Now 2d wise this concept isn't much of a masterpiece :p . I'll probably post a better version ones I get my scanner working. Might look completly diffrent then because I still haven't figured out if the best way to go is realistic or more cartoon like :/

http://members.ams.chello.nl/r.heijselaar/concept.jpg

It'll be towing slaves in cages, or something else dark and sinister :p

*edit*

Also, since the concept is so crappy I think i'll need to give some extra explaination :p It's sort of a huge spider, towing the cages behind him. With a small, troll/goblin like owner sitting on his back.

Updated above!

What I've got planned so far is tweak the eyes, chin and lips a bit and then move on to the teeth.

Deleted the old concept because I was just too ashamed of it :p Still working on the scanner :annoyed: . Anyone ever had this problem by the way? When I start scanning it makes a rathling sound and then the scanline just stands there making this HORRIBLE beeeeeeep, without moving... just plain creepy :p

The model looks good so far. I like the idea. Hmmm as far as your scanner, it sounds like the belt or motor that moves the mirror up and down the page is messed up. You might have to take it to a shop to have it fixed.

love the 6 eyes and the underbite...gives this guy some character...keep em coming!

Again, updated above

Chin is still a bit weird but that won't take too long to fix.

Zro-1: Looks like that's the last solution :annoyed: Checked if it's the software but nothings wrong there...

Berzerker, digones: thanks for the comments :) Hope I'll end up with a decent result

I like it so far! Cool head ridges! I think you should definitely go more realistic as this challenge is strictly modelling. :)

Very cool. But it would be nice to see your progress.
So that we have more pictures than one the one most up to date

I will :)

Just thought it wasn't much of an update to add a whole new picture for. All that changed was rendered and some more lip. But I'll be sure to post the updates ones I can work on this again. Oh and I'm not home but can scan over here :D So I'll post the concept soon aswell.

Thanks for the comments btw :D

Finally can go back to working on this :D Made the jaw row of teeth and changed the chin a bit again. I've got a little problem with the teeth though. It leaves this brighter line at the bottom, probably because it gets weld together in layout... So I'll need to make it more polys at every single tooth or hopefully find a faster way to fix it :/

(yay, cgtalk is back) Looking good! Dig the underbite and teeth and eyes and stuffs.

Can kinda see the line you're talking about..nothing gets welded in layout though, so not sure what's going on..what's your wireframe look like? You may have stray 2pt polys or something as well..kinda looks like you just have tight polys there perhaps.

Here it is;

Think it's because the teeth don't go smooth :/ They slope just a little bit which makes it catch more light. It doesn't show when the light comes from beneath.

Not sure though, giving it a try now :p

I'd say just consider it a happy accident. Call the white line plaque build up or something :D ;)

toxichimp
07-08-2002, 11:43 PM
lol! A huge, horrific creature with a dental problem. Isn't that something :p

Just have to change it because I know for sure that at every new render it I'll annoy me more, and end up fixing it anyway :p ... truely is a curse :annoyed:

cool start ,agressive teeth.....mmmmmmmm... i cant wit to see the body oooouuu..

hypercube

Yeah actually I like the plaque idea..big nasty carnivore breath :D

I think it's due to the smoothing out there..the whole thing is one piece, right? I'd try grabbing the teeth and sinking them down into the gums, or maybe bandsaw a small extra row into the bottom of each..or you could just leave it..with lighting, more shadows, more beast, I don't think that'll be the focus. Hell, I didn't look it and say to myself "HEY, LOOK AT THE LINE ON THOSE TEETH!". But then no one noticing an error will never stop you from wanting to slash your wrists every time you see it, I know the feeling :)

Anyway, keep bustin'..

That did it hypercube :D Thanks loads. It's just a bit more into the flesh now, and it actually looks better geometry wise aswell :D

Needs alot of tweaking but the main layout for the creature should end up looking like this..

Crits are more then welcome :p

man this is lookin fantastic. a few crits(knowing your not done)
i would emphisise what each part is i.e. is his head flesh or shell if its flesh it needs more variation of form(musclestructure to work that big jaw) also the upper legs look underdeveloped, again are they flesh, bone, shell, exoskeliton. if its an under water creature he needs agile propultion(maybe a bigg tail) those legs dont look like they can push him through the water.. in my eyes youve got a lobstery creature, so use lobster reference. one more, his legs look like they are for digging in sand or the bottom of the ocean, but his teeth say flesheater allthe way, so how does he catch his prey.(needs grabbers or somethin. annway im sure you probably have this all worked out . but i think waht you have looks awsome.

