View Full Version : beast of burden - character - derwolpertinger
derwolpertinger 07-06-2002, 03:41 AM first of all i didn't want to participate in this month challenge due to my little amount of time and, that' the main reason, cause i'm not good in character modelling. this is gonna be my second character. ;) but then i thought-just don't care! it's the best way to learn it here!! so here i am with my first sketch.
plz tell me if you like it and if it is a beast of burden cause i didn't understand everything lidragon said in the challenge guidelines. when he has to carry something i gotta think about it. but i already thought about letting him carry a whole little village.
said enough now! :shame:

I think a village would be great! he looks quite mean! will he help the villagers out or torment them?:D
derwolpertinger
07-06-2002, 04:06 AM
well i don't think that he will help them out cause he's to mean for that. the fact is that there is a symbiosis between them. his diet is carnivore but cause he's that huge he would not be able to eat something cause he's damn slow. so the villagers hunt for him sometimes and feed him. on the otherside the villagers are safe cause no other dangerous animal comes close to this huge mean guy.
so that's the thing about them!:D
i'll start modelling tomorrow in the afternoon, i'm tired now and gotta slzZZzzzzz..

Brilliant idea! And your sketch looks great. Don't worry if you have little character modeling experience, we're all here to help each other out!
Hope to see more of this wip in the future :wip:

just started modelling half an hour ago-very basic render i know-just wanted to show you that it's going further ;). but now i gotta have a break-it's a hard modelling job me. :hmm:
derwolpertinger
07-06-2002, 04:06 PM
and here's another lil' update! :))
i can't tell you how much fun it is workin' on this cute little fella.

If this turtle-type BoB comes out half as good as your frog in the last challenge you've got nothing to worry about.
derwolpertinger
07-06-2002, 05:28 PM
thx zrO for encouraging me!! :)
...just worked on the legs the past hours. here they are. don't worry, in the final they won't be just mirrored for sure!:D
derwolpertinger
07-06-2002, 07:50 PM
last update for today and i probably won't have time to work on it the next 2 days. :(
just finished the rear/back legs. hmmmm......how is it called? rear or back legs?
ZrO-1
07-06-2002, 10:20 PM
you could call them rear legs or back legs either one works. I like the progress you have made. Only crit would be to possibly make the mouth a little more pointy like a turtle's beak.
derwolpertinger
07-06-2002, 10:51 PM
well thx for the info! :) well the head is veeeeery wip ;). the only things that are finished are the legs. everything else is just a quick polygonsetup. i'll work on the rest a lot. i'm really looking forward working on the head. this is gonna be fun!!:D - can't wait to be back at home and continue workin'.:bounce:
derwolpertinger
07-06-2002, 10:52 PM
damn...forgot to ask :D-what is a turtle's beak?
derwolpertinger
07-08-2002, 05:02 PM
i'm glad that i've found a little bit of time to continue modelling!:)
i only worked on the head and it is almost finished now. so what do you think of it? i can't go on modelling today because i got to much work to do. :(
so i hope to go on modelling in the next days. then i'll concentrate on making the body armor which is going to be placed on the neck of my cute little friend. :D

I like the progress on the face.
Yeah the cgTalk site was down for a while. It looks like they upgraded the graphics. Response times seem to be a bit faster as well.
derwolpertinger
07-09-2002, 05:43 PM
just added a few hairs. now i'm starting to model the body armour. the one you can see right now is pretty much just the basic shape. i'll add a whole bunch of details for sure!:D
derwolpertinger
07-10-2002, 02:20 AM
finally finished the body armour! :)
now i'll start on the village i think.
derwolpertinger
07-10-2002, 02:22 AM
this one was just a ten minute texture setup, so don't consider them to be final in any way. :D i just couldn't await texturing. :)
ZrO-1
07-10-2002, 02:28 AM
Well my real crit with that last pic is with the textures but since you already said that they're temp I'll ignore them.
I love the armor shell on your BoB it really looks awesome. I think it might be good to bring the rear legs out a bit further on the body. Right now they sort of get lost under the shell.
derwolpertinger
07-10-2002, 02:30 AM
already thought the same about the leg issue. i'll fix that tomorrow. gotta sleeeeeeep now.:D

nice...very unique...I like the addition of the hair...great touch...I agree with ZrO-1 it would be great to see more of the back legs...or maybe more of the back feet! keep it up!

