Well, it's a first but I think (i may be wrong) that you're trying to learn too much things at once. If you want to make a walk, don't get busy with rigging or modelling. Make your walk with bones and render it directly with the bones.
Then, you need to have some doc. (Preston Blair, as said before, or Richard Williams have written realy good ones)
but anyway, keep trying... it's so much fun to bring things to life ! :D
i know it works :P
but it doesn't work..

I tried again with a rigged model I downloaded awhile ago. I thought this one turned out better than my first try.

This is getting better indeed. Watch for the leg movement, legs never get this straight and that's why you're getting this little confusing and unnatural movement.

his right hip seems to be popping out the right leg joint at beginning of each step.
also work on the fluid motion of his body, when u walk u dont move then slow, move then slow, its a constant forward fluid motion

I started reading the animators survival kit today and I'm at the part about walks. So hopefully tomorrow I'll post something really good. :)
