a few ideas to start building
Very nice sketches!
My only comments would be that the type of 'sharp' claw you have in the top right is used in a lot of artwork/designs. But then I suppose it depends on where you put it! :D
03-21-2004, 12:03 AM
satrted to get basic shape and feel of how hes goin to look
03-21-2004, 01:00 AM
03-21-2004, 03:06 AM
the frontal idea
03-21-2004, 03:24 AM
airworks .. just wanted say it lookin great .. nice sketches and this last post has some wonderful sweeping lines
best of luck to you with this entry
03-21-2004, 06:46 AM
interestin..maybey some details on the idea's behind the concept?
03-21-2004, 08:06 PM
Well, my thoughts are its a kinda prison in a sense, forced to work and without it you would die, hence the life support, and without the machine of time turning everything would come to a screeching halt. We all are slaves to time, and to survive time the longest we can we must work, work the hands of time to our advantage and benefit. If you decide to stop working, you lose your support(in this case your life lines), and run out of the things you need to survive through time.
I cant decide whether i want all the guys pushing one wheel or if theres going to be 1 person per wheel, like a farm of cogs and gears.hmmmmm,
03-22-2004, 06:05 AM
in the process of building off the idea and thats about it
03-22-2004, 07:24 PM
more direction and some parts
03-22-2004, 07:59 PM
Nice progression of concept. Keep it up.

Well,well,...good idea. and it's so true.
i'm agree with you.................
Oups! that remind me i have to work!
Good modeling, just one think if a can, when i saw your last modeling, i didn't understand that he's a prisoner.
I'll forward for more détails!
03-23-2004, 02:53 AM
must work to make money, so I can buy more drugs...to keep me up, so I can work.... so I can make more money, so I can buy drugs....
he he he... I love your concept... much more on the mortality level of course! your sketches and modeling are looking great! Nice atmosphere in the model btw. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy what comes out of this!
keep it up!
03-23-2004, 12:06 PM
will work for food
03-23-2004, 10:00 PM
a few parts that i had time to make today
03-24-2004, 12:28 PM
just a connector and a filter thing
03-24-2004, 12:42 PM
oops, wow, never post when you wake up in the morning, you will post things that you posted, or post things you dont mean to post:/
03-25-2004, 12:31 AM
a new part.whipped into some sort of shape so far...
03-25-2004, 06:42 AM
i think it spart of the criteria
03-25-2004, 01:52 PM
just added ears and some parts:/still working on overall concept cause i dont know something, that being if the bg is part of the character does it count as the character? or is it the background and not part of the character, but intentionally it would be in this case.
03-26-2004, 06:48 AM
started to add some vertex to the mesh
03-26-2004, 08:35 AM
This is a pretty cool concept, me thinks. I particularly like the tubing on his head and that filter device (the larger one with the clear glass), very well designed
03-26-2004, 09:56 AM
This might be silly, but theres a guy in a prison and he's condemned to forever push this device. Correct?
Why does he have arms?
Perhaps you see him with arms, but from the initial (3rd from top) sketch, I wouldn't see him with arms. But thats just me.
Can't wait to see this finished. Good luck!
03-26-2004, 12:10 PM
Hmmmm, i guess i used many of the wrong words to portray my thought. Theres no prison but the "prison" is say for instance, your job, that you go to everyday but a couple to make money to pay for everything in everyday life.:surprised
There is another direction i've been thinking of the past day or so, but no clue about it yet. I just can't decide if i should change the direction i'm going or not, it kinda lies on my background question, becuse i won't concentrate on it if it won't count in the judging. The rules state, that bg stuff doesn't have to be there the judging is on the character itself, but in this case my charater would be connected to the background...
And hmmmm, the thought of no arms, interesting, i didnt think of it that way but maybe you just set me into a direction of thought for a little bit, thanks.
03-26-2004, 12:13 PM
