OK.... Point taken :D

Right now however, I'm off to bed... Five hours of texture adjustments and test renders powered by no less than three pints of coffee (really! I made it this morning and poured it into a huge soda bottle and kept it in the fridge until it was time to do some 3D...)

Anyways, I hereby promise to check through my subscribed threads tomorrow and supply some comments - but first some sleep.

No, wait, first a big test render of Bunnyman close to completion... Got eyes, fuzzy ears, lots of fixed textures and flaky paint jobs. Enjoy, or something!

Wahooow James!!!
Ears, neck's metallic tubes and abdomen machine parts are my favorits. Especially i like how the lights are playin on the neck tube!! Keep it up mate! But please be careful with too much coffe and sleepless hours....I know am also a "coffe dependent":buttrock:
BTW are there coffe flows in his tubes? :D

JamesMK
06-13-2004, 08:47 AM
Yup, the left abdominal pipe is for coffee....

- - - Next step will be to paint some gore/mess-maps for his skin, then do likewise for Echo, and finally make the environment and press the big render button.

I made some optimisations yesterday, mainly shader tweaks - among other things I removed the translucency shader from the hair on the ears as it seemed to crash the render (actually, it's the first time C4D really crashed on me, so it was clear that shader had to go) I simply replaced it with a bitmap in the luminance channel... doesn't look the same, but totally decent, so I'll keep it. I also removed partial transparency on some tubes, mainly because I noticed it didn't really add anything to the result except for being incredibly slow to render.

Another REALLY lame thing I discovered was an ambient occlusion shader in the diffusion channel of my metal materials... I probably must have put it there at an early stage, and since I made all the other metals by copying the first one, I got this mistake copied as well.... I don't understand why I put it in the first material at all really, since the diffuse part of metals is quite insignificant anyway... Anyway, this had slowed down my previous renders quite a lot, for no good reason - the renders are, relatively speaking, blazing fast now without that.... ah silly stuff.... guess one would need some kind of spreadsheet mode to get a good overview on things like material channels and so on.... another story...

Very well... laters!

really cool bunny there...
especialy i like the metal on his belly and the yellow maps in front of it:)
Is he rigged up for animation BTW?

/me gets his nightmares of Rocky horror picture show back again.
 Great design on the bunny man! (no pun intended) Just one question - I've been ofline for quite some time now - so where did he come in?

 depending on what the other entries come out like, this is going to be tought for voting :hmm:

/me runs off to look at his motherboard again

Hey Hames,
the Bunnyman is looking really awesome!

I repeat looking at him and I am very imppresed!

I really like the pose you gave him too!

Great progress man!

JamesMK
06-13-2004, 11:42 PM
EmpY - Well, you too!

maurocor - Thanks a lot - you made quite a job on your entry, well done!

vincent_v - Thanks, well, he is rigged allright, but not really for animation. That would take a whole lot of more work. The rig is somewhat decent for stills posing, but that's about it.

SibSpi - Glad you like it!... sorry to hear about your comp, btw... and Bunnyman, well, he was in from the start really.... some sketch on page 2 or something... It was more or less just a joke from the beginning, but as it turned out I simply made him like that anyway

mikepol - Aw, good! If the impression lasts for repeated views, then I'm really happy about it. In fact, I prefer that over the usual "first impression rules"....

-
-
-

I've made some minor compositing tests, and everything seems to be A-OK.... I also built an environment, but it turns out that the idea I had for it sucked big time. It was great in theory, and looked OK on its own, but failed horribly when combined with Echo and the Bunnyman - so I need to rethink that... Thus, no update tonight... probably tomorrow instead.

Keep working y'all! :buttrock:

-OZ- - - - Ah, just finish your entry, and I promise not to kick you...... Thanks btw!

Dimitris - Yup. :buttrock:

EmpY - He he... I buy my rivets at the same store you know ;) ... but I'm not sure about "any background"... the first one I tried definitely didn't work. This one will however.

Been adjusting textures all night.... Before going to bed around 04:00, I batched two render jobs: Bunnyman and Background, both at final print resolution. Some stuff about that coming up below.... All that remains now is texture adjustments for Echo, and then render him too (that will be two layers, one for Echo alone and one for his groin drill).... then all should be set for compositing, post and the last flattening of layers this time around.