07-10-2002, 07:13 AM
just wanted to have your opinion. well the following pic is just a very rough 3d sketch to show you what i am after. do you think it is a good idea? i also thought it would be maybe better if the houses kinda like grow out of the back of the BoB. so that the villagers build their houses from the material the back is made of. or dou you think that village idea is crap? plz just tell me!:D
derwolpertinger
07-10-2002, 07:13 AM

07-10-2002, 07:47 AM
LMAO!!!
Dude that's great! Hahaha it's like a little renesance village on its back. I love it
thats awsome, i love the idea. howd you do the hair, did you just model it on?
Pancreas
07-10-2002, 08:35 AM
The village on shell idea is GREAT, just think on a night image, the creature walking through the jungle, and the shiny town lanterns, the tiny windows illuminated... etc.
To give more the look of a small village make a church tower, with clock and everything, and take over all the shell with houses. Don´t forget chimneys.
Just follow your sketch and it will look amazing.
derwolpertinger
07-10-2002, 09:01 AM
@kzo--> yes the hairs are modelled
@pancreas-->a night scene is areally cool idea. i had a pic in mind where the BoB just comes out of some water whicj is in the forest-i can't remember the word now ;(. and the back is still in the water and the front is on the muddy land. and there is some fog. these illuminated windows and lanterns will look great hopefully. :) now i hope that i can exactly realize the scene i have in mind right now. well i'll try and do my best. btw. thx for all your c&c.
 WOW!!!
This looks GREAT!! Very organic and threatening. Did u do the hair with Hair department? I´d really like to see a wire with no sub-d. Possible?
derwolpertinger
07-10-2002, 10:59 AM
i made the hair with solidspline-i'll post a wireframe later
derwolpertinger
07-10-2002, 01:33 PM
man, this is gonna be a bunch of work to do. i finished the church a few minutes ago. and i gotta build a lot of other houses and things. but it's the 10th - that's gonna be enough time-i think so. :)

07-10-2002, 03:02 PM
This is getting to be a beautifull work. Congrats!! But remember! Textures aren't necessary. :)
derwolpertinger
07-10-2002, 03:20 PM
hehe-good aspect ragnarok-but i don't even think about texturing cause i think that the modelling i still have to do will eat up most of the time left. but i will texture everything for sure-but after the deadline..i guess.
This is freaking cool. Great idea, great concept and great work.
I would only say that the texture on it´s skin is getting a little difficult to see the geometry.
Gooood work.:wip:
damn thats a great idea and a great model :applause:

i have an idea about the village. the shell could be coverd in moss and the settlers could build there houses in to the moss partle to act as a foundation for the structures. sounds tough though

but the problem you already mentioned would be that i yet can't imagine how to realize the moss. but i'll try it somehow.

What would really be cool for a short movie is start off on the inside of the house, a creature sleeping. Then all of a sudden, EARTHQUAKE! Which knocks him out of bed. Then he looks out his window to see the sky wobbling around, which makes him get motion sickness. As he wakes up, goes outside, the camera zooms out to show your creature just waking up and starting to walk around.
:-)
cool job there. :-) loving it!

also another great idea!! but then i'll need a new comp and a lot more animation skills! :)
derwolpertinger
07-10-2002, 10:53 PM
last one for today! finally! i've added the house on the left. unfortunately can't add too much detail to the houses cause my comp is really slowing down right now! :annoyed: but i think that the kind of low poly character of the houses is quite alright cause they will be seen in the final from a greater distance. now i really wanna sleep..didn't sleep last night though....cu tomorrow guys!
Great job bud! I especially like that you got time to texture it, looks great, look forward to seeing you complete that town!! Keep the updates coming!

