Very nice sketches!
My only comments would be that the type of 'sharp' claw you have in the top right is used in a lot of artwork/designs. But then I suppose it depends on where you put it! :D

Well, my thoughts are its a kinda prison in a sense, forced to work and without it you would die, hence the life support, and without the machine of time turning everything would come to a screeching halt. We all are slaves to time, and to survive time the longest we can we must work, work the hands of time to our advantage and benefit. If you decide to stop working, you lose your support(in this case your life lines), and run out of the things you need to survive through time.
I cant decide whether i want all the guys pushing one wheel or if theres going to be 1 person per wheel, like a farm of cogs and gears.hmmmmm,

just added ears and some parts:/still working on overall concept cause i dont know something, that being if the bg is part of the character does it count as the character? or is it the background and not part of the character, but intentionally it would be in this case.

This is a pretty cool concept, me thinks. I particularly like the tubing on his head and that filter device (the larger one with the clear glass), very well designed :thumbsup:

This might be silly, but theres a guy in a prison and he's condemned to forever push this device. Correct?
Why does he have arms?
Perhaps you see him with arms, but from the initial (3rd from top) sketch, I wouldn't see him with arms. But thats just me.

Hmmmm, i guess i used many of the wrong words to portray my thought. Theres no prison but the "prison" is say for instance, your job, that you go to everyday but a couple to make money to pay for everything in everyday life.:surprised
There is another direction i've been thinking of the past day or so, but no clue about it yet. I just can't decide if i should change the direction i'm going or not, it kinda lies on my background question, becuse i won't concentrate on it if it won't count in the judging. The rules state, that bg stuff doesn't have to be there the judging is on the character itself, but in this case my charater would be connected to the background...
And hmmmm, the thought of no arms, interesting, i didnt think of it that way but maybe you just set me into a direction of thought for a little bit, thanks.

Oh, and thanks about the filter mesh, i use polys to do everything, i don't use nurbs or anything, and well, the was a pain to keep the meshs integrity there.

Airworks, you are on to something very interesting. There is something being transmitted through this character that is very interesting. I think you are hitting it on the mark to having the character possess a sense of toil and 'great difficulty.' I rather like it.
Keep moving on your process.

Check your proportions on the arms and torso compared to the waist and legs.
Its not believable at this point now that I see the rest of the figure.
Push the emotion in the atmosphere of your lighting/environment settings to 100%---
In this competition, you cannot be lukewarm about anything, it has to be to max, there is too much good work in production to take it lightly. The stakes for learning are the most important as I think everyone entering will be pushing their skills to the max and pushing their envelope for new things as well. Could not be better!

I have to second continuumx about the proportions. The head-and-shoulders closeup looks ace, but seeing the full body makes me feel that some more work needs to be done about the overall volumes. The arms look a bit too inflated, and there seems to be a lot of muscles missing on the sides of his belly.
This is a great entry though, so just keep working that mesh!

yep, i know i havent gotten to gettin the body mesh worked yet, still workin the head and building misc. parts and concepts.little by little i add and move some vertex on the body when i dry up on the head ideas, and yes, no muscle" cuts yet below neck line.:beer: he will be much more defined and refined

well, what i think im going to go for is the persons pushing are creating energy for themselves on this giant machine. So, no machine no life, no life no machine, there is no one without the other, both are needed to sustain life. But, i had a strange dream last night and i might do some concepts of it to go for a different path, but unshure still. I want o make sure it doesnt go towards anyone elses ideas first. Since i already started this type of idea. I just can't decide, either way the character wouldnt have to be altered. It would mostly be background stuff.

actually, not a light at all, its ambient map, and glow map, using maya, regular maya soft render, that was jst a test i got something in store for that, the tattoos will be normal skin looking like the left image, but there will be some "underlaying" effects that should work really well, but a lot of maps to make, will take much time. I'm not using any "pre" made tex or procedruls. Doing everything in PS, by hand.

yeah airwork... your entrys coming along well.... i really like the way that skin aroung the pipes bunches up like its growing around the pipes.. hes been in that situation for a long time hasnt he..... the tatoo is cool aswell.. but wouldnt it be cool if it was like magic.... you now in anime where some dudes have glowing designs on them...? keep up the good work man..