Oh, and thanks about the filter mesh, i use polys to do everything, i don't use nurbs or anything, and well, the was a pain to keep the meshs integrity there.
03-26-2004, 05:02 PM
adding subtle detail and getting a more "natural" look to the head
03-26-2004, 05:39 PM
a wire shot for you wire people to tell me how bad it is...:(
03-26-2004, 07:34 PM
this is Cool man,Why do you keep telling That this is Bad???This is really Nice....:applause:
03-26-2004, 10:33 PM
I like your job and idea, be watching you:buttrock:
03-27-2004, 05:53 PM
just some of the parts i have made and moving them into a more proper position.:/
03-27-2004, 08:09 PM
Wow awesome modelling dude :)
03-27-2004, 08:27 PM
03-28-2004, 02:16 AM
Airworks, you are on to something very interesting. There is something being transmitted through this character that is very interesting. I think you are hitting it on the mark to having the character possess a sense of toil and 'great difficulty.' I rather like it.
Keep moving on your process.
I give up...
03-28-2004, 06:22 AM
jus tplayed with setting fo rlighting a bit and a little modeling.
Lose the mustache ;)
03-28-2004, 07:04 AM
lol, mustache i said the same thing to my self after i rendered i t, it was goin to be a bone like thing through his nose, but i said was.....
03-28-2004, 11:53 AM
Your attention to detail is great.
03-28-2004, 07:09 PM
Check your proportions on the arms and torso compared to the waist and legs.
Its not believable at this point now that I see the rest of the figure.
Push the emotion in the atmosphere of your lighting/environment settings to 100%---
In this competition, you cannot be lukewarm about anything, it has to be to max, there is too much good work in production to take it lightly. The stakes for learning are the most important as I think everyone entering will be pushing their skills to the max and pushing their envelope for new things as well. Could not be better!
03-28-2004, 07:28 PM
Wow, nice concept and great modeling. I like the head and the attachments, but the body does need more work, but I guess you already know that...
Keep it up !
03-28-2004, 07:31 PM
I have to second continuumx about the proportions. The head-and-shoulders closeup looks ace, but seeing the full body makes me feel that some more work needs to be done about the overall volumes. The arms look a bit too inflated, and there seems to be a lot of muscles missing on the sides of his belly.
This is a great entry though, so just keep working that mesh!
03-28-2004, 08:16 PM
yep, i know i havent gotten to gettin the body mesh worked yet, still workin the head and building misc. parts and concepts.little by little i add and move some vertex on the body when i dry up on the head ideas, and yes, no muscle" cuts yet below neck line. he will be much more defined and refined
03-29-2004, 06:48 AM
03-29-2004, 08:53 PM
Is there an ICR chat server and room name anywhere? I cant seem to find one listed on this site anywhere, for cg talk, or forums or......somewhere ?
03-29-2004, 10:03 PM
I like how the concept evolves.Good modeling.
03-29-2004, 10:06 PM
well, i think im about done modeling the head, i think it looks good, a few more tweaks
03-30-2004, 01:27 AM
startin to work the top of the body area to a more realistic kinda look
03-30-2004, 01:27 AM
hmmm, thats strange, i post a pic over an hour ago, now i post another, but it says there posted 3 min apart?????
03-30-2004, 01:51 AM
Great work  Concept and modeling are outsanding
In your concept the guys pushing that giant machine are they slaves or just hard workers? in anyway that's well tought. Keep up that good work
03-30-2004, 03:51 AM
well, what i think im going to go for is the persons pushing are creating energy for themselves on this giant machine. So, no machine no life, no life no machine, there is no one without the other, both are needed to sustain life. But, i had a strange dream last night and i might do some concepts of it to go for a different path, but unshure still. I want o make sure it doesnt go towards anyone elses ideas first. Since i already started this type of idea. I just can't decide, either way the character wouldnt have to be altered. It would mostly be background stuff.
03-30-2004, 02:40 PM
03-30-2004, 02:53 PM
Wow....Man Great Again,I can't Just wait to see your Final scene......Really Nice!:applause: :applause:

