hello there, :wavey:

I've put that topic on general modeling but without any response.

I'm modeling my first character ever. It's a mid poly ( 3000 ) dwarf
warrior for a game. Because it is a dwarf it is important to create most realistic long beard, moustache and some braids. I can spend there about 200-250 polys on "hairy" part.
I would like to ask for some advice 'cos I'm totally green on this one. Would it be better to create hairs from stripes of polygons or create dimensional hairs, or blend those tehniques.
Help me out. Any suggestion would be very helpful.

To give you an idea how that creature that supposed to be dwarf looks. It looks more like goblin face right now (I have to work on that to)

Well, you can pretty much rule out doing each strand, or lump of strands. Its actually a waste and would make laying out the UV's for textureing a nightmare. Well, not really that bad, but I'll make it sound that way. My suggestion would be to first gather up some references of beards. Both fantasy and actual. Your greatest hope for getting the results you want will be in your texture map. This is where all your detail should lie. As far as modeling goes, I would presonally just model the rough shape of the beard, based of references, then make sure only the contours looks good, and leave the texture map to fill in the rest for you. Check out BLizzard's World of Warcraft site. They have some good pictures of beards and you can generally see their method of building it just by looking at the pictures. Keeping the entire beard as one mesh also offers you the chance to insert a bone into the beard and make it sway back and forth as your character walks. Thats if you plan on animateing it. But that is just my take on it. Hoped this helped.

Thanx, I have 2 more days to finish him so i will look for some beard references and try to experiment with that. It's like walking into the dark - anything can happen.