Background agree me... but only with DOF... cause the textures seems a bit coarse... or maybe it's due to the jpg...

Not too much work remain you now... it's good news :applause:

JamesMK

quite right - the texture on the central part has not quite got the required resolution, but once it's blurred it will not matter.....

Now in his final shape, with all environment maps replaced with real reflection instead. Since I couldn't render him together with the modeled environment, I made a little panorama texture (2000 x 1000 px) of the previously rendered background and mapped on a sky sphere object.

........and Echo in his final state. Environments replaced with reflections here as well, using the same method as for Bunnyman above.

I also needed Bunnyman to cast shadows onto Echo here. But they wouldn't really render together... my PC died. So I looked through the main keylight to see what I could delete from Bunnyman while maintaining the desired shadow.... stripped him from most stuff, then rendered him as a shadow caster, invisible to the camera, and without subdivision of course... it worked!

JamesMK
06-16-2004, 10:45 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/5/1704/1704_1087425900_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/5/1704/1704_1087425900_large.jpg)

The air hose connecting Echo and Bunnyman.... Rendered separately because of the insane level of detail I needed to get the proper displacement of this thing, (C4D only does geometry-based displacement) which all-in-all is just a simple sweep nurb with a procedural displacement map and some grit in the specular and reflection channels.

JamesMK
06-16-2004, 10:48 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/5/1704/1704_1087426131_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/5/1704/1704_1087426131_large.jpg)

So, slapping everything together here....

Most of the compositing was just simple layer masking using my rendered alphas.

I ended up leaving most of the colors and levels just as they were from the render, but made quite extensive changes to the background in order to provide maximum readability. Overall, the image is quite dark (since we're in a mine and all), but I still wanted it to be fairly easy to see what's in it.... The contrast between characters and background was my main concern.

Post-effects are limited to some blurring, sharpening, a bit of color dodge brushing to spice up minor details... that sort of thing.

Well, here it is....

I've got a list of surely more than two hundred things I'd like to fix/add/improve/tweak.... but there comes a time when it's time to submit... this is it. Hope ya like it!

The CGChallenge Spirit - - - it's all here... valuable prizes or not, doesn't make a difference, the helpful attitude demonstrated by all participants... we all want everyone to make the best possible final image, and we keep our fingers crossed that everyone will finish in time.........

To my special friends here, we had a lot of fun this time, didn't we? Aye!

Splendissimo!

The lighting made all the difference in visual impact, and combined with the (surprisingly) subtle background you ended up with a very, very strong image. Dark and twisted humour (a bunnyman? with bunny ears nailed to a helmet? groin attached machinery?) combined with a strong sense for modeling. All together a work worth getting drunk for!

I wish you all the luck in the votings, James!

James,

My old machine (Dual PIII 1GHz) and monitor ruthlessly ganged up on me, and refused to work at the same time, leaving my terror turkey tank teets up (if turkey had teets, of course, of course).

So, I've been spending the remainder of the contest building a new rig.

I splurged, and went dual Xeon 3.0. Since everyone seems to be jumping off Intel's cruise liner and clutching for Opterons, I was able to get a good deal.

Until, that is, I found out my stupid case is in danger of melting under the dual processor heat.

Oh, and the realization that Dual 3.0 Xeons aren't particularly faster in real-time work environments (in fact, I've convinced myself the old dual PIII's worked through LightWaves viewport faster).

These chips only render faster, at the cost of setting my toe nails on fire the second I enable Hyperthreading.

So, I'm about to buy a new, waaaay too expensive tower.

yak yak yak. . .

The bird will gobble again.

Thanks for the encouragement.

And may your new computer come free of charge and not double as a furnace. :)

Go get tanked.

James,

Though your entry is among the Elite, how long do you intend to wait before working through your list of enhancements and beginning the animation short?

Or does CGTalk already have you writing up the Making Of debriefing?

These characters only get better with repeated viewings. Great poses, and expressions. They must be made to sing, dance, and doodle in the mines  .

and regarding my previous post . . . rather than delete it, I'll just leave that as indisputable evidence to my ego that I am regularly a dysfuntional, pontificating knot head. :wavey:

Pay me no mind.

Now please complete this project. Your fans demand an encore.