working the back of legs and areas
04-01-2004, 08:38 PM
just playin with some ideas for the texture
Really good lighting on the face :applause:
how did you do that and which software you use.
thank you
04-01-2004, 09:21 PM
Great idea to put a tatoo to his face :)
Very Nice Modeling.
04-01-2004, 10:09 PM
Starting to come together.. looking forward to updates.....
04-01-2004, 11:06 PM
actually, not a light at all, its ambient map, and glow map, using maya, regular maya soft render, that was jst a test i got something in store for that, the tattoos will be normal skin looking like the left image, but there will be some "underlaying" effects that should work really well, but a lot of maps to make, will take much time. I'm not using any "pre" made tex or procedruls. Doing everything in PS, by hand.
04-02-2004, 12:59 AM
yeah airwork... your entrys coming along well.... i really like the way that skin aroung the pipes bunches up like its growing around the pipes.. hes been in that situation for a long time hasnt he..... the tatoo is cool aswell.. but wouldnt it be cool if it was like magic.... you now in anime where some dudes have glowing designs on them...? keep up the good work man..
04-03-2004, 03:03 AM
starting to get a texture started
04-03-2004, 05:48 AM
well, about done with the head tex, other than some toning, im goin to continue the tattoo right over his whole body, dont know what into, but not goin to stay all tribal i know that.hehe...;)
04-03-2004, 05:52 AM
man, you know , 1 thing i didnt really think of much in the process of designing this character is the pain the the a$*% its goin to be to rig him up fo rposeing:hmm: I will have to go pull an all nighter.....out...
04-03-2004, 09:22 AM
Hmm.... You're probably not going to be the only pulling your hair while rigging... Expect lots of all-nighters all around.... o_O
Great job you're doing with this model and textures. It's got a dried-up wrinkly appearance that I really like a lot.
Keep it up!
04-03-2004, 01:20 PM
Awsome modeling and really cool texturing!
04-03-2004, 07:44 PM
Well done airworks! In my opinion more asymetry - more natural model. So that tatooon right side is better than that symetric one.
With SSS it will looks like ... will be great!!
04-03-2004, 08:09 PM
Your modeling and lighting skills
are very impressive.:applause:
im goin to continue the tattoo right over his whole body, dont know what into, but not goin to stay all tribal i know
I don't to disregardfull but i just suggest have a look on what i'm working on and not to be accused of plagia ;)
04-03-2004, 09:27 PM
Hmmmm, you have me dumbfounded? i dont get where any of my tribal texture has to do with anything that your modeling? And, well, ive been a tattooist for 11 years its only habit for me to tattoo anything i get my hands on:thumbsup: I do see that your talking about following a "Celtic" type pattern "feel" to your modeling but tribal and celtic are way 2 different things. Believe me, i deal with it all day long, and well, i will and can explain to the fullest knowledge out there about the 2 and the differences and heritage that goes with both. Along with many others at that. And no, i dont think that our ideas will have the same look at all?As i said, i really dont see any resemblance at all.
04-03-2004, 09:34 PM
I was stupid to say that. :banghead:
i put so much of my own in the contest lol
that i'm becomimg paranoiac lol
04-04-2004, 01:13 AM
Boy oh boy, sittin here playin with some riggin ideas and i think i got it, well close to what i'm goin ta need to get this guy to have some motion. The thing that was goin to get me i thought was all these cables and such connecting to his body, so they all have to move with him ina nice fluid fashion, with fluid flowing through them adn all made me think of how they would react with all that pressure. What came to mind was a swimming pool being drained, the hoses that they run, they have a stiff jiggle to them and when the hose is moved it kinda smacks around a bit. Dont know, it gettin close...:hmm:
A fun rigging nightmare
04-04-2004, 06:21 AM
well, about there for head tex, no spec map yet, that will do wonders, soon to be shping this head into apose or 2 or 20
04-04-2004, 06:38 AM
Great idea and great execution! I like very much the new textures. Keep it up and good luck buddy
04-04-2004, 06:47 AM
impresive texturing, airwork!
keep it up!
04-04-2004, 02:20 PM
wow the circuts coming through the skin with that glow looks awesome. this whole idea is coming together beautifully!
04-04-2004, 02:52 PM
Looks great, i would prefer the white one considering that everyone seems to be going with the tattoo idea, it is almost getting old.
04-05-2004, 04:50 AM
Great work man. Kind of reminds me of some other cg work that I've seen recently. Can't remember what exactly, but its very familiar.
Great work on the modelling and a good idea for the circuits showing through the skin, but I dont think you really have it looking right just yet. Perhaps change the opacity of it to something more irregular and make it look as though there are pulses going through them.
Anyway, a really good entry so far.
04-05-2004, 06:49 AM
hi , i must say that this is a really nice work so far, the textures looks really well, and i agree with imscifi, thats a nice idea, ohh wrinkles looks truly amazign good job there
04-05-2004, 01:41 PM
04-05-2004, 07:33 PM
well, i'm going ta change my idea abit, will do some scetches, hmm, well, i dont think that the background incorporation will go over well, considering this is a character contest, not a scene.... So, my thoughts that i had a few days ago will have to come to life, it should work well , and well he already has the "Shaman" feel to him, guess i go with it:)
04-06-2004, 09:34 PM
just testing hair and making the maps
04-06-2004, 11:59 PM
Love the fur action Ive been working on it for a while. I think your piece is looking wicked with it:applause:
04-07-2004, 01:17 AM
It looks good, but i think the texture takes away from the mesh a bit, its hard to pick up some of the details.
Thats just my thought though...
shaman you say? interesting.
04-07-2004, 01:37 AM
GREAT! i was hoping that the textures took away from the mesh, well, it shouldnt look like a mesh at all i figure and glad to see that the tex. attracts much attention. Also these are maya soft renders without fg, when i final render and composite the feel of it should change quite drastically. I do have some renders of MR that the tex isn't so prominent, it really cuts down the tex bump a bit, hence how deep it looks in maya soft renders.
04-08-2004, 02:06 AM
nice mechanics on the head:buttrock:
I like your way as you combine your experience in tattoo with 3d visualization. killer set:bowdown:
04-08-2004, 04:47 AM
I'm not so sure about the hair, it looks rather 2d and cartoonish, I think it detracts from the beauty of the rest of the head. You still could use hair, but not looking like it is at the moment as far as I'm seeing.
Good work regardless
04-09-2004, 03:20 AM
How did you get the wire underglow effect? A link to a tutorial?
04-09-2004, 05:48 AM
updated hair and tex
04-09-2004, 07:53 AM
Very impressive rendering of the hair !
Colors choice for the face skin is very good.
Keep it up!