Computer slowing down eh? Even if you were hide some objects or X-ref them? Maybe that'll help with your computer slowing down when you're trying to do stuff?
I myself need to upgrade my CPU.. which involves getting a new mboard... Ram.... CPU.... computer case.... wait, that's an entire new computer! :-P
I'll just salvage what parts I have on my current computer to add into the new one.
Awesome job on the church. :-)
You should learn animation though. It would really be cool to see that idea I gave come to life.

Cool..... very cool... at first I thought it was gross... but very cool.... suggestion..... and I know everyone probably has thought of this... make the front house a castle or spire with lots of stone detail... and these other houses sub that one.... and it could be more convincing if you tiered his shell with rock walls, like people have gone in and terraformed the poor critter..... just an idea....
derwolpertinger
07-11-2002, 01:59 AM
hey first of all thx for all your c&c!
@Thesel: well, i hope that i'll have the time to texture it before the challenge ends. but if not it will be textured after the deadline!! i can swear! ;)
@ nightfox: ehhmm...what is x-ref? and i sure will start learning to animate things in the near future, but i first gotta buy a new damn fast computer. :buttrock:
@ Beroc-LOD: i like the castle idea pretty much and you were wrong, no one else has mentioned that yet! did you mean like an ancient castle which has stone walls sorrounding all the "normal" buildings? hmmm...pretty cool idea again...well i'll seee what i can do! :)
NightFox
07-11-2002, 04:06 AM
X-ref is from 3DsMax... you just make the objects as seperate files then have them reffered to by the main model that you're creating.
I dunno. I think just hiding parts of your model (ie: Houses, the well, church, etc) could help ya out on the slowness of your computer.
Anyways, What you got under your hood that's runnin so slow? on what software proggy?

07-11-2002, 04:33 AM
Derwolpertinger, that village is looking really really really awesome! I don't have any crits for you becaus I like everything about the village. As far as plants and stuff: I'd say forget about them for now...leave them for the very last thing you do. You might not even need them once you finnish building the village and refining the beast.
derwolpertinger
07-11-2002, 12:53 PM
@nightfox: i'm using a G4 400 with 448 mb ram and an ati 128 rage card. and i'm workin' with cinema 4d xl, which is pretty fast normally-it's just my comp that's too slow. :( but i'm already saving money for a few months so i hope that i can buy me a new one in the near future. :D the other problem is that i yet don't really know what computer i'm gonna buy. i love macs but heard that the pc's are about 1/3 faster than the macs now. so i gotta think about that.
getting better every day - i really dig the village!!!:buttrock:

i f you wonder why there are no more updates today, i can say that i am currently refining and optimizing the village. better i'm lowering the polygoncount-it was much too high. and i'm already feeling that this was the main thing that slowed my comp down. :)

here's a minor update-not very significant-i just refined the buildings. i even could come up with the half polygon count!:) the environment is just temporary, just added for fun.:p now i'm leaving home for 2 days, so the next updates can probably be seen on saturday. i'll buld then the castle walls. :D
so on....
derwolpertinger
07-13-2002, 03:52 AM
finally i'm back at home and had a bit of time before i go to bed now. i tweaked some things , like the door aof the church, decreased the polygon count again, added a platform on one house, added two benches and a barn. i'll continue tomorrow. :)

07-13-2002, 03:56 AM
Still looking good. But for some reason it looks more like a miniature village rather than a gigantic beast.
derwolpertinger
07-13-2002, 04:00 AM
well i think that's obvious cause if we would live on a gigantic beast we would also be miniature. that's all relative. i think it's gonna be fixed when i add the environment later. like very small tree's compared to the BoB and other stuff.
well, we'll see!:D
eirenicon
07-13-2002, 04:08 AM
I suggest changing the camera aperture so that it's more orthographic. That will give it more of a distant look. Also, dramatic angles are a big part of making it look huge, but of course that will come later.

07-13-2002, 05:11 AM
Coming along nicely! As far as scale goes, the rocks around him are what throw it off for me. They are too large. But as you said the environment is temporary ;) I can't wait to see the rest of the village!

