View Full Version : Ambient Occulsion Question

Hello all,

I have been a lurker for quite a long time and have learned many a great things from this site. I am in a position now which I need to ask a pretty dumb question:blush:
I am using mental ray for Maya and I am wanting to do a AO pass with the dirtmap shader for compositing later. My question is do I use the same lighting setup for this pass as I do for my other passes or do kill all my other lights and use an ambient light for the dirtmap pass, also do I leave FG and GI on for this pass. Im sorry for this kind of question. I have searched through the site and have found loads of information on AO I was never sure on how to "light" the AO pass.

Remove all lights for an ambient pass, and turn off any global illumination features.

Does final gather count as an GI feature, or should i leave it on.
