Sorry to dissapoint you James... but RevelatioN (no 's' at the end... sorry... my pet peave!) will probably not show its face for this challenge.

I was first thinking about a mech-anencephalic (just kidding!).
I'm working on a couple of sketches... I'l post them later on tonight.

First concept sketch...

Setting: Hospital hallway (low resource hospital - not like the one you see here)
Character: older gentleman who's gone through way too many surgeries to save his life. Most of his vital organs have now been replaced by artificial ones (a la bicentennial man) including some muscle tissue - but all of the artificial organs are made from low-cost materials (not titanium, but slightly rusted alluminum; leather lungs, etc...). He is constantly tied to a powersource and is hospital bound due to the need for constant medical attention. His organs are exposed to prevent a further infection. His skin is full of dials and sockets to constantly monitor his vital signs. His spine and lungs are somewhat exposed in the back, and the respirator that you see, is connected straight to a 'lung interface' behind him.

VERY general details...and a VERY poor sketch since I can't draw for the life of me.
Not sure if I'll go in this direction, so this s just the first concept.
Feedback?

An original take on the subject I must say - I like the idea of leather lungs for some reason.

That aside: more concept sketches, please - there's still plenty of time to think about this, mate. :thumbsup:

MANY more sketches to follow.... like the leather lungs, transparent plastic stomach, rusted spine, fuse box, semi-transparent respirator, etc...
But I can't bear to draw another sketch with a mouse... my Wacom is at home, and my scanner retired a few months ago.

that said, I think I'll start working on the mask.

"Concepting" with a mouse is just painful....

But this gives you an idea of one of the many gizmos he is having to haul with him... it's a leather-lung-aid... sits on the 3rd shelf of the medical cart he walks with.

Oh... and scratch the original concept sketch! It is the main idea, but I want it to look a lot more 'matrixy' than that. Tech-dark messy halways, complicated low-tech equipment, TONS of cables everywhere, etc... You get the idea.

Lol... sorry, I just have to translate that for you: instead of 'thanks' you just said 'roof' :D Sort of similar to my mistake with the plural form of revelation... What you really wanted to say (I presume, otherwise you're weirder than I first assesed) was 'tack' - - - swedish is tricksy that way... :beer:

Okie... I get it now :D

And that would be "tack för feedback", an 'o' with two dots on top instead of an 'u' - - - though technically you could say 'fur' as well, but that would mean "thanks pine tree feedback"... I'm not sure if it makes sense the same way.

Roof pine tree your interest in the swedish language!

Now get back to your modeling! :wip:

Good job so far, Rev - I can clearly envision the cheap-tech feeling coming up with the gritty textures about a month from now or so - - -

All too clean right now... but believe me, it's going to get VERY DIRTY!!!!

...also don't mind the texture. It's only a skin-photo slapped on top to see the color contrast.

I think you feel you're in a hurry - but there's plenty of time. Go back a few steps and do everything really carefully.

I think I agree James. No references so far... (as you can see)
When you talk about proportions, do you mean body-arm, or body-face, or arm-face (or all of the above... which is what I think)... or actual face-proportions (you know, 5 eyes wide, 1 eye separation, eyes mid-head, etc, etc...

I still intended to check out some body references (I will also make him a lot more 'boney')... but I almost declared the head done.... almost.
help me out here with some specifics...

Umm... the first thing I see is that his head appears to be way too big. And the back of his head seems to lack some volume (this might simply be due to some perspective oddity, I don't know) - - - anyhow, lets take it from there to start with, and see what damage can be done :)

Oh, and the word of the day is Orcadian which means something or someone coming from the islands of Orkney.

I looked at the head proportions.... and decided to shrink it just a tad.

(and, Orkney??? Where on earth is that? sounds like a LOTR location to me :) )

That looks much better!

Step #2 - Now do something about his chest. It looks like one solid chunk where there should be two, so try to cut some sort of shallow valleys in there. It doesn't have to be muscles, it can be fatty tissue as well, but in any case it should be grouped in two separate blobs.

