Ok fellow artists,

I have thought long and hard, I went through a lot of ideas. Life forms with military hardware fused to there bodies, Life forms being put through torture an existance of horror. Also life forms who have been turned into life force batteries and even a person turned into a car.

I came to the idea of doing an elf-like being who wants to fly, Like a bird or a faerie. Who has travelled to the wizard of the woods to undergo the cosmetic transformation of lightening her bone structure and to have the fabricated wings fused into her skeleton. A somewhat painfull procedure, but with a few postion wipped up by the wizard to make it more bearable.
The frame of the wings are made of a light weight elven steel which is hollow within and a highland Mystic oak. The skin of the wings are made from the saliva of a ground dwelling spider which is mixed with the sap of a worm tree. Now she can fly like a bird...

I hope i am on the right track, my interpretation of this challenge is of a Machine into flesh.

This is the next step to get the shape of the wings right, I was going for 3 on each side but have decided to go for 2. There is a knuckle joint in each wing.

I have found this reference pic of a dragonfly for the details.

Here i have found a good pic for reference, I am going for a transparent film for the wing skin.

Very cool idea... personally I like the first drawing where the wing connects with two parts instead of two separate parts... if you know what I mean. Looking good

element5
03-19-2004, 01:52 AM
Thanx muyyatin,

I do like the first one too that would be more like a butterfly, but when i started looking at practical looking designs the 2 seperate ones won. The first design is too bulky and when the wings retract down when not in flight sticks out too far. With the 2 seperate ones the wings can go down flush along side the figure. With 2 inderpendant wings makes better control and stability like a dragonfly......I know i think too much and it is only fantasy LOL.

Thanx again for ur comment

Ok here is my concept sketch. I want her to have pale skin and blonde hair and green eyes. The look of the metal in the wings will be like jewellery and i want it to have engraving. There will be inlayed wood and gem stones imbedded. I would like the texture of the wings to be like a stain glass look. The image is of an elf-like creature and has recently had wings attached there will be stitching and bruising and maybe a touch of purple blood.

Well thats the outline....

This is the ine work mainly maping out and refined lines, The wings being the main focus. I am using a Wacom drawing tablet and I tell u that makes drawing so much easier and faster. Now on to the colour.....
Comments welcome :-)

not to sound like a dirty old man but it it would be nice to see more of her and how the wings incorporate into the chest. And you're right the Dragonfly is one of the best flyers around. A couple of questions are you going for a more 3d rendered look or a more flat shaded look? and iare you going for a more realistic proportions or a more animated look?
Anyway, good start keep it coming.
Ciao!

looking good southerner  (not intentionally offencive since we are from the same southern state).

i love the section of the wings that connect to the body, they appear sturdy and soforth. i like the wing texture too. And i agree with Shafeek Amiruddin, it'd be cool to see more of her, maybe shes got more enhancments! and im SERIOUSLY not talking bout her fun bags...

she might have liitle stabilizing wings or somthing...

its Good though... im keen to see further development.

Hiya guys....

Shafeek Amiruddin
The wings are attached to the shoulder blades and spine. I am sorry but the design didn't include her breasts...LOL But I will give her a boob lift so it is in the frame. ;)
I want to go for a realistic but fantasy look, i want to do her skin pale and her body wafe-like. I am really keen on manga-style drawing but trying to do my own style.

Eupee
Hey there again fellow southerner, The view of her is totally intentional I wanted to focus in on a part of her and leave some to your imagination.

Thanx for ur comments and i think we all love BOOBS lol

I can see that I am starting the colour now and i will adjust it as I go, I also noticed that the forground arm is a little thick.

I agree, this is looking really nice and I love the way you're referring to existing "natural" sources. the detail is fabulous so I'd like to see a more realistic interpretation of the girl... and yes i think it would look great with more body aswell.

good luck!

Here I go starting to do th colour now.

I thought i would start with the eyes and work out.

element might I suggest giving her chin more definintion. The alignment of her nose and lips indicate one plane but the chin curves or disappers from that plane I guess maybe it just seems a little round.
Keep it up. like the use of reflective highlights form the wings.

Face....I have adjusted the eyes, nose and mouth and I am going for 2 light sources. Fireplace and window (daylight)

Body..... Just putting in block colours to figure out lighting. I thinned out the foreground arm. I am also adding more detail where the wings go in through the skin.

looking good :) I like the details on the wings!
One thing bothers me: her jaw seems to be too rounded, I'd cut it a bit from the chin till the intersection of the hairstrand next to her ear..
Good job though!

Just starting the background, I am goig for a wallpaneled room with a window to the right and a fireplace to the left. There will be a firgure(wizard) looking through the doorway behind her. The whole background will be blurred out so the girl and her wings will be the main focus.

The Tattoo...... I am glad u asked.
I am a big 5th Element fan, hence my nickname Element5. I designed the Tattoo to compliment the piece, There are the 4 elements and in the center represents "Love". The leaves stretching up for "Growth" and the dagger shaped roots for "Strength"

I'm participating in the 3D contest, and my idea also focuses on a girl with wings...

I'm deep in the modeling process, so you can drop by my thread and tell me what you think about my piece... I like your style.

Ok i havn't got to the wing supports, I was not happy with the wings. I have played around with some lighting. I have also done somemore work on the lighting on the skin. Light from the fireplace to the left and light from the bay windows to the right. Its getting there.... What do u think???

Thanx MrFreeman and SirGandolf for ur kind comments.
I have tried to be consistant with my progress and I have spent a bit of time on the wings because they are the main focal point. I think i have been successful in getting the glassy looking wings and i feel the blue tint makes it.

Wings are looking super!

It also took me few of your evolution steps to notice that there is a weird man standing in the door opening.

But, but, i really think you should fix her face to look more normal. Do you agree? If u deal sweet and real looking face this piece will be great  I hope to see the rest of the pic at the wings quality.

Cool wings element5 no crit just a :
the stain glass image has a good metal and crystaline look to it and her expression says "Hum, their added":) The un-powered image
The image with the greenish lights also has a good metal and crystaline her expresssion (though the same) says "Hum" as they powered up.:)
If going with a just powered up imagemaybe the greenish lights just on her and wings and reg lights on the backgroud giving the effect that the nano-materials in her and them (the wings) are asorbing the light (and other engery sources) for engery. no crit just a story line:)

londero : I agree with more lighting in the eye, looks alittle flat....Thanx.

Falcor_ : I was o the floor with laughter about your comment about the wierd man...... He is the wizard checking on his patient LOL. I am not sure what u ment about her face. Did u mean more real? I have done her face to look unusual- elf like and i love big eyes :-) I also tried to get an Angelina Jolie look...

SirGandolf : I like thinking thanx, I am very happy with how the wings turned out i was a bit worried. As for nano technology these wings are magic powered being set in a Middle earth fantasy world.
I came to the idea of doing an elf-like being who wants to fly, Like a bird or a faerie. Who has travelled to the wizard of the woods to undergo the cosmetic transformation of lightening her bone structure and to have the fabricated wings fused into her skeleton. I like the fact that the machine element of the image needs no explanation, very clear cut and simple. Good references defiantely make a huge difference, and it shows in your image. Well done.