04-13-2004, 04:04 PM
I love the texture you have done for cables! Perhaps you could had some textile effects like cables isolator used for cables in PC Like Sheath textile.
Great textures for the eyes also :)
04-13-2004, 08:23 PM
i wish i knew what you meant by what you saying?????lol
04-14-2004, 02:18 AM

04-14-2004, 03:09 AM
thanks alot for the compliments on the tex, took abit of thought to figure out how i wanted it, .Also, i get what you mean abou tthe sheath, hmmmm, you seam to be the modeling knotwork nut thats got that figured out, i dont, i'm more of a texture kinda person:hmm: i give it a try and thanks for the idea  it would have to be rubbery and stretchy a abit, but doh, what am i saying , k thanks
04-14-2004, 06:39 AM

04-16-2004, 09:13 PM
These textures are really lifelike. Especially cables.
This is one of your strong sides, probably because of your Tattoo past.
04-17-2004, 02:55 AM

playin with texturing and making more parts, i am doing this with lots of extras, he can be dressed or not dressed, textures hidden an dlots of work that won't be seen, ....but could be, so, say in the winter he can have clothes on but in the desert just about none:) if anyone cares
04-22-2004, 04:17 PM

05-21-2004, 12:03 AM
I like your texturing style, especially on the chest!
05-21-2004, 12:30 AM
He reminds me of a mutulated version of Icognito from Hellsing with the patterns etc... it looks awesome man you have really done a good job
05-22-2004, 12:51 AM
i did a couple tests, no particular motions just checking things with the rig...
05-22-2004, 01:24 AM
anim test weighting and such...
05-24-2004, 02:14 AM
WoW, just saw that arm rig test, and I must say I'm very impressed with your rigging skills! Nice work =)
I think my previous post might have been deleted after the hacker incident so I might aswell repost my thoughts.
I think you need to start thinking more about the emotional content of this character. He is obviously some sort of experimented mutant/monster built for killing or carnage or something equally unpleasant. With that in mind I think perhaps a more extreme post and more aggressive facial expressions would suit him better. Something along the lines of the hulk... anger, rage, exploding...
Just my thoughts...
Anyway, its looking great so far =):buttrock:
05-24-2004, 05:52 AM

I know its a bit late to say but those tentacles seem a bit too big. :/

05-24-2004, 10:58 AM
Very beautiful, Dana - big respect!!!:buttrock:
One little critic about presentation : It's a little bit to dark to see your stunning details....what about using a brighter background??
..but beside of this, your effort is quite amazing!!!:applause:
05-24-2004, 08:19 PM

Love the environment Airworks, it really fits the theme of your character nicely.
I'll reserve judgement on the lighting as you said previously, these are only tests.
The characters pose is looking better too. Great to see it all coming together:thumbsup:

I like your models, and BG too.
Did you think about a final position to your models : angry, quiet,...
Waves on the ground bear witnes about a strong action. but it could be just "mental". ??
About the ground, anyone would think "Matrix".
I like. :bounce:
05-28-2004, 07:32 PM
yeh, yah know i kinda think matrix on the ground to but ive been doin that puddle look way before the matrix was a movie:thumbsup: im kinda thinkin its not him doing this to the ground but more something coming through the ground(out of it)...i dont know not doing that much on the ground anyway just giving his somewhere to stand:shrug:

06-03-2004, 06:34 AM
well have my background layers rendered now for the foreground and character in the next couple days, takes quite the render time to render this size of render:P
06-03-2004, 08:48 AM
whoa looks sweet!
I like the feel of motion and struggle.. very dynamic
06-04-2004, 07:38 AM

wouldve liked to see a bit more work on the nonhuman arm
06-12-2004, 07:23 PM
i wouldve liked to do more but im out of computer, its maxed out:( the things i had to do to render the guy himself without bg stuff was like pullin teeth.....dont know how many times it crashed 5 /7 hours into a render then havin to restart again.....i'm surprised this machine renders at all sometimes, it likes to be non-user friendly.
06-12-2004, 07:33 PM
yea I know I can work on my pic for sometime , then the
machine goes all slow and I gotta save the work and
restart the computer so it's faster again for a while
buing a new computer after the contest :)
Congratulations Airworks your image is excelent . All the composition is great , hope to see you in the next contest.
06-12-2004, 09:15 PM

Well, I like it very much, but I miss a vertical render image, because the horizontal one, take away power of your tall and strong personage.
06-21-2004, 05:20 AM
Turned out great... a very powerful looking character. Nice work man =)
