I could not pass this one up. I've had a concept kicking around that's perfect for this. I'll sketch out a concept tomorrow at work.

I've had this idea kicking around for a few years. This challenge is perfect for me to finally model it.
My idea is to step away from the modern vision of cybernetics and go old fashion. This character is a blacksmith that is augmented with 1800 era technology (the style has been referred to as Steampunk). Steam powered pistons are what gives this gentleman the strength to create the massive machines that his job requires. I really can't wait to get this guy finished.
There will be more concepts coming soon, with details of all the mechanics and interesting bits

What artists, if any, influenced this style? I'd love to check them out.

My influence at the time of drawing was Gauss, a modeller for quake 3. My art style doesn't suit the steampunk look as much as his does.

But his work was only a stepping stone for my design, and I would like to hope that my skills have increased since I first came up with this concept :D

It looks good, surely it is gonna be a great model. Good theme.
Skill is very important, but it is important not to get crazy to much with the technical part. What really matters is the final result and in art everything is in the details.Keep it going as soon as posible This is the way you get the most fun.
Skill comes alone with practice, there was a time that I was over obsesive with and I decide not to thing so much about it.It is better to practice, practice and practice...

Yeah, cool sketch you have there. I'm a big fan of the steampunk style. Love the character and the pose.
slightly off topic, but did you know the dude that did Akira is releasing a new Anime called SteamBoy, set in London circa 1800's. Looks crazy, heaps of steam clouds and 3D effects.

Simple sketch, I had to get something down on paper so I could finalize this aspect of the design. This engine is what powers all the pistons around the body. you can see where I have 6 leads coming off the sides, these are the hoses that attach to each piston.
The engine is attached to the shoulder blades by hinges, keeping most of the heat away from the back, and still allowing most movement for the character.

Was trying to figure out a more efficient layout of the pistons to give increass mobility to the character. Also in the sketch is an idea for the hydraulic's connect to the engine.