Sorry... got tied up doing my beast....
an ancient castle will work just fine it, I am thinking terraces though... it would lend to idea that people arent living on a completely round shell... more belivable.... as if living on a turtle can be believed in the first place...:D
Very nice work btw.....
derwolpertinger
07-13-2002, 10:08 PM
downtowns is almost done now!! :D
i've added a new builing on the right side and created several bump maps for the stones the roof, wood and the ground. i'm not sure if i will use them cause it was said: bumpmaps are allowed when it is impractical to model something. well i know that my textures are allowed so far but i don't think that it will look good when there's a bumpmap on the wall and no bump for exaple on the doors. i mean that the things in the scene won't fit together very wel then. or what do you think.
btw. the textures are not final as they are. i'm going to refine things on them.

07-13-2002, 10:51 PM
awesome stuff man!!! I can't beleive how good this looks! Your last challenge piece was really good, but nothing hinted you had such great skills as this. I want to give you some constructive crits, but I honestly don't see anything I don't like or doesn't work. Everything so far looks incredable. I guess the only thing I'd mention is that all those awesome bump maps on your buildings could turn into noise when you pull the camera back to show the whole beast.
derwolpertinger
07-14-2002, 03:11 AM
thx for your praise zro-1! but honestly i have to say that me myself can't believe what i'm doing here either. :) i would have never imagined to do something like this a few months ago. that's pretty cool.:D
unfortunately -as you mentioned- the nice bump maps turn into an undefinable noise if seen from a greater distance. :( i have to fix that somehow. at least here's the last render for tonight. more buildings and the surrounding walls hopefully come up tomorrow.

I was just curious the scale of your beast? are those houses life size or do little people live in them? maybe you could add some rope ladders hanging down off the side of your bob...oh and do these people in this town control where the Beast goes? or does he just wander around where ever? I really like where you are taking this....keep going!
derwolpertinger
07-14-2002, 02:55 PM
hey berzerker-i yet don't know exactly how the size of the villages is going to be. but the BoB will defietly be huge compared to them-and the surrounding environment will also be very small-like trees etc. the ladder idea is also a cool one, already thought about that-but i 'll add the surrounding walls first-then i'll see how i can add some construction which the villagers help to climb onto the beast. and, no the villagers can't control where the BoB is going. it's kinda like the earth for them moving through the universe. :)

07-14-2002, 09:35 PM
This is looking really really awesome..can't wait to see what's next.
Actually when you talked about the wall, had kind of a cool notion like maybe some people in the village don't know what really goes on, have never left the beast, that kind of thing..but that would have to be some kind of massive city for that I think.
Anyway great concept and excellent execution..rock on. :buttrock:

damn-my computer finally turned into a beast of burden which has to carry heavy loads of a lot of polygons. :( cause he doesn't not like to carry a lot of things he's slowing down more and more and mo.........:annoyed:
actually it turned out to be impossible now to model the rest, for example more houses, in the main BoB scene. so i gotta model the new stuff in new files and then finally paste the models into the main BoB file. that sucks hard!!
---now i thought that there are also a lot of criminals livin'n in that small village so they needed to have a prison. :) here it is:

derwolpertinger
07-15-2002, 05:37 PM
ok nothing fantastic to show- just a basic shape and i 'd like to hear your opinion before i go any further. i'll be adding a lots of details to the wall for sure and the two towers are just placeholders for the towers i'll model then.
so can i go on? :D
ZrO-1
07-15-2002, 05:46 PM
Two crits on the wall: I wouldn't make it so tall. I think it hides too much of the back. You really want to show that the village is built on the beast's skin, and not on something on the beasts skin. Also I would make the wall more 'stepped'. I say look at some pics of the great wall of China to get ideas.
I do like the wall idea. It could add interest to the border between the village and the beast. I would just make it smaller. it demands too much attention right now.

well-i didn't want to work on the wall anymore for now. i just wanted to do something different. so i worked on the bob's texture. there is no colour map on the bob. it is a plugin which generates the colour by shooting rays from polygon surfaces and then calculating the distance between them. if this is not allowed plz tell me. then i'll remove it. according to the texture: what do you think of the colour? and i also thought about giving the head and the place where the village is placed on different colours/bumps. so what do u guys think?
btw. i think that i should lower the height of the bump map on the head.