JamesMK

Sachi - Thanks a lot for your words - It was painful to see you not being able to finish your entry, because I know it would have been an awesome piece of work.... later, I assume!

Ravioli - Ah, I rather enjoy reading about your overheated hardware, so there's no need to delete anything :D About my characters here, I do want to finish them up and make that animation.... There are so many ideas floating around about that song and dance act.... Next up however, I'll be busy for a couple of months making another music video VFX shot, which will be great fun. And to be honest, I'd rather not open up the Echo/Bunnyman scene files again for at least a few weeks... and I have to move them to a CDROM to free up some new project space on my undersized HD anyway :D - - But I'll get back to them after the VFX business for sure... And thanks again for your support; I find it most entertaining to read your posts, here and elsewhere... refreshing and congenial!

Some final notes on the composition

First of all, for the overall principle used to layout the final image, I chose to flimsily adhere to the rule of thirds.

As you know, this little "rule" states that you divide your image into 9 segments by imagining horisontal and vertical lines equally distributed over the picture area, then try to align the most important bits that you want
focus on to the areas where these lines intersect.

As illustrated below, this has placed Echo's right hand drill, his face, his hand on Bunnyman's shoulder and the mount for his groin drill roughly in the intersection areas marked with blue circles. Bunnyman himself is slightly offset, with his head to the right and above the closest intersection, while the lighting situation and what he appears to be looking at indicates a "hidden" intersection just outside of the image, but probably within that top-right area of interest.

http://w1.695.telia.com/~u69502813/noxit_composition/rule_of_thirds.jpg

You can also note an attempt to create an area of negative space to the
top-left side, as well as a frame, pushed to the background, created by the circular hatch/door/gateway in the dark behind them. There is also an uphill arching diagonal going from Echo's head, along the big tube and touching Bunnyman's ears as it bends its way towards the hidden top-right lightsource.

------------------------------------------------

Contrast and attention

The squint-test... To ensure the image is readable enough, with sufficient contrast between the interesting bits and the not-so-interesting bits - slapping a 10 pixel gaussian blur on the image reveals if the colors and shapes are distinct enough and whether there is enough partial focus rather than an evenly distributed mess of focal points.

The first example below, blurred with the original colors intact, show that it's still fairly easy to understand what I'm looking at. My main concern was to keep the heads and upper bodies easily readable.
While making the final adjustments to the composited image, I frequently made a flattened copy and blurred it like this to see what happened. As a result, the background layer got a rather massive make-over in several steps until I was happy with it.

http://w1.695.telia.com/~u69502813/noxit_composition/color_blur.jpg

Below: the same blur again, but now with color information discarded,
reveals that there remains a slight problem with the contrast between
Bunnyman's head and the background. I chose to leave that bit alone anyway, because the color contrast was sufficient, and relied on the weird nature of his ears to make a strong enough impact regardless of the lacking contrast in luminance.

http://w1.695.telia.com/~u69502813/noxit_composition/grayscale_blur.jpg

mention this:gah!
prelim:this just my rant as i think the vote system needs work.
and as always crapload of peeple-oids hang here and as i could'nt find a general gripe forum
..i may as well post this here.. is okay with jim?

i also think the contest "machine flesh"as a whole was fantastic to the to max..major
kudos to the cgnet people once again.

..soooo i have not posted in three+ months....sorry.-got a new computer though so it was worth it.

...too bad the judging has this loophole in it by way of the public vote part....in my opinion...
lets say.. hypothetically that out there is a really great piece didn't make it because quite a few people passed it by because ...
1.they didnt like that lime green color..
2.really hate poodles..
3.can only model a sphere..
4.whatever other lame reason..

not.not, not a grudge against the many! talented! regular cgnet people who have a keen eye and know what is what! ...and very probably stuffed votes to those deserving it.