He is getting ears.. one day.... someday. They will actually be the first ears I ever do... so I'm leaving those for, well... maybe mid-April.

ok.. back to work. Time to make some valleys and fatty pecs.

..and... .oh! THAT Orkney!
I should've known. ALL my family is from that neck of the woods! (well... a little further South... London area)

I'll start hammering again on Tuesday next week.

(unless you can tell me how on earth did you do your bandages... I tried it with sweep-nurbs and got hideous results.. There's gotta be a better way!)

Waahaa! You're sh*t out of luck now, because I can tell you EXACTLY how I did my bandages :D The method was first published (afaik) by Ikari in the C4D forum, and the thread is HERE! (http://cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=120866)

Too bad about those long hours this week btw... :surprised I would say "OMG!" about it but I won't :D

I can assure you it will be very therapeutic - and it works fine too. You'll get rather a messy mesh afterwards, so make sure all other adjustments are made prior to the 'wrappifying' procedure.

'Poterion' - - - It's not in the dictionary... have to assume it's a very powerful greek god of some sort (combining "potent" and "hyperion") ... interesting choice!

It's actually in koine Greek ( a dead language. It is the stuff in which most of the New Testament was written)... and it simply means, 'chalice', or 'cup'.
On the other hand, 'pinw poterion' means to undergo a difficult situation, generally associated with great suffering... kind'a like what these bandages are doing to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One questions.... from the tutorial ( I REALLY SHOULD BE WORKING... anyway...)-
what on earth does this mean?

At this stage I would go for more definition,sperate the muscles at every nook and crannie.Possibly give him some fat folds,give him some"Underlying muscle tone"...................Possibly you can just see some muscle barely visible under the skin.........just protruding through the flesh.............I also think the thumb could use some more length.But than again only you know if he has shorter type thumbs........All in all your WIP is coming along in a positive way.Nice effort and outcome,the flesh and machine is coming together well.Keep on :wip:

Crumple by normals means simply that - i.e. use the crumple command, and set it to crumple along the normals (as opposed to specific world axis.... es... axes. Axes)

Virtuoso - thanks! I agree that he looks a bit 'flabby' right now. It's just that I know I'm going to open his torax at some point to expose some 'machine' stuff... just don't know specifically where yet. I'll add some definition to the arms, neck and shoulder area.

James... I must be blind. I can't find the 'crumple' command anywhere... I'll look at the manual at some point tonight.

Looks like the tut helped! Now I'll squat down in this here thread and wait for your update.... Yup, I'm not moving.

Which reminds me of that hilarous scene in "Raising Arizona" when they are robbing the bank and tell that old guy to freeze, and then ask him to get down on the floor... but he's not moving because they told him to freeze

thumb elongated (trust me), pecs separated, neck redefined, shoulders rounded,
that area opposite to the elbow... you know what I mean, dented... and a few bandages added to the stomach area. Next in line, pelvis and legs.

It's coming along now, Rev-thingy! Some more detailing on the arms later on perhaps (I understood now that you'll be cutting him open, and don't want to spend any more time doing stuff to the torso). The bandage works well to. :thumbsup:

Decided to go ahead and block out the legs...
It does make sense to have the torso and legs without much definition... and then concentrate on the hardware. I'll let the hardware dictate where the flesh should be removed... same with the legs. -Then I'll add muscle detail...
(I should probably say... "Then I'll figure out how on earth one adds muscle detail:) )

Here are the legs with the beginning of a leg brace. Legs obviously modeled separate (in different computers) and put together in photoshop. I'll check dimensions tonight once I can put both files together.

One questions though. I've been thinking about what to use for clothes for his lower body. My original idea of worn-out hospital-style scrubs is not too bad.... but I've been toying around with the idea of just wrapping him in a towel. Maybe a swagging cloth (not unlike a bed-sheet) wrapped around his waist... dragging behind).

What do you think?

That works fine! - needs more detail, just as you say though, but it's a good foundation. The bandages have the right kind of crumple to them, but maybe you could try and make the extrusions smaller, thus ending up with a flatter/thinner look. They appear a tad bit bulgy now if that makes any sense...