Wow, das sieht echt heiss aus! :airguitar
Definitely something very different and highly original looking IMHO. Love the gothic touch!
The only thing I can find that looks a bit "off", would be the claws, they don't look quite as well as the rest yet, not as natural. They especially stand out in the textured renders, but also look a bit artificially attached (rather than naturally growing out of the foot) in the untextured renders, maybe its the lack of more defined toes? Other than that incredible work! :)

@ scorpio: yes i think the back-where the village is-is going to be graslike. and the rest, well yet i don't know how i'll texure it. we'll see. but a different colour would be good as i think.
now here's an update again. added the backdoor, ladders at the towers and refined the wall(made it look harder). but cause my neck, wrists and eyes really hurt now i'm taking a short break from my BoB. next updates can be expected on thursday. so on :)
wow, the design and model is great!
keep up the good work

back at home! :D
earlier in this thread someone mentioned that the horns at the feet does not look like they are really growing out of them. he was right, that looked like crap! :(
so i did a lot of tweakin' on them. i like them much better now. additionally i 've created the texture for the horns.
--but there's anannoying issue i gotta mention here. at the beginning of the challenge i read through the challenge guidelines and also read "must have a harness". i did not understand this word and thought"ahh i'll gotta watch out what this word means". unfortunately i forgot that!! damn! now i got a problem cause my BoB obviously needs a harness but as it wasn't in my thoughts while modelling the whole creature i gotta think about it and how i can realize this.
well anyway here's the update:
ZrO-1
07-19-2002, 01:43 AM
Simple, stick a mouth-piece in the beast's mouth and have the harness run up to the two towers by it's sholderblades. They can be control towers for steering the beast.
derwolpertinger
07-19-2002, 01:50 AM
thx a lot zro-1!!!
nothing more to say now.....
derwolpertinger
07-19-2002, 03:45 AM
hey last render for this day. and just one to get your all opinion. i quickly did a 3d sketch of the harness. it is some metal rings of different scale the villagers pierced into the BoB's face. there are some chains or ropes attached to the rings which lead to the 2 towers where (again 2 :D) villagers steer the BoB. so what do you think?