...who are the other voters anyway?/ are they qualified?..why are they qualified ?..who says so?.. its a talent contest really so let the qualified
[pros !] vote ...solely....judge the judges first ..then stand up and declare the process true
to the artists..and true ,i believe to the wishes of cgnetwork staff ....anything else
gives what should be a fairly standard professional process a healthy dose of the unknowables.
why give freedom to the cgnet/public-anonymous to vote...because it is good public relations and fosters wider participation ...yes in this it serves its purpose..but is it honorable to the artist? are they saying go do good work ..work long hours ,hone your skills
wow us...make us proud....then.. we let the obscure, unidentified, and mysterious
have a major/even stake in the voting process.
...the annual miss american - contest [sorry bad example] is not judged by automobile artist-painter , drywaller or a 15 yr old....because though they have an opinion,in most cases given a very specific contest to judge over they may not be "specifically" qualified...right?... certainly a set of skills is required to vote if the criteria is set out in plain english..
..or maybe not? should a level of trust be granted globally to all cgnet signups?..if so why?
...some kid 1 week with 3dmax votes...ding!
... another kid with maya votes...ding!...again how much does this add up to?.
who is ringing that voting bell anyway?

..so to quote the official rules ...

The Machineflesh Challenge will be judged in two parts. The top 50% of the public vote will be taken to a private jury who will select the final winners.

a point was made by a mod that participation was a vital part of this contest, not in whole
but it was in fact a nessesary component...how was this taken into account by the voters..if at all!
and how was the quality of the particiaption measured?.
mmmh questions.questions.

jammesmk 100% voted to share.
jammesmk 100% voted to participate.
jammesmk 100% voted to be mentioned.
jammesmk 100% voted to be there when you need him.
jammesmk 100% voted to give that extra mile.
jammesmk 100% voted to post and crit with integrity and intelligence.
jammesmk 100% voted to make your day just a little better.
jammesmk 100% voted as a cgnet ambassador.
jammesmk 100% voted period.
dammit.

it was 45c degrees where i was working today...no crap 120 farenheight!
..out in north east poco area for those in the vancouver,bc area so i am a little pissed off
more than usual.

..know you are busy lately,me too.i have caught up on most pages here...see we lost the blue one...your piece was phenomenol the whole development process to watch...again
in replay.fine stuff...drew me in like a moth to a flame.

sorry for use your page for the rant/gripe/.its late and i am rambling on....i shuffle off now.

..now we wait us amateurists with glitter in eyes for the next convergence of the planets.
look..look to the sky... poop. poop.

mmmmh stress and gravy!

Well, hi there guys!

Cartesius - I expected to see you listed as well... Or at least I was thinking that even if mine wasn't in there, then surely yours would at any rate - but nope  But I think the miners are having too much of a good time down there, and prefer to stay perhaps....

Lemog Nut Nut Nut - Ditto. I was quite surprised to see your name missing too.....

flyingP - My hat off!

CLONEOPS - Glad to see you're not dead anyway! And you're quite welcome to rant away - anytime, bud - interesting to read as always, and I'm suddenly getting the urge to enter the next miss America contest :D I could wear a wig, but I'm afraid I would fail horribly in the swimsuit section...

------------ -------------- --------------

So, even if Echo and the Bunnyman left the voters and jury unimpressed, I've got an honorable mention right here and now anyway - all round - and in addition I've got a few PMs from guys expressing just about the same thing. The PR division of Maxon Germany have contacted me asking for rights to use this image for marketing purposes, and just this week I got an email from the editor of the czech CG magazine PiXEL who wanted to print it on their frontpage.

All in all, I'm happy with those results!

MachineFlesh was incredibly fun - the best challenge yet, and my third so far - - - what I'm saying is: BRING IT ON! The next challenge! Aye! I want to see cloned operations, french nuts, swedish texture magic and all sorts of pigs, flying, drinking water or anything. Not to mention greek nuts and every other kind of nut there is. It'll be a blast!

Too bad you've got a PC meltdown... on the other hand you could perhaps use a good excuse to get a new box... explains your sudden absence. Treat the new one gently now.

Oh, blockrocking rig! You'll no doubt churn out even weirder alien geometry than one previously thought possible.... Bowman goes "my god, it's full of polygons!"... and try out the C4D R9 demo for size... the material manager is not slow at all :D There's no VRAY or MR integration though, in case you're one of those guys

I assume mags usually pay for cover material - but I would think that's mainly if it's commisioned specifically for it... Haven't got any news from them about it yet, I simply asked if they could offer something in return... Historically speaking, it's a well known fact that I would be happy about a coffee mug even... and publicity itself is worth a few bucks, no doubt... Don't have any czech PiXEL mugs yet in my collection though...
