at the number of little windows and small details it would have took you a lot of time if those were booleans ...
how was it done ?

I really like the cars. The first one, blue/grey, looks a little like a hover version of the cars in Minority Report. Only crit would be sharper edges, but I realize that it's still early :) The police car isn't as futuristic as the other, but it's a nice concept nonetheless... I think I like the blue/grey best since it's more futuristic, and hover-cars were in Fifth Element.
You animation was great. Most definitely 5 stars. Looking forward to seeing it populated :)