Thanks!

The shell/flesh diffrence seems like a good idea, right now the only diffrence is color. So I'll probably add a bump map to the shell and it actually has some sort of muscle structure, just too smoothed I guess :) I'll push it a bit inward, should look more clear then I hope. The upper legs were done rather fast, and I'll probably make it look more like flesh, or add some organic armor.

Also, I haven't really thought about stuff like that. I just started making scetches, ended up with this and started modelling. The teeth just gave it a nice touch I thought, and the legs were just tweaked into this shape. Also, it will be walking, but now you mentioned the lobster style, it got me thinking :) Sure is original...

Instead of a chair on his back a small sub under it :D With an owner that lives by plundering old ship wrecks, as a solution to making it haul something :)

ZrO-1
07-12-2002, 07:53 PM
Oh, I thought this was a water bug type of BoB. The feet right now definetly look more like their suited for the water than the land. Other than that rizob managed to crit anything else I might have said so I'll just say "ditto". :)

It's far from finished but thought I'd show this here anyway. It's the model of a mermaid (explanation below :p) and a lighting test. I could really use critism on both the anatomy and lighting since I'm a huge newbie at this.

http://members.ams.chello.nl/r.heijselaar/render1640.jpg

I turned the beast into a water bug now (thanks to the crits and comments :) ) but thought a sub under it didn't really fit. Now this is a bit twisted perhaps but the new idea is a water bug that's a slave of 3 mermaid witches. They look pretty cute and nice up close, but ones their mad they turn into hideous old witches and kill stuff :D ... No idea what the poor water bug will be hauling but I'll figure that out while modelling the mermaids :p

toxichimp
07-14-2002, 09:58 PM
Ok, some critism on my own stuff lol. But just to get this cleared :p

Just found out the elbows and boobs look a bit weird :/ I think it's a atanomy problem so gonna go tweak that right away... Last one doesn't matter too much I think because I'll probably add a top to make it kiddy friendly :p

Also wanted to ask if anyone has any tutorials on rendering and lighting, so far I couldn't find any real helpful ones :(

Shes got those too perfect breasts. But that will be okay if she is underwater, (boobs float)

But seriously folks....
Where was I?

Oh...
Oh yeah!!! Show us a good shot of the wireframe. Until then I can say it looks like all the anatomy is placed correctly. The collarbones should be a little more curved towards the shoulder. But that's about all. How about that animation you were doing. Did you ever finish it? I never got to see it.

toxichimp
07-14-2002, 10:48 PM
The animations (and game) Whent pretty well and got finished :) Here it is;

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5342&perpage=15&pagenumber=10

And now you mentioned it, I never pmd you about that animation :/ Gaggle helped me out on a account I could log in, because the final game and animation were way to big to send through my 10mb webspace :(

As for the model, true for the breasts :p I probably will change that a bit anyway, want to keep stuff as realistic (and artistic) as possible. Same goes for the collar bones.

Here's the wireframe:

Very cool..tired of looking at all these ugly cusses, could do with a spot of beauty, even if it's only skin deep :D

You already noted the elbows and bits..can't see anything else glaring, except for the zero-gee breasts.. ("My name's Hillary. It means 'one whose breasts defy gravity'.") Well, and the holes :p are you going to have some kind of outfit on them? armor made from the unfortunate beasts that came before?

Look forward to more..

P.S. I think I missed commenting since, the beastie is looking kickass, and I think underwater suits him well either way, the head reminded me of a mutant Monstro to begin with :) No crits other than what's already in the queue.

Rock on..

toxichimp
07-14-2002, 11:15 PM
lol, really need to change the breasts yeah :p As for the outfit, I'm not sure yet. Probably some sort of top made out of cloth I guess, or I'll let her swim in the nude. Does make them look a bit more primitive and natural :D

Thanks for beast :) I really needed a rest from it though, so many little errors in the geometry at the moment. From far it looks fine, but up close the small errors start to show, just plain frustating :(

dmcgrath
07-15-2002, 04:12 AM
No seriously, about the breasts, they are fine if she is underwater. I know they are a bit idealized in their size, but they will defy gravity (underwater). You could make them smaller and don't get too bogged down looking at them all day. You should move on to other spots to model, liek the collar bone and teh pit of the forearm. Where it bends, you should give it a little more detail, a little crease of skin.

toxichimp
07-16-2002, 07:35 AM
Yeah, I'll probably change those things first... think I've got the perfect solution though. I'll rig the boobs! So then I can make them float while shes still and move when swimming :D Or keep em realistic when shes above water :p
