Hello All

A new project, the Mercedes W196 used by Stirling Moss (that's Sir Stirling Moss to you!) in 1955. An absolutely beautiful car and hopefully my model will do it justice.

Comments are not just welcome but demanded!!! ;-))

Back again!

Guybrush: please make any comments you want now, I welcome them.

Main body shape in - the rear was a little tricky to make it all come in nice and smooth.

The mouth seems to be sharp towards the middle and could be thicker all the way around.

Are you working from any blueprints or just eyeballing it?

That's a really nice car to make - i've been doing a 60's ferrari 156 on and off for a the last week - i'm having lot's of trouble with the air scoops as they pop out of VERY curved body pannels!!!

I'll be keeping an eye on your progress on this promising modelling project. Maybe we can share some ideas on bodyworking and wheels?

I've posted for help at:

http://vbulletin.newtek.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19819

and a thread may appear on here after moderation.

best of luck,

John.

looking good Conanart, just 1 thing is bothering me, u still didnt modelled or u forgot to model all that bumps on the front of the car, that big on the right side of the car, lined straight, and also that smaller bumps on the center and sides

OK, thanks for the comments all:

Guybrush: I am just about to start with the bumps and air scoops, the body is a symetry object, so I wanted to make sure I was happy with that before I started playing with it too much.

gmask: I have blueprints, I checked the sharpness and it matches the plans pretty well, I did however thinken the intake - thanks for the heads up. ;-)

Leafcutter: These scoops are really hard arn't they I ground to a halt last night trying to figure out what to do, stay tuned as they say.

By the way I am using Cinema 4D.

A small update: (Sorry if this bores you, but this is primarily an update for Leafcutter.)

I am haveing a few problems with the scoops, being a novice sucks... ah well!!! I did manange a bump and am now happy with this one. You can see the model I made of it on the right and then moved it into place, moulded it to the side of the car, deleted the polys under and just around it and then rebuilt it to include the bump.

http://www.carbon17.com/W196/Bump.jpg

This could work for the scoops too, I will be trying it soon and will keep you posted.

nice bump! I had a go at that technique but still got some deformation in the pannels i was attaching to - i guess i depends on how well you understand how the polys tug on each other when polyformed. It's a learning experience I suppose. Though i could think of a few other choice words for it!

I've made progress but got a little tired of just looking at air scoops so put them on hold in favor of a couple of other goodies:

laters,

John.

Hey Leafcutter

When I joined the bump into the body I had to tweak a lot of points to try to get rid of unwanted bumps and ripples. I have just finished the rear scoop, using the same method. It took about 2-3 hours to get it as I wanted, but I am now happy with it.

a car with a shape like this, i think it would be easier to model it in nurbs, would also be much easier to add thoose bumps, otherwise will be very complicated to add those extra details to the shape without creating bumps

Hey Guybrush

I am using Nurbs in Cinema 4D, which I believe are a little different to Nurbs in other 3D apps. The problem I was having was to make the edges of the scoop sharp enough. So rather than doing extrude inner, then extrude and move and tweak, then needing to make the hole in the scoop, it was easier to make the scoop and then put it in place and intergrate it into the body. It did take a while, but I got the result I wanted. I played around the extrude methods and spent as long and didnt even get close to the look I wanted. So...

Well, i dont know nurbs from cinema, but let me show u how i would do it in maya:

1. create the base shape
2. create the bump, in this case a sphere
3. create a circular fillet between the two nurbs

u can see that it becames very smooth

Hey Guybrush

I checked with other C4Ders and apparently your method id not possible in Cinema, which is a shame as it works really nicely. Oh well.

Apparently I need to get MeshSurgery a 3rd party plug in which should work wonders.

Another update coming this evening.

More bumps and details. The line under thhe bump on the right is where there is a cut out in the bodywork that will be done after the made air scoop is put in (this will be done next).
I hope I am not boring everyone with this, apologies if I am. ;-)

@ least me is not getting bored :)...nice to see the progresses...but u should be carefull, cause u hav some breaks on the geometry near the bumps u´v made, and also some hard edges on the air entrances, that is the problem with a car with a shape so smooth :)

Keep going it is looking great, I love these old F1 cars, lots of history in them.

Hey Guybrush

Thanks again for the input. I have been smoothing around the bumps some more (and a little more to do). The front scoop on this car is really square and the rear one starts off flowing with the body and then gets hard at the edges. The one break in geometry that I can see under the bump on the right before the cockpit will soon be gone as a large section under that will disappear from the model anyway.

As ever thanks, and I appreciate your help

OK Guybrush, as promised here is a new update, nothing serious, tweaks here and there, holes and the little wing (not quite in the right place yet) I have to finish off the symmetry stuff first, do the big intake and then split the body up.

Looking great, Conanart. Can't wait to see more - one of my favourite F1 cars. Are you using Hypernurbs? I can never seem to get crisp enough lines when I try.

Guybrush

looking good conanart...a symetrical car would be easier :)

hey conanart this is a really nice looking model :) keep up the good work and if you mind, please post a wire

Conanart

Thanks for all the feedback

Bluestar77: Yep I am using hypernurbs, in order to get the sharp lines I just add more geometry and have points closer together.

Guyrush: I wish there was a model kit for this car! then I could get close to your detail!

Meka: Here is the wire and a screen render.

Have a geat one everyone.

its looking very nice, i see u fixed a lot of bumps u had before.

i did a little search to see what i could find about this car, kits and info, i found some interesting items in ebay, take a look:

book apparently with many info of this car->

diecast model...very nice->

Thanks for those links Guybrush. I also looked on Ebay and a lot of those models (ecept the one you picked are really inaccurate). I ahve ordered an excellent book, which should be arriving soon, called Rivals by Chris Nixon, which has a lot of info on this care and the Lancia D50.

Here is a tire that I have been working on and considering this is my first tire (second attempt - the first looked nasty) I am very happy with.

I should also probably mention that I am not using the tires in the ref shot I supplied. I am using another reference.

Guybrush

the tire is looking nice, i would only round it´s contact base a little, only a tire with very low profile is flat, this kind of tires are always a bit round.
