View Full Version : Beast of Burden - Character/contraption - moujot
moujot 07-05-2002, 11:57 PM Hello all
Well this is my first challenge and here are my first sketches for a beast of burden. You might notice the beast itself is much inspired by a Feng Zhu design (i hope it is ok if not i'll go for something else).
As for the little story, i think this beast is a reptile, quite gentle vegeterian, it lives in deserted areas, and is used by workers and miners to carry heavy loads of stuff, it is bigger in size than an elephant, has powerfull legs and can carry probably much - actually i'm still hesitating between a back harness to carry sort of baskets on the side or a cart.
there we go i shall post mesh shot soon

and another sketch

hey, your sketch is awesome. does look pretty Feng-ish though. it would be nice to see you exaggerate some areas to make it a bit more original. maybe changing the center of gravity (forward or backwards) could totally revamp the design.
still, anything inspired by Feng Zhu has gotta be wicked. can't wait to see it!

howdy opiate !
thanks for comment, i've come up with this one, please tell me what you think... i'm not quite sure this one can actually walk though..:hmm:
anyhow i might rather go for this one

then it'll probably drag a cart rather than carry stuff
btw, i just realized that the pieces of wood should pass in between its legs...

My first thought when I saw the concept was that it was a bird. What if you added wings to the back - perhaps hummingbird, super-fast type wings? Then the long arms could sag below holding the cargo.
Nice work! :D

here is one just for the sake of it

Man, that is really awesome. Such a cool design.

I really dig your new design...really glad you changed it so much.
the wings idea is a really good one for a creature like this. the wings would keep the main portion of the body up in the air, allowing the huge claws to grip the ground to move it along.
if you don't like the wings idea, you just need to watch out for a few balancing issues...but don't worry too much about it. just get this baby modelled!
oh, and it pleases me that this critter's a vege-letarian.

alright, thanks a lot for comments; i sure will give a try to some wings or ways to balance it.
glad you like it this way, opiate, actually i tend to like it too this way - here yet some more playing around

hey folks !
i've started a little modelling, and i'm working on the contraption, i'll post a sketch soon !

well i haven't had much time to work on it this week end, just some poly modelling, pulling out shapes and volume, but i've done a couple more sketches, and changed a couple things...
here is the beast now, changed a couple details, maybe it's a little more balanced now; it uses it's forearms to hold/pull the contraption, probably it leans forward a little while walking, i shall see about posing it later on...

here is a first contraption sketch, i'm not quite happy with the contraption' look yet, also the legs of the beast felt a little awkward, thus i changed position of the knees

and here comes the pic..

and here a better sketch (not that my drawing skills would make it better :hmm: )
the contraption is merely a leather skin tossed and sewn over wooden structure, much like a little house; they are sort of troleys and can be hooked to one another, forming a convoy (is that the word ?); the beast might be strong enough to pull like half a dozen troleys...
i'm not sure about the kites, i felt that the carts should not have wheels (go figure), and then thought about a suspended cart, but i don't know about kites or airships yet, i thought about airships but i think this has been used in a sketch already.
the beast's forearms shall be chained to the wooden pieces that hook on carts; also instead of a saddle i think it will have a harness with maybe some sort of flag or streamer (not sure of the word once again) - somehow i hope to make it look like a merchant's caravan or something...
here is the sketch, and i'd gladly hear some comments and crits !

The original art coming out on this challenge is really top-notch. Keep that work coming in Moujot!
very nice idea and sketch
but I would go for the vehicle with the wheels

Like I said earlier I really like this character design. I think the cart you made for it to pull is top-notch as well. Really nice designs there buddy.

thanks folks for comments
i'm sorry i have not had much time to work on it, here are some pics, the beast is still being shaped out, and the kite thing lacks some maps, it's all on its way !
about the contraption's wheel, i don't know excatly yet but i'm quite sure it won't have wheels :hmm:
i keep checking threads and this challenge is really cool and bringing some awsome work from everyone !!

well i don't have all the time i wish, so i can only work on this bits by bits, but it's coming along... know it still lacks many details and stuff, i've started contraption and harness things, but not satisfied with yet.
here is a small update to show desired scale, and a little rigtest i've done for fun...
see the rigtest:

That's coming along very well. I was going to say that I didn't like the beak you had put on the beast but I saw in the last pic that it's gone so I guess I don't have any other crits. The piece is coming along very well. I wouldn't worry about being slow. It's not about how fast you work but how well you work. And you're doing just fine.

I like the flow of development. It seems to grow like a foetus into a fully grown model! Very organic. :D
Oh, and the biped on the last image is a nice touch!

howdy folks !
well this challenge is coming to an end, and i've had much less time than i would even thought i'd have !
i will try to work as much as possible in the next few days, specially on contraption...
here is first a little sketch of how this beast could evolve, because also at once the idea of it sitting / hanging on trees was around..
moujot
07-31-2002, 09:38 PM
and here is a small update, much still needs to be worked on.
I was thinking of maybe it would have a horn/horns after all, or maybe just a start of a horn, kinda like a rhino's, but i don't know..
also i gave it an opposeable toe, i hope it give a little more power / thickness to the legs and toes, eventhought there are not really visible on the pic
more asap
