This is the sketch and color comp for the head of my creature. It is a desert dweller, sort of lizard-ish, not too smart, but strong and dangerous. Can be domesticated if raised from the egg, and will be fiercely protective of its master. Does not make a good pet! Must always be respected because it doesn't know its own strength and can kill humans unintentionally. It is not bipedal, even though this image makes it look that way.

Gotta get crackin! Lots of people have a good head start on me. :D

I really like your design. Nice aggressive expression on it's face:mad:

Hey if it lives in the desert, it could exist in the same world as my BoB. Maybe after the challenge we could get the two together for a combined pic.

aargh, so many threads, missing so much good stuff! :argh:

Very cool head design..I like the little knobby things..makes me think of hawkprey's amazing fly monster thing a bit..can't wait to see what the rest of him looks like

(hmm, wonder if my bob universe is too different now..but it's a desert too..just intrigued with the idea of a big combo pic, and ZrO's comment in my thread about existing in the same universe has me thinking..anyway.. :) )

@Hypercube - I know! This is the busiest challenge ever, I think! By the time I checked in on the 5th to see what was going on there were already 3 pages of posts! And most of them had almost finished models in them!!:surprised I thought the same thing (about hawkprey) when I drew it. I haven't looked at his pic for a while though, and I won't till I finish designing the body, so I don't get too influenced by it. But tell me, mine's not too much like his, is it?

@Bezerker75 - Heheh! Yeah, better not get your guy too close or you'll only have the skeleton left! :D

I do think it would be cool to have a scene set up will several of the BoBs pulling some of the contraptions from other challengers, all done up in one scene. I just don't know what would be the best way to do that. I think compositing would be the only way since we all use different software, but the lighting will be tough to match.

Well, here's what I managed to model today. It doesn't exactly match the concept; I gave him much bigger jaw muscles, plus fleshier bags under the eyes to match the sagging tentacles around the mouth.

Do you think it looks OK like this, or should I make it look like the sketch?

yea, great modeling pearson! I like the way you're going with this model.
I would however give the teeth more variation. maybe make some thicker ones, and some shorter, and maybe even some cutted of.
those things that's hanging down around his mouth, those small "bumps" (hard time explaining what I mean! :) ) they look cool!! well, kepp it up. this one looks really promising so far

@fellah - Wow, thanks! That's a good idea about the teeth; they need a lot of work. I'm on it! :wip:

I love the squid-like suckers you have on the droopy mouth parts. I also like the saggyness you added to the lower eyelids. I guess the only bit I don't like is the upper eyelids. They stick out too far I think. It almost looks like a female with them like that. Not that that's a bad thing. Just that it doesn't seem to mesh too well with your original sketch.

is it just me or does that thing look like the ballchinion from men in black?:scream:

This thing is looking great!

Oooh, very interesting, very original. He looks more aquatic then your original sketch, but your body design could change that. I also think Fellah's idea about the teeth is a good one.
I'll be keeping an eye on this one. Great work so far :bounce:

Thanks for the comments everyone! I changed the upper eyelids, though you can't really tell from these angles. The original idea was to have them be big to keep blown sand from getting in his eyes (like a camel). They did make him look a bit girly, though, so they've been toned down.

I've put off refining the teeth until I can get the body shape sorted out, then I'll have to detail up the whole thing. :wip:

This is the first pass at the body shape. I was trying for an alligator/newt combo, but instead it looks more like a bull dog. Any suggestions on how to make it better?....Please? :D

Haha, your right, he does look like some kind of mad scientist dream, the bulldogfish. :p

If your going for something newtish, try making the legs about half as skinny and angle his feet out about 45 degrees.

Yep, cool model. You could add those droopy thingies around the body too - that would be cool..

Hey Pearson! I've been looking for your model. Looking good so far. Lookin forward to seeing what you're up to with this. Great that you can keep the head like the sketch. I can't offer any ideas on the body. Sorry! You've probably made changes by now anyways.

Sorry guys! I didn't mean to leave this thread for so long, but work has been pretty hectic. Milestones always mean frantic cludges that take a few days to repair after the fact. [sigh]

Anyway, this weekend I did do a little work on this. Still not happy with it; every cool idea I try to put in here doesn't end up anywhere close to as cool as I wanted it to.

Should I keep the ridge on his back? Any suggestions on how this could suck less? I think it needs some bump mapping and basic colors.

@My Fault - Thanks for the advice! I tried to make his legs look more like a crocodile, but they didn't really turn out. Probably scrap them and build new ones.

@Halsu - Yeah, I need to make the body look like it belongs with the head...those dangly things should definitely have some influence. Thanks!

@Gamoron - Thanks for the kind words! Wow, you really had to go digging to find my thread; it was on page 6 or so! Thanks for resurrecting it! :D

It very much reminds me of this (http://alieninstinct.homestead.com/files/scavenger_done.jpg) lowpoly model I did recently. Cool character.

pearson

@lonewolf - Cool model! I think the similarity is in the shape of the top of the mouth, mostly. I didn't steal that from you, though, I...uh, "borrowed" it from Ambient-Whisper's tutorial guy. Like that's any better! :D I'm glad you think he's a cool character!

Well, I was trying to render out some pics to show off the bumpmap textures I just made, but Maya keeps crashing. Stupid unsupported video card.

Sooooo, I did a screen capture instead to show a bit of the new changes to the geometry. This is the unsmoothed model.

BTW, this is my entire screen. I didn't crop it or anything. I really like this about Maya; I can turn off the title bar even! Sweet! All my menus pop up around where ever my mouse pointer is when I press the space bar.

Does anybody else run Maya like this? Everybody I've seen has all this junk on their screen that they don't need. Of course the real productivity booster for me is the PA style Marking Menus! (not as good as the real PA Marking Menus, though) That and custom MEL scripts tied to hotkeys. Makes it impossible to work on anybody else's machine, though. And if my userPrefs ever get hosed I'm dead :surprised (which is why I have them backed up, or course) :p

Thanks, Artifex! The head is the part I'm the happiest with. I really wanted to do a much more detailed version (creases, scars, etc.) but...

Thanks for the support!