Hmmmm, you have me dumbfounded? i dont get where any of my tribal texture has to do with anything that your modeling? And, well, ive been a tattooist for 11 years its only habit for me to tattoo anything i get my hands on:thumbsup: I do see that your talking about following a "Celtic" type pattern "feel" to your modeling but tribal and celtic are way 2 different things. Believe me, i deal with it all day long, and well, i will and can explain to the fullest knowledge out there about the 2 and the differences and heritage that goes with both. Along with many others at that. And no, i dont think that our ideas will have the same look at all?As i said, i really dont see any resemblance at all.

Boy oh boy, sittin here playin with some riggin ideas and i think i got it, well close to what i'm goin ta need to get this guy to have some motion. The thing that was goin to get me i thought was all these cables and such connecting to his body, so they all have to move with him ina nice fluid fashion, with fluid flowing through them adn all made me think of how they would react with all that pressure. What came to mind was a swimming pool being drained, the hoses that they run, they have a stiff jiggle to them and when the hose is moved it kinda smacks around a bit. Dont know, it gettin close...:hmm:

Great work man. Kind of reminds me of some other cg work that I've seen recently. Can't remember what exactly, but its very familiar.
Great work on the modelling and a good idea for the circuits showing through the skin, but I dont think you really have it looking right just yet. Perhaps change the opacity of it to something more irregular and make it look as though there are pulses going through them.
Anyway, a really good entry so far.

It looks good, but i think the texture takes away from the mesh a bit, its hard to pick up some of the details.

GREAT! i was hoping that the textures took away from the mesh, well, it shouldnt look like a mesh at all i figure and glad to see that the tex. attracts much attention. Also these are maya soft renders without fg, when i final render and composite the feel of it should change quite drastically. I do have some renders of MR that the tex isn't so prominent, it really cuts down the tex bump a bit, hence how deep it looks in maya soft renders.

I'm not so sure about the hair, it looks rather 2d and cartoonish, I think it detracts from the beauty of the rest of the head. You still could use hair, but not looking like it is at the moment as far as I'm seeing.

I think my previous post might have been deleted after the hacker incident so I might aswell repost my thoughts.
I think you need to start thinking more about the emotional content of this character. He is obviously some sort of experimented mutant/monster built for killing or carnage or something equally unpleasant. With that in mind I think perhaps a more extreme post and more aggressive facial expressions would suit him better. Something along the lines of the hulk... anger, rage, exploding...
Just my thoughts...

Love the environment Airworks, it really fits the theme of your character nicely.

yeh, yah know i kinda think matrix on the ground to but ive been doin that puddle look way before the matrix was a movie:thumbsup: im kinda thinkin its not him doing this to the ground but more something coming through the ground(out of it)...i dont know not doing that much on the ground anyway just giving his somewhere to stand:shrug:

getting there almost have the leg shiled done also, tomorrow, then render him large, i rendered everything but the foreground large so far, so only 2 layers left, i play with his posing tomorrow also, but that close to where i want him.

ok, heres the bg in jpg format at full render size.....
the character gets the render tonight then i just drop him on in there standin, and not look at this for a couple days and say, whao, i finished something:P

well, everything went smooth as glass till i go to render my character at full resolution:surprised , well been goin and makin changes to the lighting and such and playin withdifferent samples and raytracing setting trying to get this to render full res, if not i gotta start reducing file sizes to suite:cry:

well, i have just acouple more layers to renderr and i might rerender the character again not sure.But, basically this i sit, the coloring, bg, foreground, i might add a little more things to the ground but , no real need , im going to use this guy for animation(have an idea) with a nother model i had just finished before this comp started and i put him on the back burner. Should be fun, and about glad to be done with him, completed

i wouldve liked to do more but im out of computer, its maxed out:( the things i had to do to render the guy himself without bg stuff was like pullin teeth.....dont know how many times it crashed 5 /7 hours into a render then havin to restart again.....i'm surprised this machine renders at all sometimes, it likes to be non-user friendly.

yea I know I can work on my pic for sometime , then the
machine goes all slow and I gotta save the work and
restart the computer so it's faster again for a while
buing a new computer after the contest :)

hmmm... go to the upload final image section here (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/machineflesh/final_image.php) login... then check under... FOR THE 3D CHALLENGE label ull see a little purple square... inside it u should see your final image... if dont ull see a text the tell u to submmit it!... if your image is not complete ull have to upload again...
hope that help.... about your work u made a great display of skillz and ended with a very nice piece of art man! so congratulationss... wish u the best!