07-19-2002, 11:15 AM
WOW...how did i missed this one?! :) very nice & unique IDEA/MODEL/SCENE/RENDER/...
u rock man
derwolpertinger
07-19-2002, 12:23 PM
thank you!!
well i really started modelling the harness a few moments ago.
i will add more chains of different scale and i'll make bigger holes in the skin for the rings. hehehe, poor BoB!:D
Davorell
07-19-2002, 04:23 PM
Wow, she sure is pretty.
How bout a little bit of haze, slight bit of fog to get that sense of scale. ( in the final render of course)
It sure is origional, I love it:thumbsup:
derwolpertinger
07-19-2002, 06:41 PM
so as you said-in the final render. but i had this fog idea in mind since i started this piece :D
i just hope that my comp can handle it .:)
derwolpertinger
07-20-2002, 12:53 AM
here's another update for you guys!:)
i worked a bit on the textures but they are still not final. gotta tweak some things. - i've added the chains and the plates with the rings that are attached to the outer shell. the chains lead towards the two towers that i've not rendered here cause of time saving. :D i don't yet know if i will add more chains-there are already manymany polygons that are slowing down the work. :( but i'll see so here are the pics:
derwolpertinger
07-20-2002, 12:54 AM
and a closeup render:
ZrO-1
07-20-2002, 01:23 AM
Hey man, That harness is looking kick-a$$!!
I really like what you've done with the chain style and mouth piercings. I think the only thing that I don't like too much is the texture on the beast's skin. It looks too 'fuzzy' IMHO. Other than that I love everything.
DKScully
07-20-2002, 08:55 AM
Are this thigs wings or an armor... It would be grat if the were wings.. so it could fly¡¡¡¡¡ COuld you pose it with open wings... :-)))) A flying city... great... :-))))))
I like the chain on it... I like it...
derwolpertinger
07-20-2002, 12:25 PM
thx for the comments guys! :) it is gettin' less comments here at the end of the challenge time-like always :(. but that's obvious when so many people participate in the challenge i think. the people have seen enough BoBs for now. :)
@DKskully: these are no wings, sorry to disappoint you. and they are modelled as armor so i'd have to change the wall, too. and that's not too much time left here cause i gotta model other things, too. but cool suggestion anyway.
derwolpertinger
07-20-2002, 06:32 PM
finally finished the harness. well not totally. it is just mirrored at the moment. i'll change that for sure. i also worked on the metal textures. and still have to create a better skin texture for the BoB. that's it-so how do you like it? :)
derwolpertinger
07-20-2002, 06:38 PM
and a close up render:
ZrO-1
07-20-2002, 06:39 PM
How do I like it?
Well, I think it's terrible, everything about it sucks. JUST KIDDING :p
:D LOL
Seriously, this just keeps getting better and better. The new yellow-green texture you have on the skin now is a big improovement over the dark-green version. You're definetly headed in the right direction.
I'm not sure if you've done this already, but the only suggestion I'd make is to enlarge the two control towers a little to make them more eye-catching. I know that they are not in the last couple of renders, but looking back at some of the earlier stuff, I think they might need to be a bit more "beefy".
Jacko Cohen
07-21-2002, 01:44 AM
cool character.
looks like a pewter miniature model.
dunno if that was intentional but it's cool
derwolpertinger
07-22-2002, 02:02 AM
i got my hands on the skin texture again and made it more reptilian like.
i gotta say that i also added a colour texture to the skin now. the eye tex and the one of the outer shell still need some work. btw. all the textures you can see are procedural ones. now i gotta start modelling a character that is steering the BoB. damn-yet have no idea how it will look like.
so here are three pics. only one with the chains due to rendertime issues.

Amazing Concept!!!! But , however any people could think that it is a saucer ^ _^

07-24-2002, 05:34 PM
i did a quick sketch of how the character on the BoB might look like. it is a kind of alligator but it can also breath under water. i don't know if ishould model it. do you think it's good for the whole scene?
ahh and btw. i'll also maybe add some clothes or armor to the char
ZrO-1
07-24-2002, 07:35 PM
Hey D, Nice drawing for the secondary character. I think it would be cool to see a couple of them in the town...maybe one or two in the jail and one or two in the control towers but that's pro'lly about all. I wouldn't bother adding in lots of detail to this new character because he would be so small in the scene....unless of course you plan on also doing a few close-up shots of the village. I guess just keep in mind the size that the gator-man will be in your final piece and model accordingly.
Just my 2 cents :D ;)
derwolpertinger
07-24-2002, 08:48 PM
so i've started on the character-but decided to make a totally different one. here's the start-still a lot to do. btw. the head is going to be a sort of dino style head.

I totally understand what you are saying Derwolpertinger. I had the same problem with my cowboy. However you are doing an excelent job with your dino-man. I think it looks really awesome, and the muscles look pretty cool like they are. I like that they don't look entirely human. I think it's great.

hey, got the head finished!:bounce: now i'll add a few clothes to this guy. yeah just a few cause otherwise modelling the muscles would have been really dumb!:D and he will also be wearing some rings and chains around his neck and arms, legs.....then i'll rig him and when i got enough time left paint a bumpmap for some wrinkles. so here we go:

I'm not sure about the abdomen. I know the muscle structure is supposed to be a bit alien, but they seem a bit too protruding.
The rest of it looks great! Really top notch!
derwolpertinger
07-29-2002, 03:12 AM
well the abdomen part is going to be covered by cloth. :D you are right anyway-i did not spend so much time modelling it cause i knew that it can't be seen in the final. and about the muscles, hmm i want them like they are. never done muscles before so i want my first ones to be reeeaaallly strong- :) -and as you said they should be alien/dino like.

