This is not much but I have to start from somewhere, my first challenge so I better start early
It's too soon to say what I want this character to be like, but I want it to be male, huge and menacing

Concept?

santiago

I'm not sure I want to draw a concept, I'm just experimenting at this point
I might end up drawing a concept anyway :buttrock:

slowly but steadily, I've changed a bit of the polygon order and enlarged the nail
I want to get some anatomy going before modeling the machine part of this character

I think you'd find even a rough sketch to be a lot of help,
and I would love a better idea on where you're heading
than "large and menacing" :)

I look forward to seeing more!

All the best,

Tony

I have several ideas and I still can't figure out which I want most. First there is the idea of stripping off all the skin of these futuristic soldiers and applying bio-mechanical suits that replace their skin enabling them to run and jump faster by using a set of spider-like legs attached to their backs. This is a very old sketch I did showing just the anatomy of one of the soldiers and the position of his legs since he doesn't use them during combat

here's another sketch, part of a storyboard, where a bunch of these soldiers come out from the ocean to attack a supposed terrorist nest. Not much detail.
But I have two other ideas as well, the one I started modeling is of a gladiator named Goliath, who has been enhanced to kill. And yet a third idea is of humans that were born in the moon and after thousands of years their descendants have grown taller due to gravity being less, and when the decontaminize the Earth to be able to inhabit it again, they require bio-mechanical implants to adjust to the changes in gravity and other weather conditions. They are supposed to be over 3 meters tall and pretty skinny, like those dudes that appear at the end of the film AI

that's why I decided to just start modeling the anatomy and then afterwards decide what I'll go for. I think it's better to make the original character first and then make the machine-modified version of it after, it sounded like more fun to me that way
Can I try to submit all three ideas?
I wonder if I can pull that off, and put them altogether in a room... hmmm maybe not
the gladiator one has a story iof its own
the moon people on Earth and the soldiers are both in the same story, but they don't overlap in the story
I guess I have to choose and get to work

I duplicated the finger and modeled a hand. I tried making a thumb out of the fingers and finally gave up, and decided to model from scratch. I like the shape of it, I'm still not sure which character I want, but with this kind of an arm, it couldn't be the 3m tall moon people I mentioned earlier.

Heh... if you have your sketch in head... you can model without drawings :p . But anyways you need to draw something :) .
Good Luck

well I've done alot of work on the arm, I'm trying to get ready for to model the torso, it's been mostly shift copying edges of each edge loop and cutting an edge when I think I'll need more rows of polys for to shape some muscle structure.

I'll try to draw a concept sketch this coming weekend.

great model so far...
the hand has great anatomical proportions and the musculature is ok.
ceep it up.

well here's my first concept sketch. I'm partly basing this on the previous drawings I posted. The story goes something like this...

terrorists destroy life on Earth sometime in the future, by then a colony of humans existed on the Moon. So since they were developing a genesis project like the one on one of those star trek films, for Mars, they decided to use it for the Moon. It was an emergenc situation and lack of resources was killing the humans on the Moon. So they go to sleep for 90 million years, and everyonewakes up at about the same time except for a few, one of which was a pregnant woman called ... I haven't decided on her name yet.

Anyway, so when they wake up they have lost all faculties, they're like babies and have to make up a new language and learn to walk uproght and stuff like that. Everything is different because all the DNA used to build the ecosystem on the genesis project was new DNA, so the were no longer dogs or horses or the plants we know, etc. There were other living things.
So thousands of years pass, haha
it's so fun zapping through time
anyway, so this woman wakes up when science is advanced in this new civilization and they manage to get her out of her sleep, she gives birth to Goliath. Just like it was unpredictable that after millions of years in sleep humans may lose their speech and memory, etc. it was also unpredictable what might happen to a human developing in the womb of a woman for such a long time.
So Goliath grows up to become a giant, he's so tall. His mom dies and another guy raises him, called... I haven't decided on that either, haha
anyway, so the guy that raises Goliath is bad, really bad, and is power-hungry. He learns to extend his life for a long time, many generations, and maintains Goliath alive that long as well, but fot to achiev this he needs to modify Goliath's body and his own. He keeps Goliath alive because using him he is unvinceable, Goliath becomes the greatest warrior, no vehicle or projectile are able to match his power.