Great work! I can't wait to see the villager in it's new home :D
derwolpertinger
07-30-2002, 07:17 PM
so here's the first pic of the BoB with everything i modelled so far(yes, except the villager;) ). i had to optimze the polygon count really a lot cause my comp crashed all the time i tried to render this scene. i killed a whole bunch of polys. not very exciting work-i can tell you:shame: . i'm glad that it renders now without any problems. i'll probably kill the texture on the BoB's head -don't like it much. so i am going to paint a bumpmap instead of using procedurals for this. you know, some wrinkles and stuff. next pic probably includes the villager the.
http://www.derwolpertinger.de/bob/bob-48.jpg

hey finally finished the texture on the head and also got my BoB rigged now.
i'll post the rigsetup screenies tomorrow. i'm tired now. :) ahh and the village isn't included again due to - yes you're right :D - time saving issues. but could you plz give me some advices on the lighting. i think it looks crap right now. and obviously i don't wanna destroy my models with the lightin'. and the eyes are not final in any way, too. don't look at them. :) or at least try to. so until tomorrow i guess:
http://www.derwolpertinger.de/bob/bob-49.jpg
forgot that: no colour maps in this pic-just one solid colour and a bumpmap.

07-31-2002, 03:07 PM
i changed the lighting and i am currently rendering the scene with radiosity. it already renders since 9 hours and i think that there are still about 10 hours to come.:annoyed: i gotta tweak the settings a bit. so i just can show you the BoB's rig here:

derwolpertinger
08-02-2002, 01:41 PM
hey back at home now.:D i worked a lot on the lighting and came up with this night full moon version. i rendered it with 5 lights and radiosity. the render took 18 hours. so i gotta fake the radiosity which makes the rendertimes decrease immediately. i am also rendering a day version at the moment. i'll post it his evening. may the character will be included then, too.
http://www.derwolpertinger.de/bob/bob-51-h.jpg
derwolpertinger
08-02-2002, 04:10 PM
ok. now i've changed the bumpmap on the BoB's head slightly and i've chosen better antialiasing settings for the render. also i have not rendered it with radiosity but faked it with about 10 lights. this version is supposed to look like a sunset. i hope it does look like it though. :D so which version do you like better? or do you think that both version kinda suck? :)
but here's a promise: next render WILL include the villager!!(or some villagers :))
now plz gimme your opinions guys!

Mucho niceness.
You're planning to do more with the environment? Ie. not a big brown ground-texture :) It'll look aaawweesome with small trees and a lake or something around it. Hey maybe it could be drinking from a lake? I'm guessing here it'd drink pretty much the entire lake by the time it's done, but still, just a thought to an environment..
When the contest is over you'll simply have to render this out in some large-ass resolution so we can really zoom in on things and see all the cool details.
Again, very nice work. If anything I think the armor looks a bit "hi I'm a noise-material", perhaps dents and scars and..spears? Idunno, just pondering if spears and whatnot (boulders, black fire-burns from fire-arrows) from countless wars would be visible on it :)

08-02-2002, 08:56 PM
hey gaggle:
thx for the comments and crits. about the environment. well, i would love to add an environment. don't even think that i will leave it like it is! :D the first problem is that there is not so much time left till the challenge's deadline. actually the major problem is my computer. it is just too slow for such complex things. the scene with the BoB is already built out of 7 different files where i copy and paste things into the "final" file that is rendered then. well i am already saving money for a new one so i hope that i can built an environment soon. and for the outer shell's material/texture, i wqas also not very satisfied with it, just needed that crit here ;) . so here's the new one which is much better in my opinion.
@ artifex: yeah, also thought that i'd go for th moonlight look.
derwolpertinger
08-03-2002, 06:10 PM
and here's the villager on the tower. it was pretty hard to position him with the chain. now i gotta place the other villager on the other tower and then i'll go for the final render. i really gotta hurry up now. sorry for this bad render but i had to save some rendertime. :D
well i'm goin' on now...

well here is the other character on the tower. :D finally!
but i got two important questions.
do you think i should add at least some rocks to the environment? or is the environment not so important. i just don't know. and it would be cool if someone could tell me when exactly when this challenge ends. thx ;)