So Goliath is periodically placed in a circus and used as a gladiator to punish people who defy his owner, and sometimes they just punish anybody out of pleasure to show power, and one of them is David.

So David and Goliath fight in the circus, and this concept sketch is of them two having a conversation, David is showing Goliath something special.

Loooooooooooong story
David and Goliath are on Earth in this sketch, so they have to adjust to greater gravity. The humans on the moon are over 3 meters tall average, Goliath is about 3 times taller than that.

I don't like how this is looking, I want this to be animatable so I'm gonna have to change this, I guess it would cause wrinkling or form points when it moves

I'll need to make sketches of his torso details, to show the vital organ replacements. Maybe some tubes and controls that replace is lower torso.

by the way thanks for the comments so far
I like the fact that I'm taking two story ideas I have and combining them.

Can someone please tell me how to add a link to this thread on my signature?
I see everybody with links on their signatures, I'm getting so jealous

I thought only showing part of his inside mechanics might look better. I think I'll replace the abs with something that looks similar but that is artificial.

here's a wireframe of the head DaVee.
I've already updated it a little.
It's beginning to take shape, I want his head to have jagged wrinkles and formations and add something mechanical on his scalp

nice story! and the modeling is coming along nicely too! so David and Goliath aye.... ...didn't david kill Goliath with some rock sling thing....maybe you can have Goliath Kill david for making him his slave...and deforming him.....just a thought! cheers mate!

here's a more detailed sketch of his head
I was thinking of adding more cables to that hub off the side of his head, but I thought I'd ask you guys if that would be too much

there's an idea
I dunno, these two guys weren't part of my original story "virtuality", I wanted to make a demo animation with them and other characters, but then life changed and I was away from CG for over a year. I'm putting an effort into returning to the life, and I might as well finish some infinished business before I get busy again

Good modeling for the head. Can't wait to see mechanics objects.

He look like really agressive.

I seen in your last sketch that your character is completely deaf ...(i'm joking).

I love it

He reminds me of Spawn :)
You know the assasin who gets killled and then comes back as the leader of the army of hell. :) That kick ass dude. His faces looks a lot like spawn but other than that he is just a butt kicking cool looking giant. :scream:

santiago
03-24-2004, 01:45 PM
wow that is so true, I didn't realise that, and I have a Spawn toy standing right beside my monitor, heh
I guess it's a subliminal influence, but it makes sense, this Goliath character is supposed to be thousands of years old, and his owner has done the impossible to keep him tickin'
I'll try to stay away from Spawn a bit for originality's sake
I think my focus on the mechatronics of this character will be in modeling his vital organs, and I've decided to only show some of it from the exterior. But I'll model them complete anyway and render them individually. This is why I'm trying to get a head start even though there's still over two months left, becuase I only put in about an hour a day and want to be able to put in as much detail as possible

I really like adding more sketches even though I've already started modeling, it helps me improve the design, and I'm hoping it will allow response to feedback on changing the model as I proceed bit by bit

I've been trying different ways of modeling his wrinkles and have settled with this, starting with long extruded columns of quads and giving each a smoothing group. They also have individual sub-object material assignments so that it's easier for me to work on each group as a whole. Those blue tones are just for helping me organize those groups, although accidently I like how they combine with his pale skin colour.

santiago
03-27-2004, 09:33 PM
It's still symmetric, once I'm happy with the way the groups of polys are organized, then I'll combine the two halves and begin to work on it assymetrically

I think the wrinkles on his head are too big
tone em down a little.

wonderful modeling! i can see it really helps to have some good knowledge of anatomy. the skin tones look fine but the white colors with the blue and black wrinkles on his head look awsome! really scary effect. neat and clean modeling too.
i cant wait to see more!
